Chapter 5: The Forgotten Photograph

The photograph lay on the table.

Silent.

Harmless.

And yet somehow...

It felt more dangerous than anything Mahi had seen all night.

Her hands trembled.

Her eyes remained fixed on the image.

Two families.

Smiling.

Standing together.

And right there—

A younger version of herself.

Holding hands with a younger version of Madhav.

The room felt strangely cold.

As though all the warmth had suddenly disappeared.

"This isn't possible."

Nobody answered.

Mahi looked up.

First at Mr. Khanna.

Then at Madhav.

Neither seemed surprised.

Which made everything worse.

Much worse.

"You knew."

Her voice cracked.

The accusation wasn't loud.

But it hit hard.

Madhav lowered his gaze.

That was all the answer she needed.

Anger immediately exploded inside her.

"You knew?"

Silence.

"Madhav."

Still nothing.

"MADHAV."

His eyes finally met hers.

And the guilt she found there made her heart sink.

Because guilty people knew things.

And Madhav looked very guilty.

"I remembered."

The words were barely above a whisper.

"What?"

"I remembered."

The room spun.

For a second Mahi thought she had misheard him.

"You remembered?"

He nodded slowly.

The sight made her chest tighten.

"Since when?"

Another silence.

A terrible silence.

The kind that warned her she wasn't going to like the answer.

"Since college."

Everything stopped.

Mahi stared.

Her mind refused to process the words.

Since college?

Since the beginning?

Since the day they met?

The realization hit like a punch.

"You knew the entire time?"

"Mahi—"

"You knew?"

His silence answered for him.

And suddenly all the confusion became anger.

Years of anger.

Years of heartbreak.

Years of questions.

"You remembered me."

Her breathing became uneven.

"And you never told me."

"Mahi, listen—"

"No."

Tears burned behind her eyes.

"No."

Because now she wasn't just hurt.

She felt betrayed.

---

Five Years Earlier

The college library was unusually quiet.

Most students had already left.

Only a few remained.

Including Mahi.

And unfortunately...

Including Madhav.

Unfortunately for her.

Not for him.

He seemed perfectly happy sitting across from her.

Pretending to study.

Actually watching her.

Again.

Mahi slammed her notebook shut.

"What?"

Madhav blinked innocently.

"What what?"

"Stop staring."

"I wasn't staring."

"You absolutely were."

His lips twitched.

Trying not to smile.

Failing miserably.

Mahi narrowed her eyes.

"Why are you smiling?"

"No reason."

"Liar."

The smile widened.

And somehow...

Despite being annoyed...

Mahi felt herself smiling too.

She hated that.

Very much.

Because somehow Madhav always knew exactly how to make her smile.

Even when she didn't want to.

Especially when she didn't want to.

Then suddenly—

A small piece of paper landed on her notebook.

Mahi frowned.

She unfolded it.

One sentence.

Written in messy handwriting.

You're cute when you're angry.

Mahi immediately looked up.

Madhav looked very interested in his textbook.

Suspiciously interested.

The idiot.

---

Present Day

Mr. Khanna quietly stepped toward the table.

"There wasn't time."

Mahi turned sharply.

"What does that mean?"

The older man sighed.

As though he had carried this secret for years.

Perhaps he had.

"The day this photograph was taken..."

He paused.

Something dark entered his eyes.

"Something happened."

The room fell silent.

Even Madhav looked uncomfortable.

Very uncomfortable.

"What happened?"

Mr. Khanna hesitated.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then—

"There was an attack."

The words felt heavy.

Wrong.

Dangerous.

Mahi froze.

"An attack?"

The older man nodded.

"On both families."

A chill ran down her spine.

No one laughed.

No one corrected him.

No one called it a misunderstanding.

Which meant it was true.

Every terrifying word.

Mahi slowly sat down.

The room suddenly felt impossible to stand in.

An attack?

On both families?

Why?

Who would do that?

And more importantly—

Why had nobody told her?

---

Five Years Earlier

Rain poured from the sky.

Classes had ended hours ago.

The campus was nearly empty.

Most students had already gone home.

Except two stubborn idiots.

Mahi and Madhav.

Unfortunately.

Their bus had been delayed.

Which meant they were trapped together.

Under one small shelter.

Watching rain fall.

And trying very hard not to notice each other.

Trying.

Failing.

Mostly failing.

Mahi crossed her arms.

"This is your fault."

Madhav nearly choked.

"My fault?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"I don't know yet."

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

The sound echoed softly through the rain.

For some reason—

Mahi loved that laugh.

Though she would never admit it.

Ever.

Then suddenly—

Lightning flashed.

Thunder exploded.

Instinctively—

Mahi moved closer.

Just slightly.

A tiny movement.

Barely noticeable.

But Madhav noticed.

Of course he did.

And for some reason...

That made him smile.

A genuine smile.

The kind reserved only for her.

---

Present Day

Mr. Khanna picked up the photograph.

His finger pointed toward a corner.

A detail Mahi hadn't noticed before.

A symbol.

Small.

Hidden.

Almost invisible.

A strange design.

A circle.

Surrounded by sharp lines.

Like a broken compass.

The moment Madhav saw it—

His expression changed.

Instantly.

"Madhav?"

His jaw tightened.

The symbol clearly meant something.

Something important.

Something dangerous.

Mahi looked between them.

"What is it?"

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Then finally—

Mr. Khanna spoke.

"The symbol belongs to the people who destroyed your families."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The photograph suddenly felt heavier.

More important.

Terrifying.

Because for the first time—

The mystery had a face.

Or at least a mark.

A clue.

A beginning.

And somewhere deep inside—

Mahi realized her life was never going back to normal.

Because the truth she had spent years searching for...

Was finally beginning to surface.

And it was far darker than she imagined.
