A Marriage Proposal

The rain continued to fall as Evelyn stared at the man sitting inside the luxurious Rolls-Royce.

Damien Brooks.

The ruthless uncle everyone feared.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

Dangerous.

"What did you just say?" Evelyn asked, unsure if she had heard him correctly.

Damien's expression remained unreadable.

"I said, get in."

She hesitated.

Every instinct told her to walk away, yet she had nowhere else to go. Her husband had betrayed her. The mansion she called home was no longer hers.

With trembling hands, she stepped into the car.

The warm air inside wrapped around her as the chauffeur silently drove away.

Damien handed her a clean towel.

"Dry yourself."

She accepted it quietly.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Damien broke the silence.

"My nephew is a fool."

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I don't want your pity."

A faint smile appeared on Damien's lips.

"I wasn't offering pity."

He reached into a leather folder and placed several photographs on the seat between them.

Evelyn picked them up.

Her heart stopped.

Every picture showed Adrian and Vanessa together—holding hands, kissing, traveling abroad.

Some had been taken more than two years ago.

"They've been together..." she whispered.

"For almost your entire marriage," Damien finished.

Tears threatened to fall again, but this time Evelyn refused to cry.

She had already shed enough tears for a man who never deserved them.

"Why are you showing me this?" she asked.

"Because I don't like betrayal."

Damien looked out the window, his sharp eyes reflecting the city lights.

"My nephew crossed a line."

The car stopped in front of a magnificent mansion overlooking the city.

Damien stepped out first.

"Come with me."

Inside, servants bowed respectfully.

"Welcome home, Mr. Brooks."

Damien ignored them and led Evelyn into his private study.

He poured two glasses of water before sitting across from her.

"I'll make this simple."

He slid a document across the table.

It was a marriage contract.

Evelyn stared at it in disbelief.

"You want... to marry me?"

"Yes."

She almost laughed.

"This has to be a joke."

"It isn't."

"But I'm your nephew's wife."

"For another few days."

Damien's voice was calm.

"Once your divorce is finalized, marry me."

Evelyn searched his face.

"Why?"

"Because I need a wife."

"And because watching the woman he threw away become his aunt will be the greatest lesson Adrian ever receives."

For the first time that night...

Evelyn smiled.

It was small.

It was filled with pain.

But it was real.

She looked down at the contract once more.

Perhaps revenge wasn't the answer.

Yet losing everything had taught her one painful truth.

Being kind had only made her easy to betray.

She picked up the pen.

"I have one condition."

Damien raised an eyebrow.

"I will never love you."

A mysterious smile crossed his handsome face.

"That's convenient."

"Because I never asked for your love."

Outside, thunder echoed across the night sky as Evelyn signed the contract that would change both their lives forever.
