The morning sun spilled across the marble floors of the Valoria estate, but the atmosphere inside was tense. Arin stood beside her father in the grand hall, her crimson eyes calm and steady. She had already changed the future once by rejecting Serin. Now, the consequences were beginning to unfold.
The Duke was still present.
Duke Kael Ravenworth stood near the window, hands clasped behind his back, posture straight and imposing. His icy blue eyes flicked toward Arin every so often, as if reassessing her—measuring her strength, her resolve, her intentions.
Arin felt none of the fear she once had. Instead, she felt… safe.
Lira and Serin, however, were anything but calm.
Lira paced like a caged animal, her jaw tight, her fingers trembling with barely contained frustration. Serin stood beside her, trying to maintain his usual charming composure, but his eyes kept darting toward the Duke with unease.
Arin’s father cleared his throat. “Duke Ravenworth, you wished to speak with my daughter privately?”
Kael’s gaze settled on Arin. “Yes. If Lady Arin permits it.”
Arin nodded. “I do.”
Lira’s head snapped toward her. “Arin, you can’t—”
Kael’s voice cut through her protest like a blade. “Lady Lira, this matter does not concern you.”
Lira’s lips parted in outrage, but she swallowed her words. Even she knew better than to challenge the Duke directly.
Arin followed Kael into the adjoining chamber, her heartbeat steady. She had lived this moment before—well, not exactly this moment, but she remembered the Duke’s quiet loyalty, his hidden protectiveness. She remembered how he was the only one who never betrayed her.
Now, she finally understood why.
---
The Duke’s request
Kael closed the door behind them. The room was quiet, filled only with the soft ticking of a clock.
He turned to her, his expression unreadable. “Lady Arin.”
“Yes, Your Grace?”
His eyes softened—barely, but enough for her to notice. “Your decision earlier… rejecting Serin… was unexpected.”
Arin met his gaze without wavering. “It was necessary.”
Kael studied her for a long moment. “You see more than you let on.”
Arin’s breath caught. He suspects something.
But he didn’t press. Instead, he stepped closer.
“Lady Arin,” he said quietly, “I would like to formally request your hand in marriage.”
Arin’s heart skipped.
Not out of shock—she had expected this. But hearing it aloud, in her second life, felt different. Powerful. Right.
Before she could answer, the door burst open.
---
Serin and Lira interfere
Serin strode in, his face twisted with desperation. “Arin, you can’t accept that! You love me!”
Arin didn’t even flinch. “No. I don’t.”
Serin froze.
Lira shoved past him, her voice sharp. “You’re making a mistake! The Duke is cold, unfeeling, impossible to live with!”
Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Lady Lira, you are out of line.”
Lira ignored him. “Arin, think! Serin has always been by your side!”
Arin’s voice was calm. “Serin was never by my side. He was only beside my eyes.”
Serin’s face drained of color.
Kael stepped forward, placing himself between Arin and the pair. “Lady Arin has already made her stance clear.”
Lira’s composure cracked. “Father will never allow this!”
Arin’s father entered the room at that exact moment, followed by a tall figure dressed in imperial robes.
The Emperor.
---
The imperial plot revealed
The Emperor’s presence silenced everyone instantly. His golden eyes swept across the room, lingering on Lira and Serin with thinly veiled suspicion.
“Lady Arin,” he said, voice smooth, “I have heard of your decision.”
Arin bowed respectfully. “Your Majesty.”
The Emperor turned to Kael. “Duke Ravenworth, your request is… timely.”
Serin stepped forward. “Your Majesty, Arin and I—”
“You and Lady Arin,” the Emperor interrupted, “are not suited.”
Serin’s mouth snapped shut.
Lira tried to speak, but the Emperor raised a hand. “Enough. The imperial family has long suspected foul intentions surrounding the Valoria household.”
Lira stiffened. “Suspected… what?”
Kael’s voice was cold. “Your behavior today confirms much.”
The Emperor nodded. “The Duke and I have discussed this matter. A union between Lady Arin and Duke Ravenworth will ensure her protection—and stability for the realm.”
Arin’s breath caught. They knew. They suspected Lira and Serin even in my first life.
Lira’s face twisted with fury. “You can’t do this!”
The Emperor’s gaze hardened. “I can. And I will.”
He turned to Arin. “Lady Arin, do you accept the Duke’s hand?”
Arin looked at Kael.
His eyes—once cold—held a quiet warmth meant only for her.
She lifted her chin. “Yes. I accept.”
Lira’s strangled gasp filled the room.
Serin staggered back, defeated.
Kael bowed his head slightly, a rare smile touching his lips. “Then I vow to protect you, Lady Arin.”
Arin felt her second life shift.
This time, she wasn’t alone.
This time, she had allies.
This time, she had the Duke.
And this time, Lira and Serin would not win.
