chapter 4 : A stranger in her home

Sophia Bennett barely slept.

Even after returning to bed, her mind refused to settle.

The stranger was awake.

That thought repeated itself over and over inside her head.

A few hours ago, he had been unconscious, lying on her couch between life and death. Now he was awake, alert, and sitting in the same apartment she could barely afford.

The memory of his eyes lingered in her mind.

Dark.

Sharp.

Observant.

The kind of eyes that noticed everything.

The kind of eyes that made people nervous.

Sophia rolled onto her side and stared at the wall.

Sleep was impossible.

Eventually, she gave up trying.

When the first signs of dawn appeared through her curtains, she got out of bed and quietly walked into the living room.

The stranger was awake.

He sat on the couch with his back straight despite his injuries.

The blanket had been folded neatly beside him.

His attention was fixed on the window overlooking the street below.

For a moment, Sophia simply stood there.

Watching.

Studying.

In daylight, he looked different.

The bruises on his face were more visible.

A faint cut rested above his eyebrow.

The bandages wrapped around his side remained stained with traces of blood.

Yet somehow, he still looked intimidating.

Dangerous.

Like someone who belonged in expensive offices and luxury cars instead of her tiny apartment.

The floor creaked beneath her feet.

Immediately, his attention shifted toward her.

His reaction was instant.

Fast enough to surprise her.

As if he had been trained to respond to every sound.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Sophia cleared her throat.

"Good morning."

The stranger studied her for a moment.

Then nodded slightly.

"Good morning."

His voice was deeper than she remembered.

Calmer.

Controlled.

Everything about him felt controlled.

Sophia walked toward the kitchen area.

"It's not much, but I can make coffee."

A brief silence followed.

Then he replied.

"Thank you."

Sophia nodded.

For some reason, his politeness caught her off guard.

She had expected arrogance.

Or rudeness.

Or demands.

Instead, he seemed strangely composed.

The coffee machine sputtered to life.

While waiting, Sophia stole another glance toward him.

He was watching the apartment.

Not judging it.

Observing it.

His eyes moved over the worn furniture, the stacked textbooks, the unpaid bills partially hidden beneath notebooks on the table.

Nothing escaped his attention.

Sophia suddenly felt self-conscious.

Her apartment wasn't impressive.

It was small.

Crowded.

Old.

Everything inside it had been purchased second-hand.

But it was hers.

At least for now.

"You saved my life."

His voice broke the silence.

Sophia looked up.

The stranger was watching her again.

His expression remained unreadable.

"You don't have to thank me."

"I do."

The simple response surprised her.

Sophia handed him a cup of coffee before taking a seat across from him.

For a few moments, neither spoke.

The city outside slowly awakened.

Car horns echoed below.

Pedestrians filled sidewalks.

Life continued.

Eventually, Sophia gathered enough courage to ask the question that had been bothering her.

"What's your name?"

The stranger paused.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared on his face.

Only briefly.

Then it disappeared.

"Alessandro."

Sophia repeated the name silently.

It suited him.

Strong.

Elegant.

Powerful.

"Nice to meet you, Alessandro."

A strange look crossed his face.

Almost amusement.

As if he wasn't used to introductions like that.

As if people normally knew exactly who he was.

Sophia didn't notice.

She was too busy trying to figure him out.

"What happened to you?"

The question hung between them.

Alessandro looked away slightly.

Toward the window.

Toward the city.

His expression hardened.

"There was an accident."

Sophia frowned.

The answer felt incomplete.

But she wasn't about to push.

Not yet.

Everyone had secrets.

She certainly did.

The conversation ended there.

At least for the moment.

A few hours later, Sophia prepared to leave for class.

Her backpack rested against the door.

Textbooks packed neatly inside.

Alessandro remained seated on the couch.

Recovering.

Watching.

Listening.

Before leaving, Sophia hesitated.

"You should rest."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

The first she had seen.

Small.

Almost invisible.

Yet somehow it transformed him completely.

"I'll try."

The smile vanished as quickly as it appeared.

Sophia stared for a second longer than she intended.

Then quickly looked away.

Something about him felt dangerous.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like getting too close would change everything.

The thought made no sense.

She had known him for less than a day.

Still, she couldn't shake the feeling.

"I'll be back later."

Alessandro nodded.

Sophia opened the door and left.

The moment she disappeared down the hallway, the atmosphere inside the apartment changed.

Alessandro stood slowly.

Pain shot through his side.

He ignored it.

Walking toward the window, he pulled a phone from inside his jacket.

A phone Sophia had never noticed.

One call.

That's all it took.

The line connected instantly.

"Boss."

Marco's voice.

Relief filled the single word.

Alessandro remained silent for a moment.

Looking down at the crowded streets below.

"I'm alive."

The response on the other end was immediate.

"We've been searching for three days."

"I know."

"Where are you?"

Alessandro glanced around the apartment.

At the textbooks.

The small kitchen.

The worn furniture.

The life Sophia had built through determination alone.

His gaze softened slightly.

"A safe place."

Marco paused.

"Should we come get you?"

Alessandro thought about it.

The logical answer was yes.

He should leave.

Return to his world.

Return to control.

Return to the empire waiting for him.

Instead, he said something unexpected.

"No."

Silence followed.

Even Marco sounded confused.

"Boss?"

"I'll leave when I'm ready."

The call ended shortly afterward.

Alessandro slipped the phone away.

Then returned to the couch.

For the first time in years, he found himself thinking about something other than business.

Other than power.

Other than survival.

He thought about Sophia Bennett.

The university student who worked herself to exhaustion.

The girl who could barely pay rent.

The girl who had risked everything to help a stranger.

Most people would have walked away.

She hadn't.

That fact bothered him.

Interested him.

Intrigued him.

Hours later, Sophia sat through lectures she barely heard.

Her thoughts kept returning to her apartment.

To Alessandro.

To the mystery surrounding him.

Every answer she found only created more questions.

Who was he?

Why did he seem so different from everyone else?

Why did it feel like he was hiding an entire world behind those calm eyes?

By the time classes ended, her curiosity had become impossible to ignore.

As she walked home beneath the fading afternoon sky, she couldn't shake the feeling that her life was changing.

Not dramatically.

Not suddenly.

Quietly.

Like a door opening somewhere in the distance.

Like the first step of a journey she hadn't chosen.

The city lights flickered on as evening approached.

Traffic filled the streets.

People rushed toward destinations that mattered only to them.

And somewhere among them stood Alessandro Moretti.

A man whose name carried power across New York.

A man Sophia knew almost nothing about.

A man whose arrival would soon transform her ordinary life into something far more dangerous.

Far more complicated.

And far more unforgettable
