Chapter 5: Questions Without Answers
Sophia expected Alessandro to be gone when she returned home.
The thought had followed her throughout the entire day.
A man like him didn't belong in a tiny apartment with peeling paint and second-hand furniture. He belonged somewhere else. Somewhere expensive. Somewhere powerful.
Yet as she climbed the stairs to her floor and reached her apartment door, she felt strangely nervous.
A part of her hoped he was gone.
Another part hoped he wasn't.
She didn't understand why.
Taking a deep breath, she unlocked the door and stepped inside.
The apartment was quiet.
For a moment, disappointment flickered through her chest.
Then she noticed movement near the window.
Alessandro was still there.
He stood with one hand resting in his pocket, staring down at the city below.
The fading sunlight cast long shadows across the room, making him look almost unreal.
Sophia released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"You didn't leave."
Alessandro turned toward her.
His expression remained calm.
"I wasn't sure if I should."
The answer surprised her.
Most people would have left immediately after recovering.
Most people wouldn't wait for permission.
Sophia set her backpack on the table.
"Well, you're still injured."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"That's your professional medical opinion?"
Sophia rolled her eyes.
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
The smile disappeared.
For a moment, neither spoke.
The apartment felt smaller than usual.
The silence felt heavier.
Sophia busied herself unpacking her books.
Anything to avoid acknowledging the strange tension hanging between them.
"Did you eat?"
Alessandro watched her.
"No."
Sophia sighed.
"Of course not."
Walking toward the kitchen, she opened the refrigerator.
The contents were depressing.
A few eggs.
Bread.
Milk.
Half a package of pasta.
Nothing impressive.
Nothing luxurious.
Just survival.
Still, she managed to prepare a simple meal.
When she placed the plate in front of Alessandro, he looked at it for several seconds.
Then at her.
"What?"
"Nobody has done this for me in a long time."
The honesty in his voice caught her off guard.
Sophia didn't know what to say.
Something told her men didn't normally speak to Alessandro Moretti that way.
Something told her they didn't take care of him either.
They feared him.
Respected him.
Obeyed him.
But cared for him?
That felt different.
The thought lingered in her mind while they ate.
Eventually, curiosity won.
Again.
"Who are you?"
The question escaped before she could stop it.
Alessandro looked up.
His gaze met hers.
Steady.
Unreadable.
Sophia leaned forward slightly.
"I mean it."
A brief silence followed.
"What do you want to know?"
"Everything."
For the first time, genuine amusement appeared in his eyes.
"That's a dangerous question."
"Why?"
"Because answers have consequences."
Sophia frowned.
"That's not really an answer."
"No."
"It isn't."
She crossed her arms.
"You keep doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Avoiding questions."
Alessandro looked down at his coffee cup.
For a moment, he seemed to consider something.
Then he spoke.
"My name is Alessandro Moretti."
"I know that."
"I own businesses."
Sophia raised an eyebrow.
"That's very specific."
Another faint smile appeared.
"You're difficult."
"I've been called worse."
Something about that answer made Alessandro laugh softly.
The sound surprised both of them.
It transformed his face completely.
For a brief moment, he looked younger.
Less dangerous.
More human.
The moment passed quickly.
Still, Sophia noticed it.
And once she noticed it, she couldn't forget it.
Outside, darkness settled over New York.
Rain began falling again.
The steady rhythm echoed against the windows.
Sophia gathered her books and sat down to study.
Midterm exams were approaching.
Her grades mattered.
More than anything.
She needed a future.
Needed a degree.
Needed a life beyond survival.
Hours passed.
The apartment remained quiet.
Sophia became absorbed in her work.
Equations.
Notes.
Research.
Anything to keep her mind focused.
Eventually she noticed Alessandro watching her.
Not constantly.
Not in a creepy way.
Just occasionally.
As if he were trying to understand something.
Finally, she looked up.
"What?"
Alessandro didn't immediately answer.
"You work hard."
Sophia laughed.
A tired laugh.
"What choice do I have?"
His gaze remained fixed on her.
The question seemed to interest him.
Sophia closed her textbook.
"You know what people see when they look at me?"
Alessandro said nothing.
She continued anyway.
"They see a girl working in a diner."
Her fingers traced the edge of the book.
"They don't see the loans."
The bills.
The panic attacks before exams.
The nights without sleep."
Her voice softened.
"They don't see how scared I am of failing."
The confession hung in the air.
Sophia rarely spoke about those things.
Usually she kept them buried.
Hidden.
Private.
Yet somehow talking to Alessandro felt easier than expected.
Maybe because he was practically a stranger.
Maybe because strangers couldn't disappoint you.
Alessandro remained silent for several moments.
Then he spoke quietly.
"You won't fail."
Sophia laughed again.
This time it sounded sad.
"You don't know that."
"I do."
The certainty in his voice startled her.
There was no hesitation.
No doubt.
Just absolute confidence.
Sophia stared at him.
"How can you be so sure?"
Alessandro looked directly into her eyes.
"Because people like you don't quit."
The room fell silent.
For some reason, those words affected her more than they should have.
Nobody had ever said something like that before.
Most people noticed her struggles.
Very few noticed her strength.
Sophia looked away first.
Her heart felt strangely heavy.
And strangely warm.
The rain continued falling outside.
The city lights shimmered through the window.
Hours later, Sophia finally stood.
Exhaustion pulled at every muscle in her body.
"I should sleep."
Alessandro nodded.
"You should."
She moved toward her bedroom.
Then paused.
"Good night."
His gaze followed her.
"Good night, Sophia."
The sound of her name on his lips felt different.
She couldn't explain why.
And that bothered her.
Inside her room, she lay awake long after turning off the lights.
Thoughts drifted endlessly through her mind.
The tuition payment.
The accident.
The mysterious stranger.
The secrets he refused to explain.
None of it made sense.
Yet somehow she felt certain of one thing.
Meeting Alessandro Moretti had changed something.
Not just in her life.
In her.
The realization should have frightened her.
Instead, it kept her awake until nearly dawn.
Meanwhile, in the darkness of the living room, Alessandro sat alone.
His phone vibrated once.
A message from Marco.
The city knows you're alive. Your enemies are moving.
Alessandro read the message.
Then looked toward Sophia's closed bedroom door.
His expression hardened immediately.
The softness disappeared.
The dangerous man returned.
Because for the first time in years, he had something to lose.
And in his world, that made Sophia Bennett the most vulnerable person in New York.
