Chapter 3: Silent Battles

Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the Hale Mansion. Elena woke slowly, startled by the unfamiliar room. For a moment, she thought the auction had been a nightmare. Then reality returned.

She was still in the mansion.

After getting dressed, she cautiously stepped into the hallway. The mansion was quiet until she heard laughter coming from the dining room.

Aron looked up first.

"Good morning," he said with a smile. "You actually slept."

"I didn't come here for breakfast."

"I know. But you should still eat."

Lucas sat at the other end of the table, reading the morning newspaper without looking up.

"There are cameras outside the estate," he said calmly. "The Circle has already begun searching."

Elena frowned.

"So I really can't leave."

"You can," Lucas replied. "But I won't lie to you. They will find you before sunset."

She looked away without answering.

After breakfast, Aron found Elena standing alone in the mansion's enormous library.

"I didn't know rich people actually read books," she remarked.

Aron laughed.

"Dad does. I mostly pretend."

She glanced at him.

"You're different when he's not around."

"What does that mean?"

"You joke."

"He doesn't."

Before she could respond, Lucas entered the library.

"We're leaving."

Elena crossed her arms.

"Where?"

"Somewhere safer."

"I said I'm not going anywhere with you."

Lucas met her gaze.

"You don't trust me."

"No."

"I understand."

Aron stepped between them.

"Dad, maybe forcing the conversation isn't helping."

Lucas sighed quietly.

"I'm not forcing anything."

"It kind of sounds like you are."

For a brief moment, father and son stared at each other in silence.

Finally, Lucas walked away.

Aron rubbed the back of his neck.

"See? We argue all the time."

"You challenge him."

"Someone has to."

That afternoon, the mansion's security alarms suddenly sounded.

A guard rushed into the hall.

"Mr. Hale! Motion sensors detected three intruders near the east wall."

Lucas immediately stood.

"Lock down the mansion."

Aron turned to Elena.

"Stay here."

"I'm not hiding."

"You don't understand how dangerous these people are."

"And you do?"

"I saw enough last night."

The lights outside flickered as security teams moved across the estate.

Lucas checked the surveillance monitors.

"They're testing our defenses," he said.

"They'll come back with more people."

Minutes later, the intruders disappeared before anyone could catch them.

The attack lasted less than five minutes, but it left the mansion on high alert.

That evening, Elena stood alone on the balcony.

Aron joined her with two cups of hot chocolate.

"I wasn't sure if you liked coffee."

She accepted the cup after a moment.

"Thank you."

Aron smiled.

"I'll count that as progress."

Elena looked toward the dark forest surrounding the estate.

"Do you really think they'll keep coming?"

"They won't stop," Aron admitted.

"Then why are you helping me?"

He looked at the night sky before answering.

"Because nobody deserves to live in fear."

For the first time since arriving, Elena saw genuine sincerity in his eyes.

Far beyond the mansion gates, a black SUV waited in the shadows.

A masked man lowered his binoculars.

"So the billionaire's son is getting close to the girl."

His partner smiled coldly.

"Good."

"The closer they become..."

"The more it will hurt when we take her back."
