Chapter 5: Her Dreams
The semester was moving faster than either Ethan or Maya expected.
Assignments piled up.
Projects became more demanding.
Exams seemed to appear every other week.
Yet somehow, no matter how busy life became, they always found time for each other.
A quick coffee before class.
Lunch together between lectures.
Late-night study sessions in the library.
The moments weren’t grand or dramatic.
But they meant everything to Ethan.
Because every day spent with Maya felt like a day well spent.
⸻
One chilly Friday afternoon, Ethan arrived at their usual café to find Maya staring out the window.
She looked unusually quiet.
Normally she would already be talking before he even sat down.
Today, she barely noticed him.
Ethan frowned.
“Everything okay?”
Maya blinked and turned toward him.
“Oh.”
A small smile appeared.
“Hey.”
The smile didn’t reach her eyes.
That alone told Ethan something was wrong.
He sat across from her.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Ethan gave her a look.
She rolled her eyes.
“Fine.”
“There it is.”
Maya sighed.
“I’m just tired.”
“That’s not all.”
She stared down at her coffee.
For several moments she didn’t speak.
Then finally she said quietly,
“Sometimes I wonder if all this hard work is worth it.”
Ethan frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Maya looked out the window again.
“The studying.”
“The part-time jobs.”
“The constant pressure.”
“Everything.”
For the first time since meeting her, she looked uncertain.
Vulnerable.
Almost lost.
And Ethan hated seeing it.
Because Maya was usually the strongest person in any room.
Seeing her doubt herself felt wrong somehow.
“You want to know the truth?” she asked.
Ethan nodded.
She took a deep breath.
“My mom works two jobs.”
Ethan remained silent.
Listening.
“My entire life she’s sacrificed everything for me.”
Maya’s voice softened.
“New clothes? Not important.”
“Vacations? Forget it.”
“Anything extra always became money for school.”
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Maya laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
But because she was trying not to get emotional.
“When I was younger, I used to get angry.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“You?”
She smiled sadly.
“Yeah.”
“I used to wonder why other kids had things I didn’t.”
“Why life seemed easier for everyone else.”
The café noise faded into the background as Ethan listened.
Every word felt important.
Every memory she shared felt like a piece of herself she was trusting him with.
“But then I got older,” Maya continued.
“And I realized my mom wasn’t giving me less.”
“She was giving me everything she had.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Ethan could hear the emotion in her voice.
And he could see how much she loved her mother.
“That’s why I work so hard,” Maya said quietly.
“I don’t want her sacrifices to be wasted.”
Ethan stared at her.
His admiration for her somehow grew even stronger.
If that was possible.
“You know,” he said softly, “your mom must be incredibly proud of you.”
Maya looked down.
“You really think so?”
“I know so.”
Her eyes met his.
And for a second, neither looked away.
The world around them disappeared.
Leaving only the two of them.
And a conversation neither would ever forget.
⸻
A few days later, Ethan found himself thinking about Maya’s words.
The more he learned about her, the more he understood.
She wasn’t just hardworking.
She wasn’t just kind.
She carried responsibilities most people her age never had to think about.
Yet she never complained.
Never sought sympathy.
Never used her struggles as an excuse.
Instead, she kept moving forward.
Fighting for her future.
Fighting for her dreams.
And Ethan couldn’t help falling deeper in love with her.
⸻
One evening after class, Maya dragged Ethan onto a nearly empty campus field.
The sun was beginning to set.
The sky glowed orange and gold.
“What are we doing here?” Ethan asked.
Maya dropped onto the grass.
“Thinking.”
“That’s dangerous.”
She threw a leaf at him.
He laughed and sat beside her.
For a while they simply watched the sunset.
The silence wasn’t awkward.
It never was between them.
Eventually Maya spoke.
“Do you know what my biggest dream is?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Traveling?”
“Besides that.”
He thought for a moment.
“No.”
She smiled.
“I want to buy my mom a house.”
Ethan blinked.
“A house?”
She nodded.
“A nice one.”
“Not huge.”
“Not fancy.”
“Just somewhere she can finally relax.”
Her eyes sparkled as she spoke.
“I don’t want her worrying about rent anymore.”
“I don’t want her working herself to exhaustion.”
“I want her to wake up every morning knowing she’s safe.”
For several moments Ethan couldn’t speak.
His heart felt strangely heavy.
Not with sadness.
With admiration.
Because Maya’s dream wasn’t about herself.
It was about someone she loved.
And that told him everything he needed to know about her character.
“That’s a beautiful dream.”
Maya smiled.
“I hope I can do it someday.”
“You will.”
She laughed.
“You sound very confident.”
“I am.”
“What if I fail?”
“You won’t.”
“What if things don’t work out?”
“They will.”
“What if—”
“Maya.”
She smiled.
“What?”
“You are the most determined person I’ve ever met.”
Her expression softened.
“You really believe in me, don’t you?”
Ethan didn’t even hesitate.
“Always.”
The word slipped out before he could stop it.
Always.
Maya stared at him.
Something flickered in her eyes.
Something warm.
Something he couldn’t quite understand.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Maya smiled.
A soft, genuine smile.
The kind that always made Ethan’s heart forget how to behave.
⸻
That night, Ethan couldn’t sleep.
Again.
Which was becoming a problem.
He lay on his bed staring at the ceiling.
Thinking about Maya.
Thinking about her dreams.
Thinking about the future she wanted.
And for the first time, he imagined himself in that future.
Standing beside her.
Supporting her.
Celebrating her victories.
Helping her through difficult days.
The image felt natural.
Too natural.
And that terrified him.
Because every day Maya became more important.
Every day his feelings grew stronger.
And every day the risk grew larger.
The risk of losing her.
The risk of telling her the truth.
The risk of hearing words he never wanted to hear.
“I only see you as a friend.”
Just imagining it hurt.
Yet keeping everything inside hurt too.
Ethan closed his eyes.
His heart caught between hope and fear.
Because loving Maya was the easiest thing he had ever done.
But telling her?
That might be the hardest thing he would ever have to do.
