The Duke’s mansion stood tall and imposing at the edge of the capital, its black stone walls gleaming under the morning sun. Carriages lined the courtyard, servants hurried with luggage, and knights stood at attention. Today, Arin was departing for the East—her first official journey as the Duke’s future bride.
She stood beside Kael, her crimson eyes calm, her posture regal. She felt stronger than she ever had in her first life. She wasn’t running away. She was stepping into her new future.
But Lira and Serin weren’t ready to let her go.
They arrived in a rush, breathless and panicked, as if the world were collapsing around them. Lira’s hair was disheveled, her eyes wild. Serin looked pale, desperate, and furious.
“Arin!” Lira shouted, storming across the courtyard. “You can’t leave!”
Arin didn’t flinch. “I can. And I will.”
Serin stepped forward, voice trembling. “You’re making a mistake. You belong with me.”
Kael’s knights moved instantly, blocking their path. The Duke himself stepped forward, his presence cold and commanding.
“Lady Arin is under my protection,” Kael said. “Stand down.”
Lira’s face twisted. “Protection? She doesn’t need protection! She needs her family!”
Arin’s voice was steady. “Family doesn’t try to control me.”
Lira froze, her lips parting in shock. She wasn’t used to Arin speaking back. She wasn’t used to Arin being strong.
Serin tried again, reaching out. “Arin, please. You love me. You always have.”
Arin met his gaze with icy clarity. “I don’t.”
Serin’s expression shattered.
Lira grabbed his arm, whispering frantically, “We can’t let her go. If she leaves with the Duke, everything will fall apart.”
Arin heard every word.
Kael’s eyes narrowed. “You two seem unusually concerned about Lady Arin’s movements.”
Serin stiffened. “We’re her family.”
Kael’s voice dropped. “Are you?”
Lira swallowed hard.
Before she could respond, a new voice echoed across the courtyard—smooth, powerful, unmistakable.
“I believe that question deserves an answer.”
Everyone turned.
The Emperor stepped out from the mansion’s entrance.
Lira froze.
Serin froze.
Even the knights straightened in shock.
No one had known he was here.
Arin bowed respectfully. Kael did the same, though his expression remained calm—he had expected this.
The Emperor walked forward, his golden eyes sweeping across the courtyard. “Lady Arin,” he said, “I came to ensure your departure is safe.”
Lira’s voice cracked. “Y-Your Majesty… why would you come here?”
The Emperor’s gaze sharpened. “Because the Duke and I have reason to believe Lady Arin’s life has been in danger.”
Serin’s breath hitched. “Danger? From who?”
The Emperor didn’t look away from them. “From those closest to her.”
Lira’s face drained of color.
Arin felt a cold satisfaction. They’re being cornered.
Kael stepped beside the Emperor, his voice low. “We have observed suspicious behavior. Interference. Manipulation.”
The Emperor nodded. “And now, attempts to stop Lady Arin from leaving the capital.”
Serin stammered, “We—we were just worried—”
“Worried?” the Emperor repeated. “Or afraid?”
Lira bit her lip so hard it nearly bled. Her eyes darted between Arin, Kael, and the Emperor, panic rising like a tide.
The Emperor turned to Arin. “Lady Arin, do you wish to depart with the Duke?”
Arin lifted her chin. “Yes, Your Majesty.”
Kael’s eyes warmed—just slightly.
The Emperor smiled. “Then I will personally ensure it.”
He gestured to the carriage. “Duke Ravenworth, escort your future bride.”
Lira’s breath caught. “Future—bride?”
Serin staggered back. “No… no, this can’t—”
The Emperor’s voice cut through their panic. “The Duke and Lady Arin are to be wed. Their union strengthens the empire. And it protects her from those who would harm her.”
Lira froze completely, her expression blank with shock.
Serin’s knees nearly buckled.
Arin stepped toward the carriage, Kael offering his hand. She took it without hesitation.
The Emperor watched Lira and Serin with a cold, knowing gaze. “You two should reflect on your behavior. The empire sees everything.”
Lira’s lips trembled.
Serin couldn’t speak.
Kael helped Arin into the carriage, his voice low enough only she could hear. “They won’t touch you again.”
Arin met his eyes. “I know.”
The carriage door closed.
The horses began to move.
And Lira and Serin stood frozen in the courtyard—caught, exposed, powerless—as Arin departed toward her new life.
Her second chance was no longer just beginning.
It was already rewriting destiny.
