The red digital numbers on the solarium wall flipped to 15:50. Ten minutes remained on the contract.
"Drop the syringe, Doctor," the lead guard barked, the barrel of his submachine gun completely steady. "Hands on your head. Now."
Elena’s mind raced through her remaining tactical options, her muscles coiled to spring. Julian’s grip on her wrist remained iron-tight, his amber eyes drilling into hers. He wasn't listening to his guards. He was trying to read her.
"Sir, step back!" the guard repeated, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Stand down," Julian ordered, his voice remarkably calm despite the chaos. He didn't look away from Elena. "Lower your weapons and secure the perimeter of this floor. We have a security breach, but it’s not just in this room."
Before the guards could even process the command, the reinforced glass windows of the solarium violently shattered.
A barrage of heavy, suppressed gunfire tore through the room, shredding the medical monitors into plastic confetti. The rhythmic beeping turned into a flatline shriek. The lead guard took two rounds to the chest, collapsing instantly. The other two guards dove for cover behind the heavy limestone pillars, firing blindly out into the fog.
"Down!" Julian roared.
He didn't push Elena away; he pulled her. He slammed his body over hers, dragging them both behind the heavy steel frame of his mother's medical bed just as a shower of glass rain fell over them.
Elena’s instinct took over. The daylight surgeon was gone. She ripped her wrist out of Julian’s loosened grip, reached into the false lining of her fallen medical bag, and bypassed the pink syringe. Her fingers wrapped around a sleek, matte-black Glock 19 she had kept hidden in the bottom panel.
She popped the safety off and peered around the edge of the bed.
Through the gaping hole in the shattered glass wall, three figures in sleek, charcoal-grey tactical gear swung into the room on rappelling ropes. They wore faceless, matte-black ballistic masks.
"Kaelen's cleaners," Elena hissed, her voice cutting through the ringing in Julian's ears. "They aren't here to negotiate. They’re wiping the board."
"They're attacking a fortified estate in broad daylight?" Julian spat, pulling a sleek, customized Sig Sauer from his jacket pocket. He fired two precise shots over the mattress, catching one of the advancing cleaners in the throat. The man crumpled. "That’s a suicide mission."
"Not when they have the master override code," Elena countered.
Right on cue, the estate's emergency klaxons began to wail, but the automated steel blast shutters didn't drop. Instead, the electronic locks on the solarium doors clicked open. The entire grid was failing. Kaelen had completely compromised the Cross network from the outside.
"Evelyn," Julian muttered, his composure cracking as he looked up at his mother. The old woman was terrified, hyperventilating as the stray bullets punched holes into the ceiling above her.
A second wave of cleaners entered through the main doors, pinning the remaining estate guards in a deadly crossfire. The solarium had become a kill box.
Elena looked at Julian, then at the advancing cleaners. If she wanted to survive, she needed Julian’s security grid back online. If he wanted his mother to survive, he needed the lethal precision of the woman who had just tried to throat-stab him minutes ago.
"Julian," Elena said, using his name for the first time, her cool tone snapping his focus back to her. "They have thermal imaging. They know exactly where we are sitting. If we stay behind this bed, we die."
"I have a hardened server room on this floor," Julian replied, his amber eyes darkening as he reloaded his weapon. "If I can get to the terminal, I can manually purge the outside network intrusion and lock this entire sector down."
"I'll clear the door," Elena said, her fingers tightening on her Glock. "You carry your mother."
An unspoken truce passed between them in a single fraction of a second. The tech titan and the syndicate’s top ghost were now the only thing standing between Kaelen’s cleanup crew and a total massacre.
Elena rolled out from behind the bed, firing three rapid shots that caught an advancing cleaner directly in the center of his ballistic mask, sending him crashing into a shattered display case.
