Chapter 4: A Prison Without Chains

The crimson moon hung low over Varek, casting an eerie glow across the palace grounds.

Seraphina couldn't sleep.

The dragon's voice still echoed in her mind.

"Trust no king."

She paced the room, replaying every moment since Noctara fell. Her father's face... General Rowan's final smile... the flames consuming the city she had called home.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Three soft taps.

Before she could answer, the door opened.

Lady Elara rushed inside.

"Elara!"

Seraphina threw her arms around her friend.

"I thought you were..."

"I know." Elara hugged her tightly, tears shining in her eyes. "I thought I'd lost you too."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Elara pulled away.

"The soldiers found me unconscious in the forest after the explosion. Prince Kael ordered that I be brought here instead of leaving me behind."

Seraphina frowned.

"He did?"

Elara nodded.

"He also assigned guards to protect me."

Seraphina looked away.

Why?

Every kind act from Kael made it harder to believe he was the monster she'd imagined.

No.

She couldn't forget what his army had done.

Meanwhile...

Kael stood in the palace training yard, striking a wooden practice post with his sword.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Each blow echoed through the empty courtyard.

"You'll break it before sunrise."

Lucien leaned lazily against a pillar, eating an apple.

Kael ignored him.

"You've been training for two hours."

Silence.

Lucien sighed.

"You're thinking about the princess."

Kael stopped swinging.

"No."

"Liar."

Kael sheathed his sword.

"I've known you since we were children," Lucien said with a grin. "Every time something bothers you, you train until the weapons surrender."

Kael gave him a flat look.

"The Soul Bond changes everything."

"It changes nothing."

Lucien raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"I still intend to end this war."

"And what happens when your father decides the princess is no longer useful?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

His father would kill Seraphina the moment she became an inconvenience.

And for reasons he couldn't explain...

He couldn't allow that to happen.

The next morning...

Seraphina was escorted to the palace gardens by two guards.

The gardens were unlike anything she'd seen before.

Silver roses bloomed beneath black-leaved trees.

Crystal streams shimmered under bridges carved from obsidian.

It was beautiful...

...and lonely.

She knelt beside a fountain, staring at her reflection.

"I expected you to escape by now."

She didn't need to turn around.

"I considered it."

Kael approached slowly, carrying a small wooden box.

"So why didn't you?"

She gave him a tired smile.

"Because I don't know these lands."

"And because if I fail..."

"They'll kill Elara."

Kael didn't deny it.

Instead, he placed the box on the fountain's edge.

"For you."

Seraphina stared suspiciously.

"I'm not accepting gifts."

"It's not a gift."

"Then what is it?"

"An apology."

Her eyes widened.

She slowly opened the box.

Inside rested a delicate silver pendant.

Its center held a small sapphire shaped like a flame.

"My mother's necklace..."

She whispered.

"It survived?"

Kael nodded.

"I found it in the palace ruins."

"I thought it belonged to your family."

"It belongs to Noctara."

Seraphina gently picked it up, tears filling her eyes.

"This was all I had left of her."

For the first time...

She looked at Kael without hatred.

Only confusion.

"Why are you doing this?"

His answer came quietly.

"Because some things shouldn't be lost to war."

Before she could respond—

A deafening scream echoed across the gardens.

The ground shook violently.

Birds scattered into the sky.

"What was that?"

Kael's face hardened.

"The dungeon."

Another roar followed.

Much louder this time.

The silver roses around them suddenly burst into flames.

Not ordinary fire.

Golden fire.

The mark on Seraphina's wrist burned painfully.

Kael grabbed his own wrist at the exact same moment.

The Soul Bond was reacting.

From beneath the palace...

A monstrous roar shook the entire kingdom.

Then...

Everything fell silent.

Even the wind stopped blowing.

A palace guard came sprinting toward them, his face pale.

"Your Highness!"

He dropped to one knee before Kael.

"The Black Vault..."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What about it?"

"The seal..."

The guard swallowed hard.

"It's cracked."

Far below the palace, inside the ancient chamber, a single massive golden eye slowly opened in the darkness.

A deep voice rumbled through the stone walls.

"So..."

"The heirs have finally found each other."

A colossal claw pressed against the fractured seal.

One crack became two.

Then three.

The prison that had held the creature for a thousand years...

...was beginning to break.
