The Regional Science Innovation Fair finally arrived.
By seven in the morning, Al Noor High School was already alive with excitement. Students hurried across the campus carrying models, laptops, posters, and carefully wrapped projects. Teachers checked attendance while volunteers directed visitors toward the exhibition hall.
Ayan stood in front of their display, carefully smoothing the edges of their presentation board for what felt like the hundredth time.
His hands trembled.
"You've straightened that corner five times already."
Zayan's amused voice pulled him from his thoughts.
"I don't want it to look messy."
"It doesn't."
"What if something goes wrong?"
Zayan placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Then we'll deal with it together."
Ayan looked at him and smiled.
"...Together."
It was enough to calm him.
The exhibition hall filled with judges, teachers, parents, and students from other schools. Conversations echoed around the room as each team prepared to present.
When their turn finally came, Ayan froze.
The three judges stood in front of them with notebooks in hand.
One of them smiled kindly.
"You may begin."
Ayan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
His heart pounded so loudly that he could barely hear anything else.
He hated speaking in front of crowds.
For a brief second, panic washed over him.
Then he felt someone gently brush against his elbow.
It was Zayan.
Without looking directly at him, Zayan whispered just loudly enough for Ayan to hear.
"You know this better than anyone."
"Just explain it to me."
The words were simple.
But somehow, they worked.
Instead of imagining three judges staring at him, Ayan imagined he was once again sitting in the science lab, explaining the project to Zayan.
He took a deep breath.
"Our project focuses on creating an affordable water filtration system using locally available materials..."
As he continued speaking, his nervousness slowly disappeared.
The judges listened carefully, asking thoughtful questions.
Whenever Ayan hesitated, Zayan smoothly continued the explanation.
Whenever Zayan forgot a technical detail, Ayan quietly filled in the gap.
They didn't interrupt each other.
They didn't compete.
They worked like two halves of the same conversation.
When the presentation ended, one of the judges smiled.
"You two make an excellent team."
Another added, "It's rare to see such natural cooperation."
Ayan and Zayan exchanged a quick glance.
Neither said anything.
Neither needed to.
After all the presentations were complete, everyone gathered in the school auditorium for the results.
The atmosphere was tense.
Students whispered nervously while teachers organized certificates on the stage.
Ayan sat quietly, staring at his hands.
Beside him, Zayan looked surprisingly relaxed.
"You're not nervous?"
"I am."
"You don't look it."
"I'm pretending."
That made Ayan laugh.
The principal stepped onto the stage.
"Thank you to every participant. Your creativity and hard work have made us proud."
Applause echoed through the auditorium.
"Now..."
He opened an envelope.
"The Third Prize goes to..."
Cheers erupted as another school's name was announced.
"The Second Prize goes to..."
More applause.
Ayan lowered his gaze.
Maybe they hadn't won.
He felt a light nudge from Zayan.
"Look up."
"The First Prize..."
The principal paused dramatically.
"...goes to the Water Purification Project by Ayan Malik and Zayan Shah from Al Noor High School!"
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then the auditorium exploded into applause.
"We won?" Zayan whispered.
Ayan blinked several times.
"I think..."
His voice cracked with disbelief.
"I think we did."
Before Ayan realized what was happening, Zayan wrapped him in a quick, joyful hug.
"We did it!"
The hug lasted only a second.
Just long enough for both of them to notice how fast the other's heart was beating.
They stepped back almost immediately.
Ayan's cheeks turned pink.
"So..."
Zayan rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
"We won."
"We did."
Both of them smiled so widely that neither could stop.
That evening, the school organized a small celebration in the courtyard.
Strings of warm lights hung from the trees.
Students laughed, music played softly, and tables were filled with food.
As night settled over the campus, fireworks were prepared for the closing ceremony.
Ayan wandered toward the edge of the field, away from the crowd.
A few minutes later, footsteps approached.
"I knew I'd find you here."
Zayan handed him a paper cup of hot chocolate.
"You always disappear when things get noisy."
"I like watching from here."
"So do I."
They stood side by side in comfortable silence.
The first firework shot into the sky.
A brilliant burst of gold lit up the darkness.
More followed, filling the night with colors that reflected in everyone's eyes.
"They're beautiful," Ayan whispered.
"They are."
But Zayan wasn't looking at the fireworks.
He was looking at Ayan.
The colorful lights danced across Ayan's face as he watched the sky with quiet wonder.
For a brief moment, Zayan forgot to breathe.
Why can't I look away?
At the same time, Ayan turned his head.
Their eyes met.
Neither spoke.
The fireworks seemed distant.
The laughter around them faded.
For one long heartbeat, it felt as though they were the only two people in the world.
Ayan was the first to look away.
His face felt warm.
"You're staring."
"I..."
Zayan laughed nervously.
"Sorry."
"It's okay."
Neither understood why the silence suddenly felt different.
Not awkward.
Just... full.
Full of words they didn't know how to say.
As the final firework bloomed across the sky, Zayan quietly spoke.
"You remember the promise we made?"
Ayan nodded.
"To get through high school together."
"No matter what happens."
Ayan smiled.
"I remember."
Zayan held out his little finger with a sheepish grin.
"Let's make another promise."
Ayan looked at it curiously before hooking his own little finger around Zayan's.
"What kind?"
"No matter where life takes us..."
Zayan's smile softened.
"...don't disappear from my life."
Ayan looked at their linked fingers.
His chest tightened with an emotion he couldn't explain.
"I won't."
He met Zayan's eyes.
"I promise."
Above them, the final firework blossomed into a thousand shimmering lights before fading into the night.
Neither boy realized that the promise they had just made would one day be tested in ways they could never imagine.
And neither of them yet understood that what they felt for each other was quietly growing into something much deeper than friendship. It was still unspoken, still unnamed—but with every shared laugh, every moment of worry, and every promise, love was finding its place in their hearts.
