Chapter 5: The Black Vault

The roar echoed through every corridor of the palace.

Servants screamed.

Soldiers rushed toward the lower levels with drawn swords, though many of them looked terrified. Even the bravest warriors of Varek knew the stories surrounding the Black Vault.

No one entered it.

No one spoke of what slept beneath it.

And no one ever returned if the king summoned them there.

Kael turned to the guard, his expression hard.

"Take the princess back to her chambers."

"I'm not going anywhere," Seraphina snapped.

"The dungeon isn't safe."

She folded her arms.

"You think locking me in a room is safer?"

"I know it is."

"You don't get to decide that."

Before Kael could answer, another violent tremor shook the palace.

The ground cracked beneath the garden path.

Without thinking, Seraphina stumbled forward.

Kael caught her before she hit the ground.

For one brief moment...

They froze.

His arm was wrapped around her waist.

Her hands rested against his chest.

Their eyes met.

The mark on their wrists began to glow.

Golden flames danced around their joined hands.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Then—

"Ahem."

Lucien stood a few steps away with an amused grin.

"I hate to interrupt... whatever this is..."

Seraphina quickly stepped back, cheeks warming.

"This isn't what it looks like."

Lucien smiled wider.

"I didn't say anything."

Kael shot him a warning look.

"Enough."

Lucien raised both hands.

"I'm leaving."

As he walked away, he muttered just loudly enough for Seraphina to hear.

"The Soul Bond is working faster than I expected."

"It is not!" Seraphina called after him.

Lucien only laughed.

Deep beneath the palace...

King Aldric stood before the enormous stone door of the Black Vault.

Cracks spread across its surface like lightning.

Ancient chains rattled violently.

The hooded advisor beside him took a nervous step back.

"My king..."

"The seal has never weakened before."

Aldric placed his hand on the stone.

Golden light seeped through the cracks.

"It isn't weakening."

"It's responding."

"To the princess?"

A smile slowly spread across the king's face.

"No."

"To both of them."

He closed his eyes.

"So... the prophecy is true after all."

Suddenly...

A massive claw struck the other side of the door.

BOOM!

The entire chamber shook.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Another strike.

BOOM!

A deep, ancient voice echoed from within.

"Release me..."

Even Aldric's smile faded.

That afternoon...

Seraphina wandered through the palace library while Elara helped organize damaged books.

"I still don't trust him," Seraphina admitted.

Elara looked up.

"Prince Kael?"

"He says one thing..."

"But does another."

Elara smiled gently.

"Sometimes actions tell us more than words."

Seraphina sighed.

"I watched his army destroy my home."

"I know."

"And yet..."

She looked down at the sapphire necklace.

"He saved this."

"He spared us."

"He hasn't treated me like a prisoner."

Elara carefully closed the book in her hands.

"Maybe he isn't the enemy."

Seraphina shook her head.

"No."

"The war made him my enemy long before we met."

"But perhaps..."

She hesitated.

"...not by choice."

Night fell over Varek.

Rain poured from the sky.

Kael stood alone on the highest balcony overlooking the city.

Lightning flashed across the mountains.

Footsteps approached.

"You always come here when something troubles you."

Kael didn't turn.

"I wanted silence."

"And instead, you got me."

Lucien leaned against the stone railing.

"You've been protecting the princess."

"I'm protecting the Soul Bond."

Lucien laughed.

"Keep telling yourself that."

Kael remained silent.

Lucien's smile slowly disappeared.

"You know your father."

"If he discovers the bond can't be controlled..."

"He'll use Seraphina."

"I know."

"And if she refuses?"

Kael closed his eyes.

"I won't let that happen."

Lucien studied his friend's face.

It had been years since he'd heard Kael speak with such certainty.

For the first time...

The Shadow Prince had something worth protecting.

Later that night...

Seraphina woke suddenly.

A voice whispered her name.

"Seraphina..."

She looked around.

The room was empty.

Again.

"Follow me..."

The golden mark on her wrist began to glow.

Before she realized what she was doing...

She stepped into the hallway.

The palace guards were asleep.

Every candle had gone out.

Only the glowing mark lit her path.

She walked through silent corridors...

Down endless staircases...

Past forgotten doors...

Until she reached a narrow passage hidden behind a tapestry.

At the end of it stood an ancient stone door.

It was covered in dragon carvings.

The moment Seraphina touched it—

The carvings lit up.

The door slowly opened.

A burst of warm air escaped from within.

She stepped inside.

At the center of the chamber rested a crystal pedestal.

Floating above it...

Was a single feather.

It burned with golden fire.

As Seraphina reached toward it, a voice echoed through the chamber.

Soft.

Gentle.

Yet powerful enough to make the walls tremble.

"Welcome, Child of Flame."

Seraphina spun around.

No one was there.

Then, from the shadows, a magnificent golden dragon emerged—not with claws bared, but with ancient, intelligent eyes filled with sadness.

It lowered its great head.

"You have finally come."
