Julian Cross did not believe in miracles. He believed in algorithms, probabilities, and human error.
"Run it again," Julian commanded, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of his private, subterranean server room.
On the massive, wrap-around monitors lining the dark concrete wall, lines of glowing green code cascaded downward. Standing next to him, his chief security officer, Marcus, tapped rapidly on a tablet.
"I've run her digital footprint through our top three scrapers, boss," Marcus said, looking fatigued. "Dr. Elena Vance is entirely clean. Her medical license is flawless—graduated top of her class at Johns Hopkins, three years at Metro General, zero malpractice claims, zero anomalies. She checks out perfectly."
"That’s exactly why she doesn't check out," Julian muttered, crossing his arms over his chest. He had shed his suit jacket, rolling the sleeves of his white dress shirt up his forearms.
He couldn't shake the memory of her hands from two hours ago. When his mother’s heart had flatlined, Julian had felt a rare, suffocating spike of panic. But Dr. Vance? Her heart rate hadn't even visibly accelerated. Her breathing had remained a perfectly timed, rhythmic cadence. He had watched her inject an unlabeled drug into his mother’s vein with the kind of cold, muscle-memory precision found only in combat-trained operatives.
Most concierge doctors cried out for assistance or fumbled with their equipment. Elena Vance had taken control of the room like a general commanding a tactical strike.
"Look at the entry logs from the front gate," Julian ordered, stepping closer to the screen. "Zoom in on her car."
The monitors shifted to high-definition security footage of Elena’s matte-black sedan passing through the biometric scanners.
"Cross-reference the vehicle's registration with DMV records," Julian said.
"Matches her clinic address," Marcus replied immediately. "Everything aligns, Julian. She saved your mother's life. Why are we treating her like a hostile?"
Julian’s amber eyes narrowed as he stared at the frozen frame of Elena’s face through the windshield. She was beautiful—strikingly so—with sharp, intelligent eyes and a jawline that suggested unyielding discipline. But there was a hidden depth behind those eyes. A calculation that mirrored his own.
"Because an hour before she arrived, our network perimeter detected a localized signal dampener floating near the eastern wall," Julian said softly. "The moment she entered the house, the dampener went dark. Someone was planning a blind spot in my security grid today. And then, my mother miraculously suffers an acute cardiac arrest right in front of a world-class thoracic surgeon who just happens to carry custom anti-arrhythmic blocks in her personal bag?"
Marcus paused, the gravity of the situation finally sinking in. "You think the cardiac arrest was a distraction? Or a setup?"
"I think Dr. Vance is a variable I didn't account for," Julian said, a slow, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. It wasn't a smile of anger—it was the thrill of a coder encountering a genuinely brilliant piece of malware. "She told me she doesn't like losing. Let's see how she handles a game where the rules keep changing."
He tapped a command onto the console, pulling up Elena’s official schedule at the hospital.
"She's scheduled for a follow-up appointment with my mother tomorrow afternoon at three," Julian noted.
"Should I cancel it? Put the estate on lockdown?" Marcus asked, his hand hovering over his communication earpiece.
"No," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, amused baritone. "Double the invisible security detail inside the sunroom. Upgrade the biometric tracking on her medical bag the moment she steps through the door. And make sure my schedule is completely clear at three o'clock tomorrow."
He leaned back against the console, staring at her picture. For years, Julian had felt entirely isolated by his own intellect, surrounded by people he could read like open books. But Elena Vance was a locked vault.
"Let's see what else you're hiding, Doctor," Julian whispered to the empty room.
