Chapter 2

The next morning, the rain had stopped, leaving Seoul sparkling beneath the soft autumn sun.

Arya sat by the classroom window, but her thoughts were far away. Her professor's lecture on advanced macroeconomics faded into background noise. Instead of taking notes, she absentmindedly sketched a brick wall and a pair of sharp, unforgettable eyes in the corner of her notebook.

"Who even says things like that in real life?" she wondered, resting her chin on her hand.

Her mind drifted back to the mysterious man she had met in the rain. He had stood there so calmly, as if the storm around him didn't exist. There was something about him that felt unreal—quiet, distant, and impossible to understand.

Arya quickly shook her head.

"What am I even thinking?" she muttered to herself with an embarrassed smile.

Why was she thinking so much about a complete stranger? She had only met him once. Besides, this was Seoul. He was probably someone important... maybe the boyfriend of a famous actress or the son of a wealthy family.

"Stop imagining things, Arya," she told herself.

She had more important things to worry about. There was an assignment to finish, an evening shift at the café, and tomorrow she had promised to accompany her friend to a medical check-up.

When the lecture finally ended, Arya packed her books and headed straight to work.

The café was unusually busy that afternoon. Customers came in one after another, and she spent hours making coffee, serving desserts, and greeting everyone with a warm smile.

By seven in the evening, the rush had finally slowed.

Arya sat near the counter with a cup of warm barley tea.

Her manager, Min-ho, walked over with a gentle smile.

"Arya, you seem distracted today. Are you tired from studying?"

She smiled politely.

"Not really, Min-ho Oppa. I'm just thinking about my upcoming exams."

"I see. Don't work too hard."

"I'll try."

He gave her shoulder a light pat before returning to the kitchen.

Arya took out her phone and replied to a WhatsApp message from her mother in Kerala. Reading her mother's caring words instantly made her feel a little better.

Just as she slipped her phone back into her apron pocket, something outside caught her attention.

Across the street...

A black luxury sedan was parked quietly beneath the fading evening light.

Her heartbeat quickened.

It looked exactly like the car from the previous night.

Before she could think any further, the café door opened.

The gentle chime echoed through the room.

A tall man wearing a perfectly tailored grey suit walked inside. His posture was straight, and every movement was calm and professional.

He walked directly toward the counter.

His eyes stopped on Arya's name tag.

"Are you Miss Arya Nair?"

A strange feeling crept into her chest.

"Yes... I am."

The man reached into his coat pocket and placed an elegant cream-colored envelope on the counter.

"This is for you."

Arya stared at it.

"Who sent this?"

"My employer asked me to deliver it personally."

Without another word, the man gave a respectful bow and walked out.

Arya rushed to the window just in time to see him enter the back seat of the black sedan.

Moments later, the car disappeared into the evening traffic.

She looked back at the envelope resting in her hands.

Carefully, she opened it.

Inside was a thick card and a small item wrapped in soft white paper.

She unwrapped it first.

It was a beautifully carved wooden bookmark decorated with delicate plum blossom patterns.

A small smile appeared on her face.

Then she opened the card.

Written in neat English handwriting were a few simple lines.

«You told me last night that your mother worries because you care too much about strangers.

Someone with such a kind heart should not walk through dark alleys alone.

Please accept this as a small token of appreciation for your kindness.

Stay safe, Arya.

— K»

Arya read the letter again.

And again.

"K..."

That single letter was the only clue he had left behind.

He remembered what she had said.

He knew her name.

He even knew where she worked.

A mixture of curiosity and uneasiness filled her heart.

Who was he?

How had he found her so easily?

And why did he care whether she was safe?

When her shift ended, Arya decided to avoid the shortcut completely.

Instead, she walked along the brightest and busiest streets before catching her bus home.

By the time she reached her small rooftop apartment, she was exhausted.

To relax, she made herself a hot cup of ginger-cardamom tea—the taste that always reminded her of home.

She sat beside the window, watching the glowing lights of Seoul.

In her hand was the wooden bookmark.

It carried the faint scent of cedarwood, mixed with the memory of last night's rain.

She traced the carved flowers with her fingertips.

"Who are you... K?" she whispered softly.

Deep inside, she knew she should forget everything and move on.

She was only an international student with simple dreams.

He belonged to a completely different world.

A world filled with expensive suits, unanswered questions, and dangerous secrets.

Taking one last sip of her tea, Arya looked out at the city lights.

Tomorrow, she would accompany her friend to a medical check-up.

She hoped it would be an ordinary day.

But fate had already made a different decision.

Neither of them knew it yet...

Their paths were about to cross once again.
