The Man Behind the Monster Part Two

The silence after Isabella's words felt heavier than any accusation.

Elara looked between the siblings, confused.

"Your mother?"

Isabella's expression softened slightly.

"Yes."

She stepped closer, studying Elara carefully.

"You have her eyes."

Elara had heard that sentence many times in her life.

Relatives.

Old neighbors.

People who had known her mother.

But hearing it inside Blackwood Manor felt different.

Like a missing piece of her life had suddenly appeared.

"How did you know my mother?"

Isabella looked at Damien.

For a moment, it seemed like she was asking permission.

That alone told Elara something.

The Voss family had secrets.

Too many.

Finally, Isabella spoke.

"Because before everything happened, Evelyn Ashford was like family to us."

Damien looked away.

He remembered.

He remembered his mother laughing with Evelyn in the garden.

He remembered Elara's mother bringing him books when he was younger.

He remembered a time before fear.

Before loss.

"What happened between our families?" Elara asked.

Isabella's expression changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

"Something that was never supposed to happen."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

Isabella looked at her.

"But it is the truth."

---

Later that evening, the three of them sat in the library.

The same room where the past had begun revealing itself.

Isabella placed an old journal on the table.

"This belonged to my mother."

Damien stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"I took it before the house was destroyed."

His eyes narrowed.

"You had it all these years?"

Isabella looked hurt.

"I was trying to protect it."

"From who?"

She didn't answer.

And that answer said enough.

Elara opened the journal carefully.

The pages were filled with handwriting.

Some were normal entries.

Others were warnings.

Names.

Dates.

Symbols.

Then she found something.

A drawing.

The broken circle.

Her fingers froze.

"The symbol."

Damien leaned closer.

"What?"

"It's here."

Isabella went quiet.

"That symbol was connected to The Circle."

Elara looked up.

"You know about them?"

Isabella nodded.

"They were not just criminals. They were people with influence. Politicians. Business owners. People everyone trusted."

"Why were my mother and your mother involved?"

Isabella looked at Damien.

"Because they discovered what The Circle was hiding."

---

Across the city, Marcus stood inside a private room.

A man sat across from him.

Alistair Crowe.

One of the most powerful figures in Blackridge.

"You allowed them to find the journal."

Marcus remained calm.

"It was necessary."

Alistair frowned.

"You are becoming careless."

"No."

Marcus looked toward the window.

"I am finishing what was started twenty-five years ago."

"Damien trusts you."

A faint smile appeared on Marcus's face.

"That is why it works."

"And the girl?"

"She is exactly where we need her."

Alistair leaned back.

"Do you think Damien will choose the truth over revenge?"

Marcus looked at him.

"I think Elara Ashford will change him."

"And if she doesn't?"

The smile disappeared.

"Then both families will finally pay for their mistakes."

---

Back at Blackwood Manor, Elara continued reading the journal.

One entry caught her attention.

If they find the evidence, they will destroy everything. The painting is the only thing they cannot erase.

She looked at Damien.

"The painting."

He understood immediately.

"The one my mother hid."

Elara nodded.

"But what painting?"

Before anyone could answer, the library door opened.

Lydia stood there, holding an old package.

"Miss Ashford."

Everyone turned.

"This arrived for you."

Elara frowned.

"From who?"

Lydia looked nervous.

"There was no name."

The package was small.

Old.

Wrapped in faded cloth.

Elara slowly opened it.

Inside was a paintbrush.

Her mother's paintbrush.

She knew it instantly.

But that wasn't all.

There was a note attached.

Her mother's handwriting.

For my daughter.

When you find the monster, you will find the truth.

Elara's breath stopped.

Everyone looked at Damien.

Because the message was clear.

Her mother knew Damien Voss would become the man the world feared.

And somehow...

She knew Elara would find him.

Damien stared at the note.

For the first time in years, he felt something he hated.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Elara.

Because someone had planned this long before either of them knew.

And now they were both standing exactly where they were meant to be.
