The Beginning Of Love

Chapter 4: The Beginning of Love

The realization followed Ethan everywhere.

No matter how hard he tried to ignore it, it remained there.

Quiet.

Persistent.

Impossible to escape.

He was in love with Maya.

Not a crush.

Not a passing attraction.

Not something that would disappear after a few weeks.

Real love.

The kind that sneaks into your life without permission and slowly becomes part of who you are.

The kind that makes one person’s happiness feel as important as your own.

The kind that makes your heart race when they smile and ache when they’re hurting.

For weeks, Ethan tried convincing himself otherwise.

It didn’t work.

Every day only made the feeling stronger.

One Saturday morning, Ethan was awakened by the sound of his phone vibrating.

He groaned and reached for it.

The screen lit up.

Maya.

A smile immediately appeared on his face.

Before he could stop himself.

“That’s pathetic,” he muttered.

Yet he opened the message instantly.

Maya: Good morning.

Maya: Are you awake?

Maya: Actually don’t answer that. You’re probably asleep.

Maya: Which means you’re reading these messages after waking up.

Maya: In that case, good morning again.

Ethan laughed.

He typed back.

Ethan: I’ve been awake the whole time.

A reply came almost immediately.

Maya: Liar.

Ethan: I can prove it.

Maya: Impossible.

Ethan: Because you’re always right?

Maya: Exactly.

Ethan shook his head.

Then another message appeared.

Maya: Coffee?

His heart betrayed him once again.

One word.

That was all it took.

Ethan: Give me twenty minutes.

Maya: Make it fifteen.

Ethan: Impossible.

Maya: Weak.

Ethan: You’re impossible.

Maya: See you soon.

Ethan stared at the screen.

And smiled like an idiot.

The café was unusually busy that morning.

Students filled nearly every table.

The smell of fresh coffee lingered in the air.

Ethan spotted Maya immediately.

She sat near the window wearing a cream-colored sweater, reading a novel while waiting.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

Watching her.

The way she absentmindedly tucked her hair behind her ear.

The way her eyebrows moved whenever she became focused on a page.

The small smile that appeared whenever she reached an interesting part.

She looked up.

Their eyes met.

And she smiled.

There it was again.

That smile.

The one that always made the world seem brighter.

“Are you planning to stand there all day?” she asked.

Ethan laughed and joined her.

“You started without me.”

“You were late.”

“I was three minutes late.”

“Exactly.”

He shook his head.

“You’re impossible.”

“I know.”

The conversation flowed naturally from there.

Like it always did.

Hours passed without either of them noticing.

They talked about books.

Movies.

Childhood memories.

Random things that made absolutely no sense.

And somehow, every conversation felt important.

Every moment felt valuable.

Ethan had spent years surrounded by people.

Friends.

Classmates.

Coworkers.

Yet nobody had ever made him feel as comfortable as Maya did.

With her, he never had to pretend.

Never had to force conversation.

Never had to think too hard about what to say.

Being with her felt easy.

Natural.

Like home.

A few days later, Maya wasn’t on campus.

At first, Ethan didn’t think much of it.

People got busy.

Classes happened.

Life happened.

But by lunchtime, he still hadn’t seen her.

Or received a message.

A strange feeling settled in his chest.

By evening, he finally texted her.

Ethan: Everything okay?

Several minutes passed.

No response.

Another hour.

Still nothing.

For reasons he couldn’t explain, he became worried.

Maya always replied.

Even if she was busy.

Even if it was only a short message.

Finally, his phone buzzed.

Maya: Sorry.

Maya: I’ve been sick all day.

Ethan sat upright.

Ethan: Sick?

Maya: Just a fever.

Maya: I’ll survive.

Ethan: Have you seen a doctor?

Maya: Ethan.

Ethan: That’s not an answer.

Several seconds passed.

Then:

Maya: No.

Ethan sighed.

Of course.

The next morning, he stopped by a pharmacy before class.

By afternoon, he was standing outside Maya’s apartment building carrying medicine, soup, and enough snacks to feed an entire family.

When Maya opened the door, she looked shocked.

“What are you doing here?”

“You said you’re sick.”

“So?”

“So I brought supplies.”

She stared at the bags.

Then at him.

Then back at the bags.

“You bought all this?”

“You need to eat.”

Maya laughed weakly.

“Ethan, this is enough food for a month.”

“You can freeze some.”

For a moment, she didn’t say anything.

Her eyes softened.

“You didn’t have to do this.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you?”

The answer was simple.

Because seeing her sick bothered him.

Because he cared.

Because he loved her.

But he couldn’t say any of that.

Not yet.

Instead, he shrugged.

“Because you’re my friend.”

Something flickered across Maya’s face.

A small smile.

Warm and genuine.

“Thank you.”

And somehow, hearing those two words made every effort worth it.

That evening, Ethan returned home exhausted.

Ryan immediately noticed.

“You look tired.”

“I am.”

“Where were you?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Maya’s place.”

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“Oh?”

“She’s sick.”

Ryan smirked.

“So you became her personal hero?”

“That’s not what happened.”

“It absolutely is.”

Ethan rolled his eyes.

Ryan laughed.

Then his expression became more serious.

“You really like her, don’t you?”

The question lingered in the air.

For once, Ethan didn’t deny it.

He looked down.

And nodded.

“Yeah.”

Ryan’s teasing smile disappeared.

“When are you going to tell her?”

Ethan immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“What if she doesn’t feel the same?”

Ryan frowned.

“You’ll never know if you don’t try.”

Maybe.

But Ethan wasn’t ready.

Because right now, he still had Maya in his life.

And the thought of losing her terrified him.

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks turned into months.

And Ethan’s feelings only deepened.

He learned Maya’s favorite coffee order.

He learned she always cried during emotional movies.

He learned she sang along to songs even when she didn’t know the lyrics.

He learned she hated thunderstorms but loved rainy days.

He learned she smiled whenever she was embarrassed.

And every little detail became precious.

Without realizing it, Maya had become the most important person in his life.

Not because she demanded attention.

Not because she tried.

But because she simply existed.

And somehow, that was enough.

One evening, as the sun disappeared beyond the city skyline, Ethan and Maya sat together on a quiet bench near campus.

The world seemed peaceful.

The air cool.

The sky painted in shades of orange and gold.

Maya leaned back and smiled.

“This is nice.”

“Yeah.”

“It feels like everything slows down here.”

Ethan looked at her.

The golden sunlight illuminated her face.

For a moment, she looked almost unreal.

Beautiful.

Gentle.

Perfect.

And suddenly, the truth hit him harder than ever before.

This wasn’t temporary.

This wasn’t a phase.

This wasn’t something he would simply get over.

He loved her.

Completely.

Hopelessly.

With every part of his heart.

And for the first time, Ethan realized something else.

The scary part wasn’t loving Maya.

The scary part was how much she meant to him.

Because if he ever lost her…

He wasn’t sure his heart would ever be the same again.
