*Chapter 3: Broken Blades *

*One week later. 5:00 AM. Abandoned Shrine Grounds.*

Ren was already bleeding.

“Again,” Kaito said. No sympathy. No warmth. Just command.

Ren got up. His ribs hurt. His wrists hurt. The blue light in his hands flickered and died.

“You’re thinking too much,” Kaito said, circling him. “You’re treating the power like it’s a weapon. It’s not. It’s a memory.”

“How is that supposed to help?” Ren snapped, wiping blood from his lip.

“Because 800 years ago you didn’t _cast_ spells,” Kaito said. “You remembered how to win.”

Sora sat on the shrine steps, legs crossed, sipping tea like this was a normal morning.

“Don’t be so hard on him, Kaito. He only manifested a week ago.”

“He died a week ago,” Kaito shot back. “In a past life. He needs to remember faster or R will use him as a snack.”

Ren closed his eyes. Breathed.

Snow. Steel. Screaming.

The battlefield opened behind his eyelids.

When he opened them again, the blue light was steady.

It wrapped around his arms like armor.

“Better,” Kaito said. “Now hit me.”

They trained until the sun was high.

*The Rules Kaito Drilled Into Him:*

*Memory is Fuel*: The clearer the memory, the stronger the power. Vague fear \= weak glow. Specific guilt \= real damage.

*Don’t Use His Name*: “The moment you say ‘I am General Ren’ out loud, every general within 10km will feel it. Including Hayato.”

*Control the Voice*: “That thing in your head? That’s not me. That’s you. Past-you. If you let him drive, you’ll become him again.”

By noon, Ren could hold the blue armor for 30 seconds without passing out. Progress.

Sora walked over and pressed a cold cloth to his forehead. Her healing light was soft. Gold.

“You’re doing better than I did,” she said. “When I woke up, I cried for three days because I remembered dying.”

“Did you?” Ren asked.

“In the fire,” she said quietly. “You came back for me. That’s why I followed you in this life too.”

Kaito looked away. Jealous? Annoyed? Ren couldn’t tell.

“Kaito,” Sora said. “Let him rest. And we need to talk about R.”

“What about him?”

“He’s not just feeding,” Sora said. “He’s collecting. Every time we fight, every time we remember, he gets stronger. He’s been doing it for 800 years.”

“So what do we do?” Ren asked.

Kaito and Sora looked at each other.

“We make you strong enough to kill a god,” Kaito said.

*Part 1.5: The First Lesson - Weapons*

That night they moved to an underground dojo. Concrete walls. No windows. No cameras.

On the wall were 5 weapons.

A spear. A sword. A fan of bone. A bow. A nodachi.

“The five generals,” Sora explained. “Each of us had one.”

She pointed. “Spear was yours, Ren. Sword was Kaito’s. Fan was Yumi’s. Bow was mine. Nodachi was Hayato’s.”

Ren walked to the spear. It was just a wooden training pole.

The moment he touched it, the blue light surged.

Images hit him:

Leading a charge. The spear going through armor. The weight of it. The responsibility.

“Careful,” Kaito said. “That thing will try to make you him again.”

“I need to be him,” Ren said. “Or I can’t beat R.”

“No,” Kaito said sharply. “You need to be _better_ than him.”

They sparred. Spear vs Sword.

For the first time, Ren wasn’t just blocking. He was moving with purpose.

The spear became an extension of his arm.

Blue light ran along the wood.

Kaito actually smiled. “There he is.”

Then the lights cut out.

*Part 1.6: Ambush*

Darkness.

Footsteps.

Not Kaito’s. Not Sora’s.

“Yumi,” Kaito said.

From the shadows, the fan snapped open. Ice spread across the floor.

“You’ve been busy, teacher,” Yumi purred. “But you forgot the first rule. Never train where you can be found.”

“I let you find us,” Kaito said. “Wanted to see if you’d come alone.”

She didn’t.

From the ceiling, Hayato dropped down. Faceless. Nodachi out.

Ren stepped in front of Sora. Spear up.

The blue light flared.

Yumi laughed. “Oh, he’s learning. Cute.”

“Last chance, Yumi,” Kaito said. “Walk away.”

“Never,” she said. “R promised me answers if I brought him Ren’s head.”

The fight was short and brutal.

Kaito vs Yumi. Ice vs Fire.

Sora vs Hayato. Healing vs Rage.

Ren in the middle, trying to protect both of them.

He failed.

Hayato’s nodachi clipped Sora’s shoulder. She screamed.

Something in Ren broke.

The memory came. Not the war. Not the killing.

The fire. Running into a burning building to pull out a girl with gold eyes.

Sora.

_“I won’t let you die again.”_

The blue light exploded.

Not armor this time. A wave.

It threw Hayato back and shattered Yumi’s ice.

When the light faded, Yumi and Hayato were gone.

Only scorch marks and frost remained.

Ren collapsed.

Sora was bleeding, but alive.

Kaito knelt beside him.

“You chose,” Kaito said quietly. “You chose this life over the last one.”

Ren nodded, unconscious.

---

*3 Hours Later. Sora’s Apartment.*

Ren woke up to the smell of herbs and gold light.

“You’re awake,” Sora said. She was bandaging her own shoulder. The wound from Hayato was already closing.

“How long was I out?” Ren croaked.

“Four hours,” Kaito answered from the window. He hadn’t moved. “You fried the entire block’s power grid.”

Ren sat up. The blue light didn’t flicker anymore. It was there, under his skin. Quiet. Waiting.

“I remember,” he said.

“Remember what?” Sora asked.

“The fire,” Ren said. “I remember pulling you out. You were 12. You had burns on your hands.”

Sora’s breath caught. “You weren’t supposed to remember that. That was before the war.”

“Then why do I?”

Kaito turned. “Because R is pulling the memories forward. He’s not just waking us up. He’s accelerating us. He wants us at full power.”

“So he can eat us,” Ren finished.

Silence.

*The Truth About 800 Years Ago*

Sora poured tea. Her hands were steady now.

“We weren’t enemies,” she said. “Not at first. The five of us were chosen to end a war between kingdoms.”

“Me: Strategy,” Kaito said. “Yumi: Intelligence. Hayato: Force. Sora: Healing. You: Command.”

Ren nodded. “And I ordered the betrayal.”

“You ordered a ceasefire,” Sora corrected. “But it looked like betrayal. You went to the enemy camp alone to negotiate. They killed you. We thought you sold us out.”

“So we killed each other,” Kaito said flatly. “And the war never ended.”

“And R fell through,” Ren whispered.

Kaito’s jaw tightened. “Now he wants to see if we’ll do it again.”

Ren looked at his hands. The blue light pulsed once.

“Then we don’t,” he said. “We train. We get strong. And we kill him instead.”

Sora smiled. Small. “That’s my general.”

*Part 2.2: Training Montage*

For the next 5 days, they didn’t go to school. Excuses were made.

*Day 1: Control*

Kaito made Ren hold the blue armor for 1 hour straight while throwing rocks at him.

“Pain focuses the memory,” Kaito said. “Use it.”

By the end, Ren could take a hit without the light breaking.

*Day 2: Memory*

Sora walked Ren through every death he remembered. One by one.

“Don’t run from them,” she said. “Feel them. Then let them go.”

He cried. He screamed. He didn’t break.

*Day 3: Teamwork*

Spear + Sword + Bow.

Kaito attacked, Ren defended, Sora covered.

They moved like they’d done it for centuries. Because they had.

*Day 4: Weakness*

“Your power is tied to guilt,” Kaito said. “R knows that. He’ll use it.”

So they simulated it. Kaito pretended to be civilians dying. Sora pretended to be betrayed.

Ren learned to fight through it.

*Day 5: The Test*

At midnight, in the dojo, Kaito drew his real sword. Not wood. Steel.

“Last test,” he said. “Hit me. For real. If you hesitate, you’re not ready.”

Ren raised the spear.

The blue light was blinding.

He thrust.

Kaito blocked. Sparks flew.

They moved. Fast. Too fast for human eyes.

Spear against sword. Memory against memory.

Finally, Ren disarmed him. The spear point stopped an inch from Kaito’s throat.

Kaito stared at him. Then he laughed.

“Good. You’re ready.”

*Part 2.3: The Signal*

That night, Ren’s phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: `Impressive. 5 days and you’re already this strong.

Meet me. Alone. Old Temple on Mt. Banahaw. Midnight.

Come, or I start with Takumi. -R`

Ren showed it to Kaito and Sora.

“He’s bluffing,” Kaito said. “He wouldn’t touch Takumi. He needs us to hate each other, not random people.”

“But what if he does?” Ren said.

“Then we go,” Sora said. “All three of us.”

“No,” Ren said. “He said alone. If I bring you, he’ll hurt Takumi.”

Kaito grabbed his collar. “If you go alone, you’ll die.”

“Then I won’t die,” Ren said. “Because I’m not him anymore.”

*Part 2.4: Mt. Banahaw. 11:59 PM.*

The temple was ruins. 300 years old. Covered in vines.

And in the center, sitting on an altar, was R.

Reading a book.

“Ah, Ren,” he said without looking up. “You came. And alone. Brave.”

“Where’s Takumi?”

“Safe. For now,” R said. “I keep my promises. Mostly.”

He closed the book.

“You’ve changed,” R said, looking Ren up and down. “Less broken. More dangerous.”

“What do you want?”

“The same thing I’ve always wanted,” R said. “To see if hate is stronger than mercy.”

He stood. “So let’s test it.”

The ground shook.

From the shadows, 20 figures stepped out.

They looked human. But their eyes were black.

“Puppets,” R said. “People whose hatred I’ve been feeding on for years. Now they’re mine.”

He pointed at Ren.

“Kill him. Or I kill one person in San Jose del Monte every 10 minutes until you do.”

Ren drew the spear. The blue light came.

He was alone. Outnumbered.

But he wasn’t the same boy who died in the snow.

“Don’t fail again,”_ he told himself.

And he charged.

---

*Mt. Banahaw. 12:01 AM.*

The first puppet lunged.

Ren didn’t think.

Spear came up, blue light flaring, and caught it in the chest.

The puppet dissolved into black smoke and ash.

“One,” Ren breathed.

Nineteen left.

They came all at once. Knives. Chains. Bare hands.

Eyes black. Mouths open in silent screams.

_“They’re people,”_ the voice in his head whispered. _“R is using people.”_

Ren hesitated for half a second.

A chain wrapped around his ankle and yanked him down.

Pain shot up his leg.

*“MOVE!”*

Kaito.

He dropped from the temple roof, sword of blue fire cutting the chain.

“Idiot,” he hissed. “I said no interference.”

“You’re terrible at listening,” Ren shot back, rolling to his feet.

Sora landed next. Bow drawn, arrows of gold light.

Each shot hit a puppet in the forehead and purified it. The black smoke turned white and faded.

“I’m also terrible at letting friends die,” she said.

R clapped from the altar. “Beautiful. The band is back together.”

“This isn’t what you wanted,” Ren shouted. “You wanted us to kill each other!”

“I wanted to see if you’d change,” R said. “And you did. How boring.”

He snapped his fingers.

The remaining 15 puppets’ bodies twisted. Bones cracked. They grew claws.

“Fine. New rules. Kill them, or they kill a city block in 10 minutes. Starting now.”

His watch beeped. 10:00.

*The Fight*

This wasn’t training anymore.

Ren moved. Spear became a blur.

He wasn’t aiming to kill. He was aiming to _break_.

Blue light hit joints, not hearts. Disarmed, not executed.

Kaito was a storm. Every swing ended a puppet. Clean. Merciless.

“Stop holding back!” he yelled at Ren.

“I’m not like you!” Ren yelled back.

Sora’s arrows pinned puppets to walls, then her gold light burned the corruption out of them.

They collapsed, breathing, human again.

8 puppets left. 6:00 on the timer.

One of them grabbed Sora from behind. Knife to her throat.

Ren saw it.

Memory hit: Sora burning. Sora screaming. His fault.

Rage.

Not 800-year-old rage. New rage.

The blue light around Ren’s spear turned white.

He threw it.

The spear didn’t hit the puppet.

It hit the air between them and _exploded_ in a shockwave of light.

The puppet was thrown off. Unconscious, not dead.

Sora was safe.

R’s smile faltered. “Huh.”

4 puppets left. 2:00.

They rushed together.

Kaito took two. Sora took one.

That left one. The biggest. Coming straight for Ren.

Ren planted his feet.

He remembered the last time he stood like this.

Snow. The sword. His friend.

He didn’t raise the spear to kill.

He raised it to block.

The puppet’s claw came down.

Ren caught it.

Blue light poured into the puppet’s arm, up to its chest, into its eyes.

The black faded.

The eyes cleared.

It was a man. Maybe 30. Scared.

“Go,” Ren whispered. “Run home.”

The man ran.

0:00.

Silence.

R stood up. Slow clap.

“Well. That was unexpected.”

“You lost,” Ren said. Breathing hard. Bleeding. But standing.

“Did I?” R tilted his head. “I learned what I needed. You’re not your past self. You’re something new.”

“So what now?” Kaito said, sword still out.

“Now?” R smiled. “Now I stop watching.”

He walked down from the altar.

Stopped in front of Ren.

“They killed each other because of you last time,” R whispered. “Will they die for you this time?”

He tapped Ren’s chest, right over his heart.

Cold spread.

“A gift,” R said. “So we can play properly next time.”

Then he was gone. Black smoke.

The temple was quiet.

The puppets were gone. The people were safe.

Takumi was safe.

Ren collapsed to his knees.

Kaito caught him.

“What did he do to you?” Sora asked, hands already glowing.

“I don’t know,” Ren said. “But I can feel him. In here.”

He touched his chest.

Under his skin, something black pulsed once.

Then went quiet.

*One Week Later. School.*

Things were almost normal.

Almost.

Ren sat by the window. Third row.

Kaito behind him. Sora at the nurse’s office.

Takumi was alive and clueless.

The voice in his head was gone.

In its place was a quiet cold.

Homeroom started.

Ms. Akiyama walked in.

“Oh, and we have a new student council advisor starting today,” she said. “Please welcome Mr. Ryou.”

The door opened.

R.

Glasses. Suit. Clipboard. Smiling.

“Pleased to meet you all,” he said. “I’ll be overseeing extracurricular activities.”

His eyes met Ren’s.

“Especially the ones after school.”

Ren’s hand clenched under the desk.

The black thing in his chest pulsed.

Kaito kicked his chair.

Ren exhaled.
