The city’s nights pressed down heavier than ever. Weeks of undercover work at Club Eclipse had sharpened Sam’s instincts, and finally, a whisper reached him: Spade wasn’t just a ghost — he was the leader of a powerful gang. The clue came from coded chatter, fragments of names, and one reckless dealer who spoke too freely before vanishing.
Sam knew this was his chance. To get closer, he had to prove himself.
In a rain‑slick alley, one of Spade’s lieutenants, Andrew, was cornered by rival thugs.
“Back off,” Sam growled, stepping forward, his disguise as Zen Ryder flawless.
The thugs sneered. “Who the hell are you?”
Sam’s fists answered. The fight was brutal — punches echoing against brick, rain splattering like applause. When the dust settled, Andrew was alive, bruised but grateful.
“You saved me,” Andrew muttered, clutching his ribs. “Spade will hear of this.”
Sam nodded, hiding his satisfaction. Exactly what I wanted.
*Weeks Later*
Sam’s infiltration deepened. He moved among the gang, listening, learning, but the weight of secrecy pressed harder each day. He couldn’t do this alone.
One evening, he sat across from his uncle, Croc Henderson, in a diner.
“I need backup,” Sam said quietly. “Someone I can trust. A comrade.”
Croc leaned back, studying him. “You’re asking me to risk another life in this mess.”
“I’m asking you to give me someone who can survive it,” Sam replied.
Croc sighed. “There’s one man. Brilliant, though… unconventional.”
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Unconventional?”
“You’ll see.”
A week later, Sam returned to Club Eclipse. By day, it was a harmless café — sunlight, jazz, laptops, couples sipping coffee. By night, it was a den of shadows, neon bleeding into smoke.
Sam slipped into the restroom, adjusting his disguise. The door creaked open.
“Zen Ryder?” a voice asked, half‑amused.
Sam turned. Kritt Hayes stood there — tall, sharp‑featured, fumbling with his jacket zipper like it was a Rubik’s cube.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Sam muttered.
Kritt grinned. “Surprise. Your uncle thought you could use someone who trips over his own shoelaces.” He winked, then promptly dropped his notebook into the sink. “Oops.”
Sam’s suspicion flared. “You’re the comrade?”
“Don’t sound so disappointed,” Kritt said, drying his notebook with a paper towel. “I’m excellent at my job. Just… not at faucets.”
Sam studied him, torn between irritation and amusement. “This is a secret mission. No one else can know.”
“Relax,” Kritt replied, suddenly serious. “I didn’t even tell Aprico. He’d blurt it out before finishing his coffee.”
Sam smirked. “Smart move.”
Together, they staged their entry. Sam vouched for Kritt, presenting him as a trusted ally.
“Who’s the new guy?” one gang member sneered.
Kritt grinned nervously. “Just here to… blend in.” He tripped over a chair, then recovered with a laugh. “See? I’m already fitting in.”
The gang chuckled, dismissing him as harmless. Sam hid a smile. Clumsy, but effective. They’ll never suspect his sharp mind.
Later that night, Sam and Kritt sat in a corner, whispering over drinks.
“You realize,” Sam said, “if Spade finds out who we are, we’re dead.”
Kritt leaned back, smirking. “Suspense makes life interesting.”
Sam shook his head. “You’re insane.”
“Maybe,” Kritt replied, “but I’m your insane comrade now.”
Sam narrowed his eyes. “You’re going to blow our cover one day.”
Kritt grinned. “Nah. I only trip over furniture, not secrets.”
Sam sighed. “That chair stunt almost gave me a heart attack.”
“Hey,” Kritt said, raising his glass, “if clumsiness keeps them laughing instead of suspecting, I call that strategy.”
Sam chuckled despite himself. “You’re ridiculous.”
“And you’re stuck with me,” Kritt replied, clinking his glass against Sam’s.
And so, the partnership began — forged in secrecy, cloaked in suspicion, and laced with humor. Sam had found his ally, though neither fully trusted the other yet. Together, they stepped deeper into Spade’s empire, unaware of how close the shadows were closing in.......
