The World Without Colors
Chapter 1: The Boy Who Saw the Impossible (Part 3)
The forest swallowed them.
Ancient trees stretched toward the pale sky like the fingers of sleeping giants. Their bark was smooth and silver, their leaves the color of ash. Even the wind seemed reluctant to pass through the branches.
Kael struggled to keep pace.
His lungs burned.
The strange crimson power that had burst from his body moments earlier had vanished, leaving behind a dull ache in every muscle.
Lyra finally slowed beside the ruins of a broken stone archway hidden beneath thick vines.
"We're safe... for now."
Kael leaned against a weathered pillar, trying to steady his breathing.
"What... were those things?"
"They are Blank Sentinels," Lyra replied. "They serve the Blank King. Their purpose is simple: erase anything connected to color."
Kael looked at his hand.
"I never asked for any of this."
"I know."
"Then why are they hunting me?"
Lyra was silent for several moments before answering.
"Because you awakened."
She reached into a leather satchel and removed an old book bound in cracked white leather. Time had nearly erased its cover, but one symbol remained untouched: a circle divided into seven fragments.
"This was written before the Great Bleaching."
Kael frowned.
"I thought nothing survived from that age."
"Almost nothing."
She carefully opened the brittle pages.
Most were blank.
Only one page held writing.
At its center was an illustration of a young man standing beneath a sky filled with impossible colors. Around him floated seven glowing lights.
Beneath the image, faded words could still be read:
When the world forgets every color, a child shall remember. The first flame shall awaken, and the empty throne shall tremble.
Kael stared at the page.
"That... looks like me."
Lyra nodded.
"I believe it is."
Before Kael could respond, the ground shuddered beneath their feet.
A low rumble echoed through the forest.
Birds burst from the trees in frightened silence.
Lyra snapped the book shut.
"They found us again."
A blinding white beam erupted into the sky beyond the forest.
One...
Then another.
Then dozens.
The Blank Sentinels were spreading through the woods.
"They're surrounding the forest," Kael whispered.
Lyra's expression hardened.
"Then we don't fight."
"We survive."
She pointed toward a narrow trail descending into darkness.
"Beyond this forest lies the Forgotten Road."
"Where does it lead?"
"To the last people who still remember what colors truly are."
Kael hesitated only a heartbeat before nodding.
The quiet life of a blacksmith's apprentice had ended the moment the crimson flame answered his call.
Now there was only one path forward.
Together they stepped onto the forgotten trail.
Behind them, hidden high among the branches, a pair of golden eyes watched in silence.
A faint smile appeared beneath a dark hood.
"The prophecy has begun."
Far beyond the forest, in the frozen halls of the Blank King's fortress, a single crack appeared across a flawless white wall.
The Blank King slowly rose from his throne.
Without eyes, he looked toward the distant horizon.
"So..."
"The Painter has chosen its heir."
His voice echoed through the endless chamber.
"Prepare the Four Generals."
"This world will remain empty."
"Even if I must erase destiny itself."
The pale moon disappeared behind heavy clouds.
Deep within the forgotten forest, Kael and Lyra continued walking toward a future neither of them could yet imagine.
Their journey had only just begun.
