Episode 1: The Boy Beside the Window

The first day of eleventh grade arrived with the scent of rain and freshly polished classroom floors. Students drifted through the halls in noisy groups, laughing about summer vacations and comparing schedules. Among them walked Ayan Malik, clutching the strap of his backpack tightly enough to turn his knuckles white.

He preferred books to crowds and silence to attention. A new school meant new faces, and that alone made his stomach twist.

He quietly stepped into Class 11-B and chose the desk by the window. Outside, gray clouds rolled across the sky, promising another afternoon storm.

"Mind if I sit here?"

Ayan looked up.

Standing beside him was a tall boy with untidy black hair and warm brown eyes that seemed to smile before his lips did.

"I'm Zayan Shah," he said. "Looks like every other seat is taken."

Ayan nodded awkwardly.

"I'm... Ayan."

Before they could say anything else, the teacher entered.

"Good morning, everyone. Welcome to a new year."

The introductions passed quickly. By lunchtime, everyone had already found old friends or formed new groups.

Everyone except Ayan.

He slipped away to the quiet rooftop with a sandwich and a novel, grateful for the peace.

A few minutes later, the rooftop door opened again.

"Oh," the familiar voice said. "So this is where you've been hiding."

It was Zayan.

"I wasn't hiding," Ayan replied softly.

"Then what do you call eating lunch alone on the roof?"

Ayan shrugged.

"I like quiet."

Zayan smiled instead of teasing him.

"I get that."

For a while, neither of them spoke. They simply watched the clouds drift overhead.

"You know," Zayan finally said, "people think I'm good at making friends because I talk a lot."

"Aren't you?"

"Maybe."

He looked toward the school grounds below.

"But talking isn't the same as being understood."

The words surprised Ayan.

For the first time, he wondered if the smiling boy beside him carried worries of his own.

Over the following weeks, they fell into an easy routine.

Zayan waited for Ayan outside class every morning.

Ayan helped him solve calculus problems after school.

One afternoon, while walking home, rain suddenly poured from the sky.

Neither of them had an umbrella.

They laughed as they ran toward a small bus stop, soaked within seconds.

Breathing hard, Zayan looked over and laughed again.

"You know..."

"What?"

"I think you're smiling more than when we first met."

Ayan blinked.

Was he?

He hadn't noticed.

Maybe it was because life felt a little less lonely now.

As the rain slowed, they stood shoulder to shoulder, watching water ripple across the empty street.

Neither realized that this quiet friendship was becoming something precious—something neither of them yet had the words to describe.
