The Founder's Ball

Chapter 5 — The Founder’s Ball

Three days passed.

Blackridge tried to return to normal, but whispers followed every hallway.

Students talked about the strange howls in the woods.

Others couldn't stop talking about the mysterious new transfer student, Katerina Pierce.

She was beautiful.

Elegant.

And somehow seemed to know everyone before they even introduced themselves.

---

Elara couldn't stop watching her.

There was something unsettling about Katerina.

Whenever their eyes met, Katerina smiled as if they shared a secret.

After history class, Bonnie nudged Elara.

"Okay, tell me I'm not imagining things."

"What?"

"That new girl keeps staring at you."

Elara glanced across the room.

Katerina was gone.

"So does Stefan," Bonnie added.

"And Damon."

"I think everyone in this school has forgotten personal space."

Elara forced a laugh.

If only Bonnie knew the truth.

---

That evening, the town square buzzed with excitement.

The annual Founder's Ball was only two nights away.

Mayor Richard Lockwood stood on the stage.

"This celebration honors the families who built Blackridge over two hundred years ago."

People applauded.

Stefan, standing beside Elara, didn't.

"They're celebrating a lie," he whispered.

Before Elara could ask what he meant, Damon appeared carrying two cups of coffee.

"You're both depressing," Damon said.

"Here."

He handed Elara one.

She accepted it cautiously.

"I thought vampires didn't drink coffee."

"We don't need to."

"But it helps us blend in."

Stefan rolled his eyes.

"You don't exactly blend in."

"I don't try."

Elara laughed despite herself.

For a brief moment...

Everything felt normal.

---

Across the square, Katerina watched them.

A familiar voice spoke behind her.

"They're getting close."

She turned.

The hooded figure from the cemetery stood hidden beneath the trees.

"The girl trusts them," Katerina replied.

"Good."

"But Stefan will protect her."

The figure smiled.

"He won't be able to."

---

Late that night...

Stefan woke suddenly.

Someone was in his room.

A woman stood beside the window.

Moonlight illuminated her face.

Stefan's eyes widened.

"No..."

She smiled softly.

"Hello, Stefan."

His voice barely escaped.

"...Katherine."

She looked exactly as she had 160 years ago.

Not a day older.

Stefan stepped backward in disbelief.

"I watched you die."

"So did Damon."

Katherine's smile deepened.

"And yet..."

She slowly walked toward him.

"I'm here."

Stefan searched her face.

"You've been pretending to be Katerina Pierce."

"I've had many names."

"Why come back now?"

She looked out toward the sleeping town.

"Because the Moonstone has awakened."

"And when it reaches its full power..."

She turned back to Stefan.

"...every vampire, werewolf, and witch in Blackridge will come to claim it."

Stefan's heart sank.

"You planned this."

"I planned everything."

She stepped closer until only inches separated them.

"Even Elara."

Stefan's eyes flashed with anger.

"Stay away from her."

Katherine smiled.

"I can't."

She leaned close enough to whisper.

"Because she is the key."

Before Stefan could stop her...

She vanished into the darkness.

Only the curtains moved in the cold night breeze.

Stefan immediately grabbed his phone and dialed Damon.

Damon answered on the first ring.

"What happened?"

Stefan's voice was tense.

"She's alive."

A long silence followed.

Then Damon spoke quietly.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

Neither brother noticed the shadow standing outside the mansion.

Hidden among the trees.

Watching them.

Its silver eyes glowed in the darkness.

And in its hand...

It held an ancient map leading to the Moonstone's resting place.
