Episode 2: Green Lights & First Blood

The roar of engines drowned out everything else.

Thirty-two cars lined up beneath Harbor Bridge.

Headlights cut through the darkness.

The crowd pressed against the barriers, chanting names, waving flags, filming every second.

Ava slipped into her Skyline and fastened her helmet.

Her heart wasn't racing because she was nervous.

It was racing because she was finally here.

Midnight Rush.

Across the grid, Ryder sat in his McLaren, hands resting calmly on the steering wheel.

His expression hadn't changed.

Like winning was just another Tuesday.

Ava caught sight of him through her windshield.

"...Cocky."

She smirked.

"We'll see about that."

---

"Drivers..."

The announcer's voice echoed through the speakers.

"Tonight's opening race isn't about elimination."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

"This race determines tomorrow's matchups."

A few racers relaxed.

Others didn't.

The announcer continued.

"Top eight drivers receive a direct advantage."

"Everyone else..."

"...will have to earn it."

The crowd roared.

---

Back in the pit lane...

Mason stood with Tara and Sienna.

Mason folded his arms.

"So..."

"Who's betting on Ava?"

Tara immediately raised her hand.

"Always."

Sienna looked up from her tablet.

"Statistically, Ryder has the highest probability of winning."

Mason sighed dramatically.

"I hate statistics."

"They don't care."

---

The countdown lights switched on.

Five red lights.

The entire harbor fell silent.

Five.

Ava tightened her grip.

Four.

Ryder didn't move.

Three.

Someone in the crowd shouted,

"LET'S GO!"

Two.

Engines screamed.

One.

Green.

Every car exploded off the line.

The sound shook the bridge.

Ava launched perfectly, weaving between two cars before the first corner.

"Nice!"

Mason shouted.

"That's my girl!"

Ryder remained in front.

Smooth.

Precise.

No wasted movement.

Ava clicked her tongue.

"Not for long."

She downshifted and dived into the next corner.

The Skyline slid sideways in a perfect drift.

The crowd erupted.

"THAT'S WHY THEY CALL HER THE DRIFT QUEEN!"

She overtook one car.

Then another.

Fourth place.

Third.

A grin spread across her face.

"This is more like it."

---

Up ahead...

Ryder checked his mirror.

Blue Skyline.

Closing fast.

"...Interesting."

Most racers struggled to keep up.

Ava was gaining.

Fast.

---

A long straight stretched ahead.

Ava floored the accelerator.

The Skyline surged forward.

She pulled alongside Ryder.

The crowd completely lost it.

"They're side by side!"

"No way!"

Mason nearly spilled his coffee.

"They're actually doing it!"

Tara screamed louder than everyone else.

"GO, AVA!"

For three glorious seconds...

Neither driver gave an inch.

The McLaren.

The Skyline.

Running door to door beneath the city lights.

Ava glanced sideways.

Ryder noticed.

Without warning...

He looked back.

Their eyes met for the briefest second.

Then—

the next corner arrived.

Ryder braked impossibly late.

The McLaren slipped ahead by half a car.

Ava laughed inside her helmet.

"...Okay."

"I respect that."

---

The race continued.

Every corner became another battle.

Every straight another challenge.

Neither wanted second place.

---

Back in the viewing area...

Tara grabbed Mason's arm.

"Did you see that?"

"They looked at each other!"

"They're racing."

"I know."

"They had eye contact."

"...You need help."

"I need them together."

Sienna didn't even glance up.

"It's been twelve minutes."

"What has?"

"Tara has already started shipping them."

"I HAVE NOT!"

"You named them 'Rayva' three minutes ago."

Mason blinked.

"...You actually did?"

Tara looked away.

"...Maybe."

---

Final lap.

Only one corner remained.

Ryder first.

Ava second.

The gap?

Less than a second.

She smiled.

"One chance."

The final hairpin approached.

Everyone expected Ryder to defend.

Instead...

He left the inside line open.

Ava's eyes widened.

"A trap?"

She thought for half a heartbeat.

Then went for it anyway.

The Skyline dived inside.

For a moment...

It actually looked like she'd done it.

Until Ryder accelerated earlier.

The McLaren launched out of the corner with unbelievable traction.

Ava laughed.

"You planned that."

She crossed the finish line...

Exactly six-tenths of a second behind him.

---

The checkered flag waved.

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

First.

Ryder Calloway.

Second.

Ava Carter.

The rest of the field followed behind.

---

Back in the paddock...

Ava climbed out of her car and pulled off her helmet.

Before she could take two steps...

A voice spoke behind her.

"You drift too much."

She turned.

Ryder.

Standing with his helmet under one arm.

She raised an eyebrow.

"And you brake too late."

"It works."

"So does my drifting."

Silence.

Then...

Ryder nodded once.

"...Fair."

Ava smiled.

"Was that..."

"A compliment?"

"It was an observation."

"Close enough."

For the first time...

Their rivalry felt different.

Not hostile.

Competitive.

Like each had finally found someone worth chasing.

Just then—

another voice interrupted.

"So..."

Both of them turned.

A young man leaned casually against a bright red sports car.

A confident grin spread across his face.

"Looks like Midnight Rush finally has two drivers worth watching."

His eyes settled on Ryder.

Then Ava.

"My name's Luca."

"And I hope neither of you gets too comfortable."

Ava smirked.

"I like him already."

Ryder looked completely unimpressed.

"...We'll see."

Luca laughed.

"Oh..."

"This tournament is going to be fun."
