Chapter 2 - Silent Cracks

The waiting room felt colder than it had an hour ago.

Jimin sat with his hands clasped together, his gaze fixed on the floor. The doctor's words from earlier echoed in his mind, refusing to fade.

"Mr. Park, your test results are back."

His heart sank.

The doctor adjusted the file in his hands before speaking gently.

"I'm afraid you've developed progressive sensorineural hearing loss."

Jimin stared blankly.

"...What does that mean?"

"It means your hearing will continue to deteriorate over time. We can slow the process with treatment in some cases, but we cannot reverse it."

Silence.

"So..." Jimin swallowed hard.

"One day..."

"...I won't be able to hear music anymore?" The doctor lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words shattered everything.

Rain poured heavily as Jimin stepped out of the hospital.

People hurried past him with umbrellas, laughing, talking, living.

Their voices blended into a distant blur.

For the first time in his life...

The world frightened him.

Music had always been his safe place.

Without it...

Who was Park Jimin?

The following days became a routine of pretending.

He smiled during rehearsals.

He laughed with the orchestra.

He assured everyone he was simply exhausted.

No one questioned him.

Except one person.

Yoongi.

Every rehearsal, Yoongi found himself watching Jimin more than listening to the orchestra.Jimin still played beautifully. But something had changed.

There were tiny pauses.Tiny hesitations.

Tiny moments where fear flashed across his face before disappearing behind another smile.

Yoongi couldn't explain it.

He only knew...

Jimin wasn't okay.

Late one evening, the rehearsal ended earlier than expected.

As everyone packed their belongings, Yoongi noticed Jimin leaving in a hurry.

Without thinking, he followed.

"Jimin."

Jimin stopped walking and turned around.

"Oh... You're still here."

"You've been avoiding everyone."

Jimin forced a chuckle.

"I've just been busy."

"You've said that every day this week."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Jimin smiled again.

"I should go."

Before Yoongi could stop him, Jimin disappeared into the crowd.

Back in his apartment, Jimin locked the door behind him.

The silence greeted him like an old friend.

He walked toward the piano sitting beside the window.

It had been his birthday gift from his parents years ago.

He gently pressed a single key.

Nothing.

He frowned and pressed another.

A faint sound reached him.

Another key.

Clear.

Another.

Almost gone.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

He struck the keys harder.

"No..."

Again.

And again.

The melody he had played thousands of times sounded broken.

Not because of the piano.

Because of him.

Tears blurred his vision.

He rested his forehead against the keyboard and cried until the room became completely silent.

The next afternoon, Yoongi stood outside Jimin's apartment holding two iced coffees.

He had no reason to visit.

At least, that's what he kept telling himself.

After several knocks, the door slowly opened.

Jimin looked exhausted.

Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.

"You didn't answer your phone," Yoongi said quietly.

"I was sleeping."

"You've been sleeping all day?"

"...Maybe."

Yoongi held out one of the coffees.

"I figured you'd forget to eat."

A small smile appeared on Jimin's face.

"Thank you."

He stepped aside.

"You can come in."

The apartment was unusually quiet.

Music sheets covered the coffee table.

Several crumpled pages lay scattered across the floor.

Yoongi glanced around before placing the drinks on the table.

As Jimin walked toward the kitchen...

A small object slipped from his hoodie pocket.

It landed on the wooden floor with a soft click.

Yoongi looked down.

A hearing aid.

He froze.

Slowly, he bent down and picked it up.

Jimin turned around.

The color drained from his face.

For a long moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Yoongi looked at the tiny device resting in his palm.

Then he looked at Jimin.

"What..."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"...is this?"

Jimin's lips parted, but no words came out.

The secret he had protected for months...

Had finally been exposed.
