The Founder's Secret

Chapter 4 — The Founder’s Secret

The silence between them felt heavier than the night itself.

Elara searched Stefan's face, hoping he would deny it.

He couldn't.

"It wasn't an accident," Stefan said quietly.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You knew?"

"I was there."

The words hit harder than any scream.

"You watched my parents die?"

"No!" Stefan took a step forward. "I tried to save them."

Damon looked away, unusually serious.

"There were too many of them."

"Them?" Elara asked.

Stefan sighed. "Vampires... and something else."

Before Elara could ask another question, the unconscious girl on the forest floor woke with a gasp.

"What... what happened?"

Damon knelt beside her, looking into her eyes.

"You slipped while hiking. You hit your head. You don't remember anything."

The girl's frightened expression softened.

"I... I slipped."

She stood up slowly and wandered out of the forest as if nothing had happened.

Elara stared in disbelief.

"You... you made her forget."

"It's called compulsion," Damon replied. "One of the many vampire abilities."

Elara took another step back.

"So everything I've believed... monsters, myths... they're real."

Stefan nodded.

"More real than you can imagine."

---

The next morning, Blackridge High buzzed with rumors.

Several students had reported hearing strange howls in the woods the previous night.

Some claimed they had seen glowing eyes.

Others laughed it off as another ghost story.

Bonnie rushed over to Elara before first period.

"You look terrible."

"I didn't sleep."

"You've been saying that a lot lately."

Before Elara could answer, the principal's voice echoed through the hallway.

"Students, please welcome a new transfer student."

The classroom door opened.

A beautiful young woman walked in with long auburn hair and striking green eyes.

She smiled politely.

"My name is Katerina Pierce."

The moment Stefan saw her...

The color drained from his face.

Damon, standing outside the classroom window, froze completely.

Katerina's eyes met theirs.

A slow, mysterious smile spread across her lips.

She mouthed two words only they could understand.

"Miss me?"

Stefan's hands clenched into fists.

"It can't be..."

---

That evening, the brothers met in the cellar beneath their old mansion.

"It's her," Damon said.

"No," Stefan replied. "It can't be. We watched her die."

Damon shook his head.

"We watched someone burn."

He looked toward the old family portrait hanging on the wall.

"If Katerina is alive..."

"...then someone has been lying to us for over a century."

At that same moment, Katerina stood alone in the cemetery, placing a single black rose on an ancient grave.

A hooded figure stepped out from the shadows.

"Did they recognize you?" the stranger asked.

She smiled without looking up.

"Of course."

"And the girl?"

Katerina's smile widened.

"She's exactly where fate wants her to be."

The hooded figure lowered their hood, revealing glowing silver eyes.

"The Moonstone must awaken before the next full moon."

Katerina nodded.

"It will."

She looked toward the distant lights of Blackridge.

"And when it does..."

"Every supernatural creature in this town will come to claim it."

The wind swept through the cemetery, carrying with it the chilling promise that Blackridge's darkest secrets were only beginning to surface.
