Chapter 4: After the Moonlight War

Evan cried uncontrollably and begged the doctor.

“Please… please don’t let anything happen to Erica.”

Without wasting any time, the doctor rushed her into the operation theatre.

The operation went on for hours.

Finally… it was over.

When the doctor came out, Evan immediately stood up, staring at him with anxious eyes.

The doctor paused… then gently placed a hand on Evan’s shoulder.

“She’s going to be okay.”

Evan froze for a second… then relief washed over him.

He smiled through tears.

“Can I see her?”

“Not yet. She’s still unconscious.”

Even then, Evan felt a strange happiness. She was alive… that was enough for him.

The doctor handed him a prescription.

“Bring these medicines quickly.”

Evan didn’t waste a single second. He rushed out and got everything immediately.

By the time he returned… Erica had already opened her eyes. A nurse was with her.

The nurse quietly stepped out when Evan arrived.

Evan walked in, his eyes still wet.

“Are you stupid or what?” he said, voice breaking.

“What was the need to do that? You should’ve let him shoot me instead…”

He pulled her into a tight hug, crying.

Erica softly smiled.

“I couldn’t kill you…”

“Because for the first time… someone treated me like I mattered.”

Evan went silent.

Erica then asked softly,

“What happened to them?”

Evan quickly changed his tone.

“They’re gone. All of them.”

Erica looked at him.

“How? You were alone… and they were so many.”

Evan gently placed his hand on her head.

“Don’t think too much.”

Erica nodded slowly and smiled faintly.

But deep inside… neither of them was the same anymore.

Erica stayed in the hospital until she fully recovered. After she got better, Evan took her to a small, beautiful house—simple, quiet, and warm.

Erica looked around in surprise.

“Is this… ours? Our own home?”

Evan nodded softly.

“Yes… our home.”

Hearing that, Erica immediately hugged him tightly, like she didn’t want to let go.

After a moment, Evan gently pulled back and held her face with both hands. He just looked at her for a few seconds, as if trying to remember every detail of her face.

Then he slowly bent down on one knee, taking out a ring.

Evan’s voice was low, steady, but full of emotion.

“I don’t know much about love…”

“But I know one thing for sure.”

“I will always protect you.”

“Till my last breath… no one will ever separate us from each other.”

Erica’s eyes filled with tears instantly.

She didn’t even think for a second.

“Yes.”

Her voice shook a little, but her answer was clear.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Evan quickly stood up, gently wiped her tears with his thumb, and pulled her into a tight hug.

Erica hugged him back just as tightly, holding onto him like he was her only safe place in the world.

For the first time in both their lives…

It felt like peace.

Like they finally found something they had both been searching for… without even knowing it.
