The aftermath of the breach left the penthouse draped in a heavy, tense quiet. The emergency crimson lights had been switched off, replaced by the cool, low ambient glow of the floor-level LEDs. Outside, the London rain continued to lash against the glass, the city below completely unaware of the digital execution that had just taken place sixty stories above.
Julian sat on the edge of the sprawling leather sofa in the living room. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves pushed up to his elbows. Between his fingers, he held a glass of amber whiskey, the ice melting untouched. His eyes—usually calculating and distant—were fixed entirely on Ethan.
Ethan was kneeling on the floor between Julian’s parted knees, a small first-aid kit open beside him. With meticulous, practiced care, Ethan dipped a cotton pad into antiseptic and pressed it gently against a shallow cut on Julian’s jawline—a souvenir from a shattered glass partition during the firefight.
Julian flinched slightly, his jaw tightening under Ethan’s touch.
"Don't move," Ethan murmured, his voice soft but carrying that absolute, calm focus he usually reserved for deep-system decryption. "You're the one who decided to play action hero instead of letting me handle it from the terminal."
"They were in the hallway, Ethan," Julian said, his voice a low, rough vibration that rattled against Ethan’s fingertips. He didn't look at the antiseptic or the kit. He just watched the way the dim light caught the edge of Ethan’s collarbone. "If a single one of them had stepped foot into that bedroom—if their eyes had even looked at you—I would have torn this building down with my bare hands."
Ethan paused, the cotton pad hovering a millimeter from Julian’s skin. He looked up, meeting Julian’s intense, storm-gray gaze. A slow, dark thrill coiled in the pit of Ethan’s stomach. It was terrifying, the sheer scale of Julian’s obsession. Any normal person would be packing their bags, running from a man who looked at them with such lethal, suffocating possessiveness.
But Ethan just leaned closer, his chest pressing against Julian’s knee.
"I told you, Julian. I’m not going anywhere," Ethan whispered, his thumb sliding down to trace the line of Julian’s lower lip, wiping away a stray drop of amber liquor. "The syndicate is gone. Their lead hacker’s rig is a pile of molten plastic on the pavement. No one knows I'm here except you."
,
"Good," Julian growled.
He dropped his whiskey glass onto the thick carpet, ignoring the spill, and grabbed Ethan by the back of his neck. With a sudden, possessive jerk, he pulled Ethan upward, forcing him onto his lap. Julian’s arms wrapped around Ethan’s waist like iron bands, locking him flush against his chest.
Ethan let out a sharp gasp, his hands automatically gripping Julian’s broad shoulders for balance. The smell of cedarwood, expensive alcohol, and the faint, metallic tang of leftover adrenaline enveloped him entirely.
