Clara didn't go alone. Her lifelong best friend, Julia Martins,
along with Julia's mother, Berenice, who had been living in another small town in the interior, decided it was time to seek a better future together. With the money from selling the house, the two young women moved to the capital and rented a small, modest apartment. Berenice came with them, bringing a mother's warmth and taking care of the home so the girls could focus on building their futures.
Berenice Martins, Julia's mother
A year passed in Sao Paulo. Under Berenice's protection, Clara and Julia blossomed. They landed jobs at a charming cafe downtown and, through relentless studying and sleepless nights, earned full scholarships at a prestigious private university. Clara chose Business Administration, determined to understand the mechanisms of the corporate world and change her life, while Julia — outgoing and creative — enrolled in Graphic Design.
Now, at twenty-three, Clara finally felt like she could breathe. Julia, about to turn twenty-four, was her safe harbor. That was why, after plenty of insistence from her friend and a group of college classmates, Clara gave in to the invitation to go to a trendy nightclub in Vila Olimpia.
"Come on, Clarinha! All you do is study and work. You need to live a little — meet people!" Julia insisted while finishing up her lipstick.
Clara — reserved, averse to excess, and someone who had never had a boyfriend in her life — agreed to go only to keep her friend company. She put on a simple dress that gently hugged her natural curves and set one condition: not a single drop of alcohol would touch her lips.
The nightclub was packed. The bass from the electronic music vibrated in her chest, and neon lights sliced through the darkness. Clara stayed in a corner of the VIP section, swaying timidly to the beat, watching Julia enjoy herself. Seeing her friend's shyness, Julia went to the bar and returned minutes later with an elegant glass.
"Here, Clarinha. It's a fruit cocktail — no alcohol. The bartender went all out!" Julia shouted over the music before being pulled onto the dance floor by a classmate.
Clara drank it. The flavor was sweet, exotic, and refreshing. Her throat parched from the smoke and heat, she drained the glass quickly. Finding the drink delicious and spotting a waiter passing nearby with a tray of identical glasses, she reached out and asked for another.
What Clara didn't know was that, at that exact moment, chaos had erupted behind the bar.
A wealthy, obsessive woman sitting in one of the VIP booths had bribed a bartender to spike a powerful aphrodisiac into the drink meant for a businessman she was trying to seduce. In the heat of the moment and the rush of service, the waiter mixed up the orders. The spiked glass ended up in Clara's innocent hands.
After finishing the second drink, Clara felt the impact immediately. Her cheeks began to burn. A sudden, overwhelming heat spread through her veins, making her heart hammer uncontrollably in her chest. Her senses blurred, and a tingling sensation took over her skin. She tried to focus on the dance floor to find Julia, but the colored lights melted into psychedelic smears. The blaring music seemed to suffocate her.
"Julia..." she tried to call out, but her voice came out as an inaudible whisper.
Summoning what little strength she had left, Clara stumbled toward the bathroom corridor, desperate for air and water. She entered the marble restroom, turned on the faucet with trembling hands, and splashed cold water on her face. It didn't help. The internal fire consuming her seemed to burn from the inside out, clouding her mind and awakening sensations that were dangerous and entirely foreign to her innocence.
Terrified and frightened by her own body, she pushed open the bathroom door to go find help. The moment she crossed the threshold into the corridor, her body collided with a solid wall.
It was a man — very tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a black linen shirt casually unbuttoned at the neck.
It was Cesar Montenegro, who had come to the club only to close an informal deal with investors and was already on his way out, bored.
When he noticed the girl stumble against his chest, Cesar instinctively grabbed her arms to steady her. His touch sent a shock through Clara's feverish body. She raised her brown eyes — dilated from the substance and glistening with tears and involuntary desire. Cesar froze for a second. There was a frightened purity in this young woman that clashed violently with the lust emanating from her parted lips.
Clara's mind shut down to logic. The tingling in her body begged for that contact. From that point on, the night dissolved into disconnected flashes: the scent of his expensive, woody cologne invading her senses; the firmness of strong arms carrying her away from the noise; the leather seats of a luxury car; the ceiling of a lavish penthouse; and finally, the softness of satin sheets. It was a whirlwind of intense sensations, a feverish dream where the pain of the past and the urgency of the present fused into whispers and burning touches in the darkness.
Waking up was a collision with the cruelest reality of her life.
The morning sunlight filtered through the enormous glass windows of a suite Clara had never seen before. The first thing she felt was a splitting headache, followed by a searing ache throughout her entire body. She blinked, trying to make sense of the luxurious decor in shades of gray and black.
She was alone.
The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the distant sound of Sao Paulo's traffic. When she tried to move, Clara realized she was completely naked beneath sheets of silk. Panic crawled up her spine like a bucket of ice water. As she pulled the fabric aside to stand, her eyes locked onto a small, unmistakable reddish stain on the white fabric.
The air left her lungs. Despair hit her like a punch to the stomach. She had given herself to a stranger. Her integrity — her purity, guarded her entire life — had been lost in a single night she could barely remember, to a man whose face she couldn't even recall.
Hot tears began streaming down her cheeks. Sitting on the bed, trembling, hugging her own knees, she looked at the nightstand beside her. There, gleaming under the morning light, lay a thick wad of hundred-real bills. On top of the money, a torn piece of paper bore a firm, elegant handwriting.
Clara reached out with a shaking hand and read the single sentence written there:
"I hope this is enough."
The note slipped from her fingers. Clara covered her mouth to muffle the scream of agony rising from her throat. She wasn't an escort. She wasn't that kind of woman. The humiliation burned deeper than the aphrodisiac from the night before. In that mysterious man's mind, she had been nothing but a piece of meat to be bought — a disposable toy for one night.
Curled up in the vastness of that luxurious bed, Clara wept. Feeling like the lowest piece of garbage in the world, she gathered her torn clothes from the floor — never knowing that the man who had left that note was the same one who commanded the company where she would soon seek her future.
