The night was long.
Darkness had swallowed Vajrangar whole, draping its ancient stones in shadows so deep they seemed to breathe. The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a world washed clean—the air fresh, the stars beginning to peek through the parting clouds like scattered diamonds on velvet.
But sleep did not come easily to the royal chambers.
In the Yuvraj's quarters, Krivansh lay awake, staring at the ceiling, his hazel eyes burning with thoughts he couldn't silence. His cream silk dhoti was rumpled from hours of tossing and turning. His long black hair fanned across his pillow like spilled ink. His mind replayed the day's events on an endless loop—the rain, his sister's tears, the rejection, those honey-brown eyes looking at Varnashi with such gentle regret.
"Why?" he whispered to the darkness. "Why did you reject her?"
But the darkness gave no answer.
---
In the Senapati's quarters, Dhurvavindra Dev sat on the edge of his bed, his broad shoulders hunched, his silver-streaked hair still damp from a cold bath he had taken to clear his mind. His honey-brown eyes were fixed on the flickering flame of a single oil lamp.
He thought about Varnashi's tears.
He thought about the way she had looked at him—so hopeful, so fragile, so full of love.
And then—against his will—his mind drifted to someone else.
To hazel eyes that burned with fire.
To a sharp tongue that cut like a blade.
To a voice that screamed, "If I wasn't born, that rat would have taken my PLACE?!"
Dhurvavindra closed his eyes.
"Why can't I stop thinking about him?" he murmured to himself. "Why does his hatred... affect me so deeply?"
He didn't have an answer.
And that terrified him more than any battle ever could.
---
But in the Maharaj's chambers, the atmosphere was entirely different.
Soft lamplight bathed the room in a warm, golden glow. The heavy silk curtains were drawn back, allowing the cool night breeze to drift in through the open balcony doors. The scent of wet earth and night-blooming jasmine filled the air.
Maharaj Karnaveer Vaajra stood on the balcony, his broad back to the room, his hands gripping the stone railing. Even in the dim light, he was a striking figure—tall, broad-shouldered, his dark brown eyes fixed on the distant horizon as if searching for answers the stars refused to give.
His beard was thick, streaked with silver, neatly trimmed. His moustache curved with regal dignity. His face, weathered by years of ruling, still held the handsomeness of a man who had once been the most sought-after prince in all the kingdoms. Now, at fifty-eight, he was still magnificent—a lion in winter, majestic and powerful.
But tonight, his brow was furrowed.
His jaw was tight.
His heart was heavy.
---
From behind him, soft footsteps padded across the marble floor.
Then—warm arms wrapped around his waist.
A delicate chin rested on his broad shoulder.
Maharani Vinakshi Vaajra—the divine beauty who had captured Karnaveer's heart decades ago and never let it go. Her hazel eyes sparkled with wisdom and love, the same shade as her son's, but softer, warmer, filled with a lifetime of understanding.
Her long black hair, now streaked with silver, cascaded down her back in silken waves. Her face was ageless—serene, graceful, the perfect example of divine beauty. Even at fifty-two, she was breathtaking. The kind of woman who made poets weep and kings kneel.
And she was his.
"Maharaj..." Her voice was like honey, like silk, like a lullaby that had soothed his soul for over three decades. "You look... tensed. Is something going on in your mind?"
Karnaveer sighed—a deep, weary sound that seemed to come from the very depths of his soul.
He turned in her embrace, his large hands coming up to rest on her hips, pulling her closer. His dark brown eyes met her hazel ones, and for a moment, the weight of the world seemed to lift from his shoulders.
"My beloved..." His voice was low, rough with emotion. "I don't understand. My heir... my own son... how can he be this cruel?"
Vinakshi's brow furrowed with concern. She reached up, her delicate fingers brushing through his silver-streaked beard.
"What do you mean, my lord?"
"Me... as a king... I am humble. Soft. Loved by everyone. I have tried to rule with kindness, with wisdom, with patience." Karnaveer's voice cracked slightly. "But why... WHY is my son so fierce? So angry? So full of HATRED?"
Vinakshi's heart ached for her husband. She could see the pain in his eyes—the confusion of a father who didn't understand the son he had raised.
"My lord..." She cupped his face in her hands, her thumbs stroking his weathered cheeks. "He... is technically still a kid. Young. And rough."
She smiled—a soft, knowing smile that held the wisdom of a mother who had watched her children grow.
"He has your fire, Karnaveer. Your passion. Your stubbornness. He just doesn't know how to wield it yet."
Karnaveer's jaw tightened.
"Have you seen?" His voice dropped to a whisper. "Have you seen his HATRED for Dhurva?"
Vinakshi's smile faded.
"I have," she admitted quietly.
"After all..." Karnaveer pulled away, turning back to the railing, his hands gripping it once more. "Senapati is like a SON to me! I RAISED him! From a boy, a stray, a nothing—I made him into the greatest warrior this kingdom has ever seen!"
His voice rose with frustration.
"And yet—instead of acting like brothers—there is POISON between them! Venom! A hatred so deep it could destroy everything I've built!"
He slammed his fist against the railing.
"What... can I DO?!"
---
Vinakshi watched her husband with sad, knowing eyes.
She had seen the hatred between her son and the Senapati. She had seen the way Krivansh's eyes burned whenever Dhurvavindra entered a room. She had seen the way Dhurvavindra's jaw tightened whenever the Yuvraj spoke.
But she had also seen something else.
Something her husband—and her son—had not yet noticed.
She had seen the way Krivansh looked at Dhurvavindra when he thought no one was watching.
She had seen the hesitation in Dhurvavindra's honey-brown eyes whenever Krivansh walked past.
She had seen the tension that crackled between them—a tension that was not entirely hatred.
But she said nothing.
Because some truths could only be discovered by the ones who needed to discover them.
---
"My lord..."
Vinakshi stepped forward, her silk saree—a deep shade of royal blue, embroidered with gold—swishing softly against the marble floor. She draped her arms around his neck, her fingers lacing together behind his head.
Karnaveer looked down at her, his dark brown eyes softening.
"Then..." She smiled—a gentle, mischievous smile that reminded him of the young princess he had fallen in love with all those years ago. "You should probably send them to some work..."
She paused, letting the words hang in the air.
"...where they BOTH need to co-operate."
Karnaveer's brow furrowed.
"What do you mean?"
"Send them on a mission together," Vinakshi said simply. "Something dangerous. Something that requires them to trust each other. To watch each other's backs. To fight side by side."
She reached up and stroked his cheek.
"Maybe then... the poison would turn into nectar."
Karnaveer stared at her. His eyes widened with realization.
"My beloved..." He pulled her closer, his hands gripping her waist. "I think... you should be in my place. You are so wise."
He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers.
"And..." He stroked her cheeks softly, his calloused thumbs tracing the delicate curve of her cheekbones. "...so beautiful."
He smiled—a rare, genuine smile that made him look decades younger.
Vinakshi's cheeks flushed a delicate pink. She hid her face against his broad chest, her fingers curling into the fabric of his royal robes.
"Maharaj..." Her voice was muffled against his chest. "You have... gotten old. And I've gotten old too."
She pulled back slightly, tilting her head to show him the silver streaks in her long black hair.
"See? The silver streaks in my hair?"
Karnaveer chuckled—a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated through his chest.
"Silver or not..." He lifted a strand of her hair, bringing it to his lips and kissing it softly. "...they are still my favourite kind of silk, beloved."
Vinakshi's blush deepened. Her heart fluttered—just as it had thirty years ago, when he had first courted her.
"You are impossible," she whispered.
"And yet... you love me anyway." He grinned—a boyish grin that made her knees weak.
She lightly pinched his nose, shaking her head with mock disapproval.
"Enough of this nonsense," she said, though her eyes sparkled with affection. "We need to sleep. There is the court meeting tomorrow, remember?"
Karnaveer groaned dramatically, pulling her even closer.
"Can't we skip it? Just once?"
"Maharaj!" Vinakshi laughed, swatting his chest. "You are the KING! You cannot simply SKIP a court meeting!"
"I am the KING," he said, his voice dropping to a playful growl. "I can do whatever I want."
He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"But..." He sighed, pulling back. "You are right. As always."
He took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers.
"Come, my beloved. Let us rest."
Vinakshi smiled up at him—a smile full of love, full of warmth, full of a lifetime of shared memories.
"Together?"
"Always," Karnaveer murmured, leading her back into the chamber. "Always together."
The curtains fluttered in the night breeze.
The stars continued to shine.
And in the arms of her king, Maharani Vinakshi Vaajra closed her eyes and smiled.
Because she knew—she knew—that the poison between her son and the Senapati would eventually turn into nectar.
She just had to be patient.
And let fate do its work.
