Harbor City looked different from a race car.
Streetlights blurred into streaks of gold.
Glass buildings reflected headlights like mirrors.
The city wasn't sleeping.
It was watching.
The crowd packed both sides of downtown streets, waiting behind barriers as engines echoed between skyscrapers.
Tonight's challenge:
The Harbor Sprint.
Two drivers.
One route.
One winner.
Ava adjusted her gloves inside the Skyline.
Across from her—
Luca leaned casually against his red sports car.
Far too casually.
"Still time to back out," he called.
Ava smiled.
"Still time to stop talking."
"I like her," Luca announced to nobody in particular.
"I don't," Ryder muttered nearby.
Mason nearly dropped his coffee.
"Oh my God."
Tara grabbed his arm immediately.
"Did you hear that?!"
"Hear what?"
"That."
"That could mean literally anything."
"It absolutely does not."
Sienna glanced up from her tablet.
"His heart rate increased by six beats per minute when Luca started talking to Ava."
Silence.
Mason blinked.
"...How do you know that?"
"I have access to race telemetry."
"That's somehow worse."
---
The announcer's voice echoed across downtown.
"Drivers to the starting line."
The crowd erupted.
Ava climbed into her Skyline.
Luca slid into his car.
The countdown lights activated.
Three.
Two.
One.
Green.
Both cars launched forward.
The crowd exploded.
Luca took the early lead.
Barely.
Ava stayed glued to his rear bumper.
Corner after corner—
neither driver managed to create space.
"He isn't bad," Ava admitted.
Luca's voice crackled through the race radio.
"You sound surprised."
"You sound annoying."
"That's because I am."
---
The first major obstacle approached.
Parking garage shortcut.
Riskier route.
Faster route.
Luca went left.
Ava followed instantly.
Inside the garage—
concrete pillars flew past.
Tight turns.
Zero room for mistakes.
Luca laughed through the radio.
"You're either brave or insane."
"Both."
"Fair answer."
---
Back in the viewing area—
Tara paced dramatically.
"This is stressful."
"It's a race," Mason replied.
"That's what makes it stressful."
Sienna watched the live map.
"They're neck and neck."
Mason frowned.
"Why does that sound threatening when you say it?"
"Because it is."
---
Inside the garage—
Ava saw her chance.
A small opening.
Tiny.
Ridiculous.
Probably impossible.
Perfect.
The Skyline slid sideways.
Luca's eyes widened.
"No way."
She squeezed through the gap.
Half a car ahead.
The crowd outside erupted as she burst from the garage exit first.
Luca laughed.
Actually laughed.
"Okay."
"That was impressive."
"I know."
"You say that a lot."
"Because I'm impressive a lot."
---
Final stretch.
Only one bridge remained.
Luca moved alongside her.
Door to door.
Neither backing down.
The finish line approached rapidly.
Closer.
Closer.
Then—
the Skyline crossed first.
By less than a bumper.
The city exploded into cheers.
Ava had won.
---
Back in the paddock—
Ava climbed from the car grinning.
Luca walked over shaking his head.
"I lost by half a meter."
"You did."
"I hate half meters."
"You'll survive."
"Unfortunate."
He held out his hand.
"Good race."
Ava shook it.
"Good race."
Unfortunately—
that exact moment was when Ryder walked past.
Of course it was.
Luca noticed immediately.
His grin widened.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
"So," Luca said loudly.
"Celebration dinner?"
Ava blinked.
"What?"
Ryder kept walking.
Completely unaffected.
Probably.
Maybe.
Luca watched him leave.
Then looked back at Ava.
"Oh that's interesting."
"What is?"
"He heard me."
"And?"
"And nothing."
His smile said otherwise.
---
An hour later—
new rankings appeared.
1. Ryder Calloway.
2. Ava Carter.
3. Luca Moretti.
The gap between first and second had shrunk.
A lot.
Ryder stared at the numbers.
A familiar voice appeared beside him.
"Getting nervous?"
He glanced sideways.
Ava.
Smiling.
Definitely enjoying herself.
"No."
"You should."
"I'll consider it."
She folded her arms.
"You're very bad at trash talk."
"I don't need trash talk."
"Confident."
"Realistic."
Ava pointed accusingly.
"That's my line."
"I improved it."
"You stole it."
"Borrowed."
She laughed.
Against his better judgment—
the corner of Ryder's mouth twitched.
Again.
Ava immediately pointed.
"There!"
"What?"
"That was definitely a smile."
"It wasn't."
"It absolutely was."
Before he could answer—
Mason appeared out of nowhere.
"Oh thank God."
Ryder frowned.
"...Why?"
"Because if I was the only one seeing this I'd think I was hallucinating."
Tara arrived seconds later.
"YOU SMILED!"
Ryder looked horrified.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I absolutely didn't."
Sienna looked up from her tablet.
"Timestamp 8:42 PM."
Ryder stared.
"Do you record everything?"
"Yes."
"...Concerning."
"Frequently."
Ava laughed so hard she almost dropped her helmet.
For the first time in a long time—
Ryder didn't mind the noise.
That realization was somehow more concerning than all of them combined.
Across the paddock—
Luca noticed the look on Ryder's face.
Then smiled slowly.
"Oh."
This tournament just became much more entertaining.
