Chapter 2 The Unwanted Guest
## Chapter 2:
Meram stood in the middle of Ehan's living room, her arms wrapped around herself. The apartment was breathtaking — floor-to-ceiling windows showed the entire New York skyline, marble floors gleamed under the soft lighting, and furniture that probably cost more than the entire orphanage filled every corner.
But she had never felt more alone.
She looked down at the cash Ehan had thrown on the table. Five thousand dollars. More money than she had ever seen in her life. But it meant nothing to her. It was just proof that she was nothing to him.
She whispered to herself, "I'm nothing. I've always been nothing. And I will always be nothing."
Tears streamed down her face, and she let them fall. For the first time in years, she didn't hold them back. She cried for her parents, who had died when she was just four years old. She cried for the nineteen years she had spent in that cold, loveless orphanage. She cried for the cruel hands that had touched her, the harsh words that had cut her, and the loneliness that had been her only companion.
But then she wiped her tears away.
She had survived nineteen years. She could survive a few more days. Weeks. Months. Whatever it took.
She walked to the guest room Ehan had pointed to and opened the door. The room was bigger than any room she had ever seen. A king-sized bed with white silk sheets, a walk-in closet, a private bathroom with a bathtub that looked like a swimming pool. She had never slept on a real bed before — only thin mattresses on metal frames.
She touched the silk sheets and smiled softly. "This is... beautiful."
### The Night Passes
Meram barely slept. Her mind was too full of questions. Who was this man? Why had he helped her? Why had he called her his fiancée? And why did he look at her with such coldness?
She woke up at dawn, just like she did in the orphanage. Old habits were hard to break.
Quietly, she walked to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. It was stocked with everything — fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, eggs. She had never seen so much food in one place.
She decided to cook. Cooking was something she knew how to do. It gave her purpose. It kept her busy.
She made pancakes, scrambled eggs, fresh juice, and coffee. She set the table and waited.
### Ehan Wakes Up
Ehan walked out of his bedroom at exactly 7:00 AM, his dark hair still slightly messy from sleep. He wore a simple black t-shirt and grey sweatpants — a very different look from his usual expensive suits. Even like this, he was devastatingly handsome.
But his expression was hard, cold, and annoyed.
He stopped in his tracks when he saw the table.
"What is this?" he asked, his voice flat.
Meram stood at the kitchen counter, wiping it clean. "I made breakfast," she said softly. "I didn't know what you liked, so I made a little of everything."
Ehan stared at the food, then at her. "Did I ask you to cook for me?"
Meram's face flushed. "No, I just thought—"
"Stop thinking," Ehan cut her off coldly. "I told you to stay out of my way. Stay out of my life. That means don't make me food. Don't clean my apartment. Don't do anything for me. Understand?"
Meram's hands trembled slightly, but she nodded. "I understand, Mr. Khan."
"Mr. Khan?" Ehan raised an eyebrow. "That makes me sound like I'm eighty. Call me Ehan. Or don't call me at all. I don't care."
He grabbed an apple from the fridge and walked out of the kitchen, leaving Meram standing there with her heart in pieces.
### The First Day Alone
Ehan left for work after changing into his usual expensive suit. He didn't say goodbye. He didn't even look at her.
Meram was alone in the apartment.
She walked around, exploring carefully. The apartment was huge — three bedrooms, a massive living room, a dining room, a study, and a kitchen that was bigger than the orphanage's entire ground floor.
She looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was wearing the same torn dress from yesterday. Her hair was messy, her eyes tired, her skin pale. She looked exactly what she was — an orphan. A nobody.
She looked at the cash still sitting on the table. Ehan had told her to buy clothes. Maybe that was one thing she could do without bothering him.
She found a notebook and pen and wrote a quick note:
*"Mr. Ehan, I have gone out to buy clothes as you suggested. I will be back soon. — Meram."*
She left it on the dining table and quietly left the apartment.
### Shopping Alone
The streets of Manhattan were crowded, busy, and intimidating. Meram had never been outside Brooklyn before. She had never seen so much wealth, so many expensive stores, so many people in designer clothes.
She felt like a beggar in her torn dress. People looked at her with pity, or disgust, or simply ignored her.
She found a small store and bought two simple dresses, a pair of jeans, some t-shirts, and undergarments. She didn't spend much — just enough to look decent. She used Ehan's money but felt guilty about it.
As she was walking back, she passed by a mirror in a store window and stopped.
For the first time, she truly looked at herself. She was beautiful — she had always known that. Her honey-colored eyes, her porcelain skin, her full pink lips. But beauty had never helped her. It had always brought pain. Jealousy from other girls. Unwanted attention from men.
She looked away and continued walking.
### Ehan Returns Home
Ehan came back at 8:00 PM. He expected to see Meram sitting on the sofa or hiding in her room. Instead, he found her in the kitchen again.
But this time, she wasn't cooking.
She was scrubbing the floor.
Her back was to him, and her new clothes — a simple white dress — hugged her thin frame. Her hair was tied in a loose ponytail. She was humming softly, a gentle tune he had never heard before.
He stood at the doorway, watching her.
She looked so small, so fragile, so... pure. Something in his chest tightened. He had seen this woman just yesterday, and she was already changing something inside him.
He pushed the thought away.
"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice cold.
Meram jumped and turned around. "Oh! I didn't hear you come in. I just thought... since I'm staying here, I should help. I'm used to cleaning. I like it."
"Stop," Ehan said flatly. "I have people who clean. You don't need to do anything."
Meram looked down. "I'm sorry. I just wanted to... be useful."
Something in Ehan's heart cracked — just a little.
He walked past her, grabbed a glass of water, and went to his room without another word.
### Nighttime
Late at night, Meram couldn't sleep. She walked out to the living room and sat on the sofa, staring at the city lights.
Ehan's bedroom door was slightly open. She could see him inside, sitting on his bed with a laptop. His face was illuminated by the screen, and even from a distance, she could see the tension in his jaw.
She didn't notice him looking at her.
Ehan had heard her footsteps. He had looked up and saw her sitting there, small and quiet, staring at the lights like they held all the answers to her pain.
For a moment, his heart softened.
Then he remembered who she was. An orphan. A nobody. She didn't belong in his world. She didn't belong in his life. He had his reputation, his business, his grandfather's expectations.
He looked away and closed his laptop.
But deep in his heart, he knew he couldn't stay away from her forever.
### Morning — The Cousins Visit
The next morning, Meram was in the kitchen again (despite Ehan's orders) when the doorbell rang.
She opened the door and was immediately tackled by three small figures.
"BHABHI!" Aryan yelled, clinging to her leg.
"BHABHI!" Sarah echoed, hugging her waist.
"MAMA!" Zayn shouted, his little arms around her knees.
Meram's heart melted. She knelt down and hugged them all. "Oh my goodness! What are you all doing here?"
Aryan grinned. "We came to see you! Grandfather told us to stay away, but we ran away!"
Sarah nodded. "We miss you, Bhabhi!"
Zayn looked up at her with big innocent eyes. "Mama, come play with us!"
Behind them, a tall woman stood with a tired smile. "I'm sorry for the intrusion. I'm Ehan's aunt. The children refused to stay home after you left yesterday."
Ehan appeared from his room, his face dark. "Aryan. Sarah. Zayn. What are you doing here?"
Aryan turned to him, completely unafraid. "We came to see Bhabhi! She's ours! Grandfather can't take her away!"
Ehan sighed. "You shouldn't be here."
"You shouldn't be here!" Aryan copied him, grinning.
Sarah added, "We heard you were mean to Bhabhi last night! That's not nice!"
Ehan's jaw tightened. He had no idea how to handle them. He was the most powerful man in the city, but these three children — these tiny, chaotic little monsters — were impossible to control.
Meram, seeing his frustration, smiled softly. "It's okay. They're just children. They don't mean any harm."
Ehan looked at her, and for the first time, she saw something in his eyes — gratitude.
She quickly looked away, hiding her blush.
Aryan pulled her hand. "Bhabhi, come! We brought our toys! You play with us!"
Meram let them drag her to the living room.
Ehan stood at the doorway, watching her. She laughed for the first time since he had met her — a pure, beautiful, innocent laugh. The children were jumping around her, and she was playing with them like she had known them her whole life.
His aunt touched his shoulder. "She's a beautiful girl, Ehan. And she's good with children. Don't you see?"
Ehan said nothing.
His aunt continued, "I know what your grandfather thinks. But sometimes, love finds you in the strangest ways. Don't push it away."
Ehan watched Meram play with his cousins, and for the first time in years, he felt something strange — hope.
But he crushed it immediately.
She was nothing but a guest. Just a temporary burden.
That was all.
