Cesar
I hate nightlife. I hate the deafening noise, the bass that makes your chest vibrate in the most irritating way, the stench of sweat mingled with overpriced drinks, and the assault of those flashing lights that seem designed to blind anyone with an ounce of sanity.
To me, places like that nightclub in Vila Olimpia were nothing more than temples of human vanity, where hollow people tried to fill their mediocre lives with fleeting pleasures. If it were up to me, I would have been in the quiet of my penthouse, reviewing the Montenegro Group's financial reports.
But I was there for one reason only: business.
The foreign investor I'd been trying to close a multimillion-dollar partnership with for the past three weeks was an eccentric, demanding man. He refused to sign the contract in a formal office; he wanted to "feel the energy of Sao Paulo's nightlife."
Pathetic. I swallowed my pride and my irritation, put on a custom-fitted black linen shirt, and went to meet him in the VIP lounge. It was two hours of pure psychological torture, enduring small talk and fake smiles while I maintained my usual icy composure.
Fortunately, my cold, calculated persistence won out. The man finally put his signature on the document. I tucked the contract into my executive briefcase and took my first real breath of the night. My quota for human interaction had been thoroughly exceeded. I couldn't wait to leave.
Before taking the private elevator to the parking garage, I decided to stop by the restroom in the VIP corridor to wash my hands and straighten my collar. My mind was already working on the next day's meeting, mapping out the Montenegro empire's next moves.
But fate -- that cursed force I never believed in -- decided to cross my path.
The moment I approached the restroom entrance, the door swung open, and I came face to face with her.
The world seemed to slow down. The electronic music thumping in the background vanished. I'd seen thousands of women in my life -- models, actresses, high-society heiresses -- but never, in all my years, had I ever seen anyone so breathtakingly beautiful.
She wasn't wearing extravagant jewelry or heavy makeup. Her beauty was raw, magnetic, and devastating. I simply couldn't stop looking at her.
I stood frozen, mesmerized by those brown eyes that seemed to be begging for something I couldn't decipher.
And then her scent hit me. It wasn't some strong, vulgar French perfume like the other women in that club wore. It was a sweet, delicate fragrance -- something that reminded me of fresh flowers and a disturbing innocence.
That scent flooded my lungs, crawled up my spine, and began to unravel me completely. My self-control -- my greatest virtue -- started slipping through my fingers.
"Help me... please..."
Her voice came out as a whisper, barely audible.
Before I could process her words, her legs gave out. She fainted, collapsing toward the floor.
Driven by a purely primal, protective instinct I didn't even know I possessed, I reached out and caught her before she hit the ground. The second my hands touched her skin, a jolt tore through my body. Every hair on my arms stood on end -- a burning sensation that seemed to set my veins on fire. My heart slammed violently against my ribs. Never, not even in my younger days, had I felt anything like that for anyone.
It was a physical, instantaneous connection that terrified me.
I adjusted her in my arms, scooping her up without a second thought.
She was light, delicate, as if she were made of porcelain. I ignored the stares from the handful of security guards and strode toward my car in the basement garage. When I settled her into the passenger seat of my armored sedan, I realized something was very wrong. The girl wasn't simply drunk. She looked at me with eyes clouded by a haze of raw desire, biting her lips with a burning need, writhing in the seat, panting heavily. Her skin was on fire -- she was burning with desire, clearly under the effect of some powerful stimulant.
I should have taken her to a hospital. That would have been the rational thing to do. But her scent inside the enclosed space of the car was driving me insane, obliterating every last trace of logic from my mind. I started the engine and drove through the streets of Sao Paulo at high speed. I never brought anyone to my home. My residence was my untouchable sanctuary. So I headed straight for the five-star hotel where I kept a presidential suite reserved exclusively for my personal use, paid annually to guarantee my complete privacy.
We went up via the private elevator. The moment the room door closed behind us, chaos took over.
Everything happened too fast. The cold, calculating, strategic Cesar Montenegro evaporated, replaced by a man consumed by insatiable hunger. I completely lost control. When I undressed her, I saw that she was perfect -- every curve, every line of her skin seemed to have been sculpted to fit my hands. The more I touched her, the more I wanted her. It was an instant addiction, a primal urgency that consumed me entirely.
Not even Melissa -- the fiancee I once believed I loved -- had ever come close to putting me in that state of trance and raw intensity.
The girl was insatiable, crying out for my touch, driven by the heat of whatever substance coursed through her blood.
And I surrendered to that madness without thinking about tomorrow.
Yet when I finally joined her in complete surrender, I felt a physical resistance that made me freeze for a split second. Something was wrong. But the urgency of the moment, her whispers, and the heat of her body dragged me back into the abyss. I kept going, unable to stop the runaway train my desire had become.
It was only when it was all over -- when the adrenaline finally began to ebb and the fog of lust cleared -- that reality struck me.
I pulled away from her and looked at the pale satin sheet. There was a large bloodstain, vivid and accusing.
My heart raced. The air vanished from my lungs. For the first time in my adult life, I didn't know what to do.
I was completely paralyzed, staring at that stain and then at the young woman who now lay in a deep, exhausted sleep beside me. She was a virgin.
I had taken the innocence of a girl who clearly had no idea what she was doing -- who had been under the influence of some drug.
A new feeling began to bloom in my chest. Looking at her serene face against the pillow, I felt an overwhelming urge to lie back down. I wanted to stay. I wanted to pull her into my arms, shield her from the world, fall asleep feeling the warmth of her body, and wake up the next morning kissing her brown hair.
But the panic of vulnerability won out. I had never done that. I was Cesar Montenegro. I had sworn to myself, standing before a mirror years ago, that I would never give my heart or my feelings to anyone again. To feel this way about a stranger was dangerous.
It was a weakness I couldn't afford.
So I fell back on the only defense mechanism I knew. I got out of bed, every muscle in my body protesting. I walked over to my wallet, took out a generous amount of cash, placed it on the nightstand, picked up a pen and a piece of hotel stationery, and wrote, with slightly trembling hands:
"I hope this is enough."
