The Next-Door Sanctuary..

The very next morning, the quiet corridor of Siya’s apartment building was filled with the sounds of heavy thuds and scraping metal.

Siya, wrapping a shawl tightly around her shoulders, opened her door to investigate the disturbance. To her utter bewilderment, she saw two delivery men hauling a sleek, modern wooden bookshelf into the vacant apartment directly across from hers.

Standing in the doorway of that apartment, directing the men with a clipboard in hand, was Shiyaan. He wore a simple grey sweatshirt, looking comfortable and entirely at home.

Siya froze, her mind struggling to process the scene.

Shiyaan turned around and noticed her. A bright, genuine smile lit up his face—a smile that could melt the stubbornest mountain snow. He broke into a light jog, crossing the small hallway to stand before her.

"Good morning, Miss Siya!" he greeted warmly, his eyes sparkling.

Siya stared at him, her expression a mix of shock and irritation. "Shiyaan? What... what is the meaning of this? What are you doing here?"

"Oh, isn't it wonderful?" Shiyaan rubbed the back of his neck, a charmingly boyish flush spreading across his cheeks. "My previous lease ended unexpectedly, and I was looking for a quiet place close to the school. I found this vacant apartment yesterday. It turns out, we are neighbors now!"

Siya looked at him suspiciously. The timing was far too precise to be a coincidence. "You followed me," she accused flatly.

Shiyaan’s expression turned serious, his gaze soft and entirely honest. "I wanted to make sure you were safe, Siya. After what happened... I couldn't rest knowing you were living all alone in an isolated area. I don't mean to intrude on your life, I promise. But as a neighbor, at least I can know that if you ever need help, I am just a door away."

Siya opened her mouth to snap at him, to tell him to mind his own business again, but the words caught in her throat. Look at him. He had moved his entire life just to ensure her safety, demanding nothing in return. For someone who had spent her entire existence being an invisible servant to people who shared her blood, this overwhelming, unselfish care from a stranger was terrifying—and incredibly beautiful.

She looked away, her voice losing its sharp edge. "Do whatever you want. It's a free world."

"Wait, Siya!" Shiyaan called out gently before she could close her door. "I am hosting a small housewarming gathering tonight. Just a simple dinner. Will you please come? I... I will really be waiting for you."

Siya paused. She looked at his hopeful eyes. The thought of sitting in her own dark room, eating leftover bread, felt suddenly unbearable compared to the warmth radiating from across the hall.

"Fine," she murmured softly. "Thank you. I will come."

That evening marked the true beginning of a beautiful transformation. Shiyaan’s apartment was minimalist but cozy, filled with the scent of fresh pine and warm food. True to his promise, he kept things incredibly comfortable for her. He didn't crowd her space; he sat across the small table, serving her home-cooked food with quiet grace.

As the days turned into weeks, the parallel lines of their lives began to intertwine beautifully.

Working at the same school and living across the hall, their encounters became a natural, comforting routine. They walked to school together in the mornings, their footsteps falling into a synchronized rhythm. Shiyaan learned her silent cues—he knew exactly when she felt overwhelmed by a crowd and would subtly position his large frame to shield her. Siya learned his cues too—she noticed that when thunder cracked too loudly, Shiyaan’s breathing would stutter, a remnant of his childhood car crash trauma. On those days, she would quietly slide a cup of hot chamomile tea onto his desk in the staff room, never saying a word, but letting him know he wasn't alone.

Slowly, imperceptibly, the thick ice around Siya’s heart began to thaw.

She realized that her profound childhood fear of men didn't apply to Shiyaan. Near him, she didn't feel suffocated; she felt like she could finally breathe. He was her safe haven. Her attachment to him grew silently, deeply, rooted in mutual respect and shared brokenness. The quiet affection blossomed into a profound, consuming love.

Yet, neither of them dared to speak the words aloud.

Siya was terrified. She feared that if she confessed her love, her past trauma, her deep psychological scars, and her abusive family dynamics would eventually drag Shiyaan down, ruining his gentle soul. Shiyaan, on the other hand, was haunted by a different ghost. Having lost his parents in a sudden, violent twist of fate, he carried a deep-seated fear of attachment. He loved Siya so intensely that the mere thought of proposing and then losing her to some unforeseen tragedy terrified him. He chose to remain her silent guardian, hiding his burning love behind gentle smiles and protective gestures.

And then, the fragile peace they had built was shattered by a ghost from the past....
