The Secret Between Us
Chapter 2: The Boy Who Left
For several seconds after the slap—
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The hallway was silent except for the distant sound of thunder outside.
Mahi's chest rose and fell rapidly.
Her hand still stung.
Not because she regretted it.
Because she didn't.
Five years.
Five years of waiting.
Five years of unanswered questions.
Five years of wondering what she had done wrong.
And now he stood in front of her acting as though nothing had happened.
As though he hadn't shattered her heart.
As though he hadn't disappeared without a single explanation.
Madhav slowly looked away.
His jaw tightened.
The red mark from her slap was still visible on his cheek.
Yet he didn't seem angry.
If anything...
He looked like he thought he deserved it.
Maybe he did.
Mahi folded her arms.
"Get out."
Her voice shook.
Not with fear.
With emotion.
Too much emotion.
Madhav looked at her.
Really looked at her.
As though he was trying to memorize her face.
The same way he used to in college.
The thought irritated her immediately.
"You heard me."
Silence.
"Madhav."
His name felt strange on her tongue.
Familiar.
Painful.
Dangerous.
Finally he spoke.
"I need to talk to you."
Mahi laughed.
A bitter laugh.
The kind that hurt.
"Now?"
He didn't answer.
"Now you want to talk?"
Still nothing.
Her anger grew.
Because his silence reminded her of the past.
Reminded her of every unanswered question.
Every sleepless night.
Every birthday.
Every disappointment.
"Five years."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
His expression changed immediately.
Pain flashed across his face.
Real pain.
But Mahi didn't care.
Not right now.
"You disappeared for five years."
She took a step forward.
"You didn't call."
Another step.
"You didn't text."
Another.
"You didn't even leave a goodbye."
Madhav didn't move.
Didn't defend himself.
Didn't argue.
He simply stood there and listened.
Which somehow made it worse.
"Do you know how many times I tried to contact you?"
Her voice cracked.
The memory still hurt.
"I called you."
Silence.
"I messaged you."
Nothing.
"I even went looking for you."
The confession slipped out.
Madhav froze.
For the first time since arriving—
His composure cracked.
Just slightly.
"You what?"
Mahi instantly regretted saying it.
Not because it wasn't true.
Because it was.
Painfully true.
After he disappeared, she had searched.
For weeks.
Then months.
Looking for answers.
Looking for him.
Looking for something.
Anything.
And she found nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
As though he had vanished from the world.
Eventually she stopped searching.
Not because she wanted to.
Because she couldn't keep breaking her own heart.
Madhav swallowed hard.
The guilt in his eyes deepened.
"Mahi..."
"Don't."
Her voice was sharp.
"Don't say my name like that."
The hallway fell silent again.
Neither noticed the rain beginning outside.
Neither noticed the storm growing stronger.
Both were trapped inside a conversation that should have happened years ago.
---
Five Years Earlier
The college campus buzzed with life.
Students rushed between classes.
Groups laughed beneath trees.
Music drifted from someone's speaker.
Everything felt bright.
Simple.
Easy.
At least for everyone except Madhav.
Because he was currently hiding behind a wall.
Watching Mahi.
Again.
His friends stood beside him.
Completely unimpressed.
"You're hopeless."
Madhav ignored them.
"Seriously."
Still nothing.
His friend Arjun sighed dramatically.
"You've been staring at her for ten minutes."
Madhav finally looked away.
"I wasn't staring."
"You absolutely were."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
Madhav rolled his eyes.
Unfortunately...
Everyone knew the truth.
Including him.
Because every day it became harder to hide his feelings.
Every day he found another reason to be near her.
Another excuse to talk to her.
Another reason to smile.
Then suddenly—
Mahi looked directly at him.
Caught.
Red-handed.
His friends immediately burst out laughing.
Madhav wanted the ground to swallow him whole.
Mahi simply raised an eyebrow.
Then smiled.
And just like that—
Every intelligent thought vanished from his brain.
---
Present Day
Mahi finally stepped aside.
"Five minutes."
Madhav blinked.
"What?"
"You said you wanted to talk."
Her expression remained cold.
"You have five minutes."
For a moment he seemed surprised.
Then relieved.
Very relieved.
He entered the apartment slowly.
As though he wasn't sure he belonged there.
Maybe he didn't.
The door closed behind them.
Immediately the atmosphere changed.
The apartment felt smaller.
More intimate.
More dangerous.
Not because of physical danger.
Because of emotions.
Unfinished emotions.
The birthday cake still sat on the table.
The candle had almost burned out.
Madhav noticed it instantly.
His gaze lingered.
Then quietly—
"Happy birthday."
The words hit harder than she expected.
Because he remembered.
After five years...
He remembered.
Mahi hated how much that affected her.
"Why are you here?"
Straight to the point.
No games.
No pretending.
Madhav's expression darkened.
The warmth vanished instantly.
And for the first time—
She noticed something strange.
He looked tired.
Exhausted.
As though he hadn't slept properly in weeks.
Maybe months.
"I came back because I had to."
The answer made no sense.
Mahi frowned.
"What does that mean?"
His eyes met hers.
And suddenly she felt something she hadn't felt all evening.
Fear.
Not for herself.
For him.
Because the look in his eyes wasn't normal.
It was the look of someone carrying a burden.
A secret.
Something dangerous.
Before he could answer—
A loud sound echoed from outside.
Both turned toward the window.
Headlights.
A black car parked across the street.
Madhav immediately stood.
Every muscle in his body tensed.
The change was instant.
Like a switch had been flipped.
One second he looked like the boy she once knew.
The next—
A complete stranger.
Dangerous.
Alert.
Watching.
Waiting.
"Madhav?"
No response.
His eyes remained fixed on the vehicle.
The car stayed parked.
Engine running.
Lights off.
The sight made him visibly uneasy.
And that terrified Mahi.
Because if someone like Madhav was nervous...
Then something was very wrong.
Very, very wrong.
Finally he looked back at her.
And the next words out of his mouth changed everything.
"Mahi."
His voice was deadly serious.
"If I tell you the truth..."
He paused.
As though choosing his next words carefully.
"...your life is never going to be the same again."
Outside, thunder shook the sky.
Across the street, the black car remained motionless.
Watching.
Waiting.
And for the first time—
Mahi realized that Madhav hadn't just returned.
He had brought something with him.
Something dark.
Something dangerous.
Something that had followed him all the way back to her.
