The Hale Mansion

Chapter 2: The Hale Mansion

The underground tunnel stretched for nearly a mile before Lucas stopped beside a hidden steel door. He entered a code, and the door slid open, revealing a private garage beneath the Hale Mansion.

Elena stepped inside cautiously, her eyes darting from the luxury cars to the marble staircase ahead.

"So this is where you've brought me," she said coldly. "A bigger prison."

Aron sighed. "Seriously? We just risked getting shot to save you."

"I didn't ask to be saved."

"You would've been left with those criminals!"

"And now I'm here with strangers."

Lucas removed his gloves and looked at her calmly.

"No one will force you to stay. But until The Circle is dealt with, leaving would put your life in danger."

"I don't believe you."

"I expected that."

Lucas walked upstairs without another word.

Aron watched his father disappear before turning back to Elena.

"You know, he's terrible at explaining things."

She folded her arms.

"And you're better?"

"I try to be."

He gave a small smile.

"My name's Aron. I know tonight looked bad, but we weren't there to buy anyone."

"Then why bid fifty million dollars?"

"Because everyone else in that room wanted something from you. We wanted to make sure they didn't get it."

Elena studied his face, searching for a lie.

Instead, she saw only exhaustion.

A housekeeper approached with a warm blanket and a tray of food.

"You should eat," Aron said.

"I'm not hungry."

"You've probably been through enough already."

She looked away.

"I don't need your pity."

"It's not pity," Aron replied quietly. "It's basic human decency."

For the first time, Elena didn't answer.

Later that evening, Aron knocked on the guest room door.

"Can I come in?"

Silence.

"I'll take that as a maybe."

He opened the door just enough to place a first-aid kit on the table.

"You've got a cut on your hand."

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

She glanced at the injury before reluctantly sitting down.

Aron handed her a bandage.

"I was never good at this," he admitted. "Dad usually handles the serious stuff."

"You seem afraid of him."

Aron laughed.

"Afraid? No."

He paused.

"Annoyed? Every day."

That unexpected answer almost made Elena smile.

Almost.

Downstairs, Lucas stood in his office, studying security footage from the auction.

His phone rang.

"Sir," his head of security reported. "The Circle knows Elena escaped."

Lucas's expression darkened.

"Increase security."

"They've already sent people to search for her."

"I expected as much."

He ended the call and looked out the window toward the mansion grounds.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Upstairs, Aron leaned against the doorway.

"You know," he said with a grin, "this mansion has a movie room, a library, an indoor pool, and probably enough bedrooms to get lost in."

Elena looked at him suspiciously.

"Why are you telling me that?"

"So you'll stop thinking you're trapped."

"And if I try to leave?"

"I won't stop you," Aron replied honestly. "But I'd rather you stayed alive."

For the first time since the auction, Elena wondered if the Hales were telling the truth.

Outside the mansion gates, a black SUV came to a stop.

Several masked figures stepped out into the darkness.

One of them looked toward the brightly lit estate.

"She's inside," he said.

"Bring her back... alive."
