"What the hell did you just say, Ethan?" Marcus stammered, his eyes widening in utter, paralyzed disbelief as he stared at his older brother's broad back.
Chloe’s heart skipped a heavy, erratic beat. She was coming with Ethan? The words echoed in her mind over and over, sending a strange, terrifying jolt through her core that she couldn't quite understand.
Ethan didn't give Marcus another millisecond of his attention. He turned around, his face a mask of iron resolve, and reached down to grab Chloe’s hand. His grip was incredibly firm, warm, and overwhelmingly protective. Without a word, he pulled her out of the penthouse bedroom. Marcus threw on his clothes and chased them into the hallway, screaming curses, insults, and desperate threats that echoed off the marble walls, but Ethan didn't turn his head a single time. He kept his eyes locked straight ahead, his hand never loosening its grip on hers until they reached the privacy of the ground floor.
By the time they stepped out of the hotel lobby, a fierce, torrential downpour had struck the city. Jagged streaks of lightning flashed violently across the black sky, perfectly mimicking the emotional chaos roaring inside Chloe’s chest. The adrenaline from the confrontation was finally wearing off, and the crushing reality of the breakup was hitting her like a physical blow. Three years of her life, three years of complete devotion and sacrifice, gone in a single, ugly night.
She stopped abruptly right beneath the glass awning of the hotel, watching the rain flood the driveway, refusing to move another step. "Ethan, stop. Please, just stop."
Ethan turned to face her, his dark eyes instantly searching her pale, exhausted face. "Chloe, you cannot go back to that apartment tonight. Marcus knows the code, he has a key, and the moment he cools down, he will go there to corner you and manipulate you back into his arms. I won't allow him to break you again."
"I know that! I'm not going back there!" Chloe cried out, her emotions finally boiling over as hot tears spilled over her lashes, mixing with the cool mist of the rain blowing under the awning. "But I can't just... come with you! Ethan, think about it. You're his brother! This is insane. Everything about this night is a complete mess. I need to find a cheap hotel, I need to figure out my life, I need to breathe—"
"No," Ethan interrupted, taking a decisive step forward. He closed the remaining distance between them, his massive frame completely blocking out the freezing wind, wrapping her in his shadow. For the first time since she had known him, the icy, unapproachable CEO looked profoundly human. His eyes softened with a raw, burning intensity that made Chloe's breath hitch sharply in her throat. "I have stood by and watched that idiot take you for granted for three long years, Chloe. I stayed in the dark, in the background, only because I truly believed you loved him. Because I thought he made you happy."
Chloe stared up at him, her heart pounding so hard against her ribs she was certain he could hear it over the roaring thunder. "What... what are you saying, Ethan?"
Ethan stepped directly into the pouring rain, holding a massive black umbrella over her, bringing his face just inches from hers until she could see the fierce, long-hidden emotion swirling in his eyes.
"I'm saying he never deserved a single second of your time," Ethan whispered, his intense gaze dropping down to her lips before rising back to her eyes. "And I am done pretending I don't want you for myself."
