The Devil's Promise
Chapter 1 – A Stranger in the Rain
The rain had been falling over Seoul since late afternoon.
By the time Arya Nair stepped out of the café where she worked part-time, the city was covered in a silver haze. Neon lights reflected on the wet roads, turning every puddle into a colorful mirror. People hurried past with umbrellas, eager to get home before the rain became heavier.
Arya pulled her jacket closer and adjusted the strap of her backpack.
"Good night, Arya! Don't catch a cold," her manager called from the café entrance.
She smiled and waved.
"Good night!"
It had been almost a year since she came to South Korea from Kerala to continue her studies. At first, everything had felt unfamiliar—the language, the food, the weather, even the silence of the city at night. But little by little, Seoul had started to feel like a second home.
Life wasn't easy.
She attended college during the day and worked at the café in the evenings to pay part of her expenses. Some days were exhausting, but she never complained. She believed every sacrifice would be worth it someday.
As she walked toward the nearest bus stop, a cold breeze brushed against her face.
"Looks like the rain isn't stopping anytime soon," she whispered to herself.
She checked the time on her phone.
10:18 PM.
"If I miss the next bus, I'll have to wait another twenty minutes."
She quickened her pace.
The main road was crowded, so she decided to take a narrow shortcut she used occasionally. It wasn't dangerous, just quieter than the busy streets.
The sound of rain echoed between the buildings.
Her footsteps slowed.
Something felt... different.
A few meters ahead, beneath the dim glow of a streetlight, someone was standing against a brick wall.
No.
Not standing.
Leaning.
The man remained completely still as the rain soaked his black suit. His head was lowered, hiding most of his face.
Arya stopped walking.
For a brief moment, she considered turning around.
She didn't know who he was.
Maybe he was drunk.
Maybe he simply wanted to be left alone.
She took another step.
"Excuse me..."
There was no response.
The rain continued to fall between them.
"Are you okay?" she asked, a little louder.
Slowly, the man lifted his head.
Arya froze.
His face was strikingly handsome, yet there was something unsettling about him.
His sharp eyes were cold.
Not angry.
Not frightened.
Just... emotionless.
They met her eyes for only a second before he looked away.
"You should leave."
His voice was calm and deep.
Arya blinked.
"You don't look well."
"I'm fine."
"You don't sound fine."
For the first time, he looked directly at her again.
Most people would have walked away after hearing that tone.
Arya didn't.
She had always found it difficult to ignore someone who seemed to need help.
"You've been standing here in the rain for who knows how long," she said softly. "You'll get sick."
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
It wasn't warm.
It almost looked as if he had forgotten how to smile.
"You worry too much."
"My mother says the same thing."
He looked at her for another moment, studying her face as if trying to understand why a complete stranger would stop for him.
"You don't even know me."
"I know."
"Then why are you still here?"
Arya thought for a second before answering honestly.
"Because if I walk away and something happens to you... I'll regret it."
The stranger lowered his gaze.
No one had spoken to him like that in a very long time.
The rain grew heavier.
Arya opened her umbrella a little wider.
"At least stand under this."
"I don't need it."
"You really are stubborn."
Another small smile appeared on his face.
"So I've been told."
For a brief moment, the atmosphere between them became unexpectedly peaceful.
Then...
The sound of tires echoed from the other end of the street.
A black luxury car slowly entered the alley.
The stranger's expression changed instantly.
The warmth disappeared from his eyes.
He became cold once again.
Several men in black suits stepped out of the car.
Arya instinctively looked at them before turning back to the stranger.
They stopped a respectful distance away.
One of them bowed slightly.
"Sir."
Sir?
Arya looked at the stranger in confusion.
The men didn't dare come any closer until he gave a small nod.
Only then did they move.
The stranger looked at Arya one last time.
"Forget you ever saw me."
"What?"
"You'll be safer that way."
Before she could ask another question, he walked toward the waiting car.
None of the men spoke to him unless he spoke first.
None of them even looked directly into his eyes.
The car door closed.
Within seconds, the vehicle disappeared into the rain.
Arya stood alone beneath her umbrella, trying to understand what had just happened.
"Who was he?"
She had never seen someone surrounded by such silence.
Not fear.
Not respect.
Something in between.
The bus ride home felt unusually quiet.
Even after reaching her small apartment, she couldn't stop thinking about the stranger.
She made herself a cup of instant ramen, opened one of her textbooks, and tried to study.
It didn't work.
Every few minutes, her thoughts wandered back to the man in the rain.
His cold eyes.
His tired expression.
And the strange sadness hidden behind them.
She sighed.
"I'll probably never see him again."
Outside, the rain finally began to slow.
Far away, in the back seat of the black car, the stranger sat with his eyes closed.
One of his bodyguards spoke carefully.
"Boss... should we investigate the girl?"
Silence.
A few seconds later, the man opened his eyes.
"No."
"But she saw your face."
"I know."
"Then why let her go?"
He looked out the rain-covered window.
"For the first time..."
His voice was almost a whisper.
"Someone looked at me without fear."
The car disappeared into the lights of Seoul.
Neither of them knew it yet.
That rainy night wasn't the end of their story.
It was only the beginning.
