The morning light barely pierced the dense, foggy canopy of the vampire realm, but the citadel was already buzzing. Word of the "Mortal Witch who tames lightning and commands a floating silver familiar" had spread through the province like wildfire. By noon, a grand, gothic carriage drawn by four skeletal, demonic horses pulled up to the courtyard gates.
An emissary—an incredibly posh-looking vampire wearing a powdered wig and a velvet coat—stepped out, holding a scroll sealed with blood-red wax.
"Lady Maya," Eleanor said, knocking softly before entering Maya’s guest room. She looked incredibly tense, her eyes darting to Mochi, who was hovering silently near the bed. "The Lord Protector of the Crimson Province, Lord Valerius, has formally summoned you to the High Court. You... you must come. One does not defy the Elder of the Blood."
"Is there going to be food there? Actual food, not raw meat or whatever you guys live on?" Maya asked, currently using her neural link to have Mochi calibrate a small, handheld scanning device.
*‘Scan the room for any hidden listening devices,’* she thought. Mochi immediately pulsed a faint, invisible sonar wave through the stone walls, sending a green "Clear" signal directly into Maya’s mind.
"He is more likely to drain you if you disrespect him," Julian muttered, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed. His cheek was fully healed from the previous night, but his pride was still severely bruised. "He is three hundred years old. His dark magic is absolute. You and your little glowing toy won't stand a chance if he decides you are a threat."
Maya stood up, adjusting her jacket, and gave Julian a flat look. "Yeah, well, I've dealt with screaming tech executives who think they're gods, too. Lead the way, drama club."
The carriage ride through the deep forest was bumpy and silent. Julian spent the entire time staring out the window, brooding, completely unaware that the very Shadow-wolf leader he had stabbed last night was currently recovering in a high-tech survival bunker Maya had built right under his nose.
Suddenly, the carriage jerked to a violent halt. The skeletal horses shrieked.
"What now?" Maya groaned.
Before Julian could answer, Maya’s mind sparked with an alert from Mochi. *[Warning: Four hostile vampire anomalies detected in the canopy above. Initializing threat assessment.]*
"An ambush?" Julian gasped, his hand flying to the hilt of his sword as the roof of the carriage began to splinter under heavy claws. "Rogue factions! They must have heard about your weapon!"
"Sit back, fang boy," Maya said calmly.
*‘Mochi, deploy a geometric kinetic barrier. Maximum density, non-lethal shock feedback,’* she commanded silently.
Instantly, a bright blue, honeycomb-patterned force field snapped into existence, wrapping perfectly around Maya and Julian. A split second later, two rogue vampires crashed through the wooden roof, claws extended—only to smash face-first into the incredibly rigid energy barrier.
*THUD!*
The impact sounded like a bird hitting a glass window. Before the dazed rogues could recover, a small taser-probe extended from Mochi's side. With a quick *zap-zap*, a localized electrical current pulsed through the barrier, knocking the attackers out cold. They tumbled off the side of the moving carriage into the dirt.
Julian stared at the empty space where the assassins had just been, then looked at the glowing blue hexagons fading from view. He slowly turned his eyes to Maya, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You didn't even speak. You didn't wave a wand or utter an incantation. How are you controlling that artifact?"
Maya gave him a small, mysterious smirk. "Let's just say my tech support is highly responsive."
