By day, Club Eclipse looked harmless — almost inviting. A café with polished wooden tables, soft jazz humming from speakers, and sunlight spilling through tall windows. Students tapped on laptops, couples shared coffee, and the aroma of roasted beans filled the air.
It was the kind of place where no one would suspect secrets lurked.
But at night, the transformation was complete.
The café dissolved into a den of shadows.
Neon signs flickered, bass throbbed through the walls, and smoke curled in the air like whispers.
The same tables became stages for deals, the same corners became hiding places for men with too much to lose. It was a place where innocence was a mask, and danger wore perfume.
Sam had been watching for days, blending in with the crowd. Tonight, he slipped into the restroom, his instincts sharp.
He wasn’t alone.
A man was already there, fumbling with the faucet.
He was tall, about Sam’s height, with sharp features that might have been intimidating if not for the way he accidentally splashed water onto his shirt.
“Damn it,” the stranger muttered, shaking his hands awkwardly.
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Rough night?”
The man looked up, startled. “Oh, uh… yeah. These taps have a vendetta against me.” He grinned sheepishly, then slipped on the wet floor, catching himself just in time.
Sam’s suspicion flickered. Clumsy, yes — but his eyes were sharp, scanning the room with the same intensity Sam used.
“I haven’t seen you around,” Sam said casually.
“Guess we’re both new,” the man replied, drying his hands. “Name’s Kritt Hayes.”
Sam’s jaw tightened. He didn’t offer his real name. “Zen,” he said smoothly, using his undercover alias.
Kritt studied him for a moment, his grin fading. “You don’t look like you’re here for the music.”
“And you do?” Sam shot back.
Kritt chuckled. “Touché.”
The silence stretched, heavy with unspoken suspicion. Both men were hunters, circling without knowing they were chasing the same prey.
Sam’s thoughts raced. Who is this guy? Too observant to be a drunk, too clumsy to be a gangster. Could he be another cop? Or worse — a spy for Spade?
Kritt’s mind mirrored the doubt.
This guy’s too calm. Too sharp. He’s hiding something. But what?
Before either could push further, the restroom door swung open.
A young man bounced in, humming off‑key. He was impossibly cute, with messy hair and a smile that could melt stone. His clothes were stylish but mismatched, and his carefree aura clashed with the tension in the room.
“Hey, Kritt!” he chirped. “You left your notebook at the bar again.”
Kritt groaned. “Thanks, Aprico. You’re a lifesaver.”
Aprico beamed. “I’m always saving you, aren’t I?” He winked, then tripped over the trash bin, laughing at himself as if it were part of the act.
Sam watched, unimpressed but intrigued. Too dumb..
Kritt sighed, rubbing his forehead. “Ignore him. He’s… my sideling.”
Aprico grinned at Sam. “Nice to meet you! You look serious. Are you a poet? You’ve got that brooding vibe.”
Sam’s lips twitched. “Something like that.”
The three stood in uneasy silence, the bass from the club vibrating through the walls.
Sam’s instincts screamed that Kritt wasn’t just another patron.
Kritt’s gut told him Sam wasn’t just another drifter. And Aprico, blissfully unaware, hummed a pop tune while trying to fix his shoelaces.
Sam finally spoke. “Enjoy your night.” He brushed past them, his mind racing.
Kritt watched him go, muttering under his breath. “That guy’s trouble.”
Aprico tilted his head. “He’s handsome though.”
Kritt groaned. “That’s not the point!”
Back in the club, Sam leaned against the bar, scanning the crowd. The shady exchanges were subtle tonight — coded glances, whispered deals, envelopes slipping into pockets. He noted every detail, every shadow.
But his mind kept circling back to the restroom. To Kritt. To the way his clumsiness masked sharp instincts.
Sam scribbled in his journal later:
Club Eclipse. Lead confirmed. Strange encounter — man named Kritt. Possible rival. Suspicious.
Meanwhile, Kritt sat with Aprico at a corner table. Aprico was busy doodling hearts in his notebook, oblivious to the tension.
Kritt muttered, “That guy… Zen. He’s not who he says he is.”
Aprico shrugged. “Maybe he’s just shy.”
Kritt shook his head. “No. He’s hiding something. And I’m going to find out what.”
The night ended with both men leaving the club separately, each convinced the other was part of the puzzle. Neither realized yet that their paths were destined to collide — not as enemies, but as reluctant allies.
And somewhere in the shadows.......remained unnoticed .....what?is?it?
