The World Without Colors
Chapter 2: The Forgotten Road
The forest did not welcome travelers.
Its silence was unnatural.
No birds sang.
No insects buzzed.
Even the wind seemed afraid to disturb the ancient trees whose silver branches stretched across the sky like the ribs of a sleeping giant.
Kael followed Lyra along the narrow stone path, his boots crunching over cracked white leaves. Every few steps he glanced behind them, half expecting another Blank Sentinel to emerge from the darkness.
None did.
That frightened him even more.
"They stopped chasing us," Kael said quietly.
Lyra didn't slow her pace.
"No."
"They're waiting."
Kael frowned.
"Waiting for what?"
"For us to make a mistake."
The words settled heavily between them.
Hours passed before the forest began to change.
The silver trees grew older, their trunks twisted into impossible shapes. Moss covered broken statues whose faces had long since eroded away. Fragments of ancient roads disappeared beneath the roots, hinting that an entire civilization had once stood here.
Kael paused before one enormous statue.
A woman carved from white stone held a bowl in both hands.
Inside the bowl...
A single tiny flower bloomed.
It wasn't gray.
It wasn't white.
It shimmered with the faintest trace of blue.
Kael blinked.
The color vanished.
"You saw it," Lyra said without turning around.
"I... I did."
She smiled.
"The world is trying to remember."
Kael stared at the empty bowl.
"Or maybe it's trying to remember you."
Before he could reply, a deep growl echoed through the forest.
Both of them froze.
The sound came again.
Closer.
Branches snapped.
Something enormous moved between the trees.
Two glowing white eyes opened in the darkness.
Then four.
Then six.
Massive wolves emerged from the shadows, each nearly the size of a horse. Their fur blended perfectly with the forest, making them appear like living ghosts.
Kael instinctively stepped in front of Lyra.
"I'll buy you time."
Lyra laughed softly.
"You're brave."
"But very inexperienced."
She reached into her satchel and slowly removed the ancient paintbrush.
Instead of attacking, she dipped its tip into empty air.
A tiny droplet of emerald-green light appeared.
She painted a single circle.
The ground trembled.
Roots burst from beneath the earth, twisting around the wolves' legs without harming them.
The beasts stopped struggling.
Their growls faded.
One by one, they lowered their heads.
"They're... calming down," Kael whispered.
"They're protectors," Lyra replied.
"They attack only those whose hearts carry emptiness."
The largest wolf approached Kael.
Its glowing eyes studied him for several long moments.
Then it gently lowered its head beneath his hand.
Kael hesitated.
He slowly reached forward.
The wolf closed its eyes.
The instant Kael touched its fur, another vision flooded his mind.
He saw endless fields covered in flowers of every imaginable color.
Children laughed beneath a brilliant blue sky.
Artists painted towering murals across city walls.
Music echoed through the streets.
Life.
Hope.
Joy.
Then...
Darkness spread across the horizon like spilled ink.
Every color was swallowed.
Every smile disappeared.
And a towering figure cloaked in white raised a hand toward the heavens.
Kael gasped and stumbled backward.
The vision ended.
The wolves had vanished.
Only drifting white leaves remained where they had stood.
Lyra watched him carefully.
"What did you see?"
Kael's breathing was uneven.
"I think..."
"I just witnessed the beginning of the Great Bleaching."
Far above the forest canopy, unseen by either of them, a black raven circled silently.
Its eyes burned with a faint crimson glow.
Someone else was watching.
Someone who had waited centuries for the Child of Color to awaken.
