Chapter 4: School Infiltration*

...*Monday. 7:30 AM. Gate.*...

The first thing that was wrong: the student council banner.

It used to be blue and white.

Now it was black, with a single red eye in the center.

Nobody else seemed to notice.

“Morning, General,” Kaito said, falling into step beside Ren. He had dark circles. He hadn’t slept. “R’s already in the office.”

“How do you know?”

“I can feel him,” Kaito said. “Like static in my teeth.”

Sora met them at their classroom door. “He changed the club list. Archery, kendo, and history club are now ‘mandatory leadership training.’ Guess who’s running it?”

“R,” Ren said.

The bell rang.

*First Period: Student Council Room.*

R was already there. Sitting at the president’s desk. Feet up.

“Ah, Tachibana-kun. Shirogane-kun. Sora-sensei,” he smiled. “Perfect timing.”

The room was empty except for them.

“I’ve been reviewing files,” R said, tapping a folder. “Fascinating. Car accident, head trauma, sudden personality change. And you two,” he looked at Kaito and Sora, “transfer and new hire on the same week. What are the odds?”

“We’re lucky,” Kaito said flatly.

R laughed. “I’m starting a new program. After-school detention for ‘students with potential.’ You three are my first picks.”

“Detention?” Ren asked.

“More like training,” R said. “To help you control those... flashes. The ones where you remember dying.”

Ren went cold.

“How—”

“I’m observant,” R cut him off. “4:00 PM. Old gym. Don’t be late. Or I’ll have to call your parents. And your friend Takumi.”

He dismissed them with a wave.

*3:55 PM. Old Gym.*

Dusty. Broken hoops. No windows.

R was waiting, sitting cross-legged in the center of a circle drawn in salt.

“Welcome,” he said. “Today’s lesson: resisting influence.”

He held up a small black shard. It pulsed like Ren’s chest did.

“This is a piece of me,” R said. “I’m going to try to make you angry. You have to not punch me.”

Kaito stepped forward. “We’re not doing this.”

“Then Takumi gets detention instead,” R said simply.

Ren moved to the center of the circle. “Fine. Do it.”

R crushed the shard.

Black smoke went into Ren’s nose, mouth, ears.

And the memories hit.

Not his. Other people’s.

A mother crying. A soldier burning. A child screaming Ren’s name as the spear came down.

All of it his fault.

“Feel that guilt?” R whispered. “That’s delicious. That’s what I’ve been eating for 800 years.”

“Stop,” Ren gritted out.

“Make me,” R said.

The blue light came. Uncontrolled. Wild.

It cracked the floor.

Kaito and Sora grabbed him before he could hit R.

“Good,” R said, brushing dust off. “You’re learning. Next time, try not to destroy school property.”

He left.

*6:00 PM. Roof.*

Ren sat with his head in his hands.

“He’s in my head,” he said. “Every time I get angry, I can hear him laughing.”

“That’s the mark,” Sora said. “He’s using it to watch you. And to push you.”

“Then we cut it out,” Kaito said.

“You can’t,” Sora said. “It’s tied to his life force now. If we remove it wrong, Ren dies.”

Silence.

“So what do we do?” Ren asked.

“We play his game,” Kaito said. “But better. He wants us in detention? Fine. We use it. We train where he can see us. We let him think he’s winning.”

“And then?”

“And then we figure out how to kill a god without blowing up the school,” Sora said.

From below, the PA crackled.

R’s voice.

“Attention students. Reminder: Leadership Training is mandatory. See you tomorrow, Tachibana-kun.”

Ren looked at Kaito. At Sora.

He stood up.

“Okay,” he said. “Let’s play.”

The black thing in his chest pulsed.

And for the first time, Ren pulsed back.

...*Tuesday. 4:00 PM. Old Gym - "Leadership Training"*...

____________________________________________

The gym had changed overnight.

Salt circles were now drawn on every wall. Black banners with the red eye hung from the rafters.

And in the center, 20 desks.

10 students already sat at them. All with blank eyes. All with a faint black mark on their necks.

Takumi was in the 11th desk.

Ren froze.

“Yo, Ren!” Takumi waved, too cheerful. “R-sensei said this is for students with leadership potential! Isn’t that cool?”

Kaito grabbed Ren’s wrist under the desk. _Don’t._

Sora, standing by the door in her nurse uniform, gave a tiny shake of her head.

R clapped from the stage. “Welcome! Today we learn about control.”

*The Lesson*

“Everyone, close your eyes,” R said. “Think of the thing that makes you angriest.”

The 20 students flinched. The black marks on their necks pulsed.

Takumi’s hands shook.

Ren could feel it too. The mark in his chest answering. Pulling.

_“They took you from me.”_

_“You failed.”_

_“Kill them.”_

R walked between the desks, whispering.

“Good. Good. Let it out. That’s where your power lives.”

He stopped behind Ren.

“General,” he murmured, just for him. “What makes you angriest?”

Ren didn’t answer.

“Is it me? Or is it you? For what you did 800 years ago?”

The blue light flickered under Ren’s skin.

Kaito kicked his chair. Hard.

_Focus._

Ren breathed. Remembered Sora in the fire. Remembered choosing to save instead of kill yesterday.

The light steadied.

R frowned for half a second. Then smiled wider. “Excellent. Dismissed.”

The students blinked like waking up. Except Takumi. Takumi looked at Ren and smiled.

But it wasn’t his smile.

*After School. Nurse’s Office.*

Sora scanned Ren with gold light.

“The mark is growing,” she said. “He’s feeding it with those other kids.”

“Can you get it out?” Ren asked.

“Not without killing you,” she said. “But I can teach you to fight it. From the inside.”

Kaito slammed his fist on a table. “We need to go to the principal. To the police. Something.”

“And tell them what?” Sora said. “That the new advisor is a 800-year-old parasite? They’ll lock us up.”

“Then what?”

“We cut off his supply,” Ren said quietly. “Those 20 kids. If we break them out, he gets weaker.”

Kaito looked at him. “That means going back tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” Ren said. “And this time, we don’t just survive it.”

*Wednesday. 4:00 PM. Old Gym.*

Only 15 desks this time. 5 students were absent.

R noticed immediately.

“Where are my others?” he asked, voice sweet.

“Flu,” Sora said smoothly. “I sent them home.”

“How thoughtful,” R said.

The lesson today: pain.

R had them hold ice until their hands bled.

“Pain makes the mark stronger,” he explained. “Use it.”

Takumi was crying silently.

Ren couldn’t take it.

He stood up.

“Sit down, Tachibana-kun,” R said.

“No,” Ren said. The blue light came, but controlled. It wrapped around his hands.

He walked to Takumi and took the ice from him.

“Enough,” Ren said.

The whole room went silent.

R tilted his head. “Are you defying me?”

“I’m teaching,” Ren said. “That’s what leaders do, right?”

R laughed. “Oh, this is new. Alright. Let’s see how your classmates handle it.”

He snapped his fingers.

The 14 other students stood up. Their eyes went black.

“Attack him,” R ordered.

They charged.

*The Fight in the Gym*

Ren didn’t hit them.

He blocked. He disarmed. He used the blue light to knock them out, not hurt them.

Kaito took 5. Fast. Clean.

Sora used her bow to pin the rest to the walls with light arrows.

In 2 minutes, it was over.

14 students unconscious. Breathing. Safe.

R clapped. Slowly.

“Beautiful. You didn’t kill any of them.”

“Was that the point?” Ren asked.

“Partly,” R said. “I wanted to see if you’d become a monster to save people. You didn’t.”

“So I win?”

“You pass,” R said. “This round.”

He walked to Takumi, who was still sitting, shaking.

R put a hand on Takumi’s head.

The black mark flared.

Takumi screamed.

“Stop!” Ren yelled.

“Then come get him,” R said. “Alone. Tomorrow. Rooftop. Midnight.”

He let go. Takumi collapsed.

R walked out, stepping over students like they were nothing.

*Midnight. Rooftop.*

Ren was there. Alone.

R was sitting on the ledge, legs dangling over 6 floors.

“You came,” R said. “I’m proud.”

“What do you want?”

“To make you an offer,” R said. “Join me. We can rule this cycle together. No more war. No more death. Just me, you, and all the power we want.”

“And the others?”

“They can watch,” R said. “Or they can die. Your choice.”

He held out his hand.

The black mark in Ren’s chest burned.

For a second, Ren almost took it.

Power. No more guilt. No more fear.

Then he remembered Sora’s gold light. Kaito’s sword. Takumi’s real smile.

“No,” Ren said.

R sighed. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

He stood up. “War it is, then.”

He jumped off the roof.

And didn’t fall.

He just dissolved into smoke.

Ren was left alone on the roof.

The mark in his chest was quiet.

But he could feel R laughing somewhere far away.

...*Thursday. 11:58 PM. Rooftop → Old Gym*...

____________________________________________

Ren didn’t go home.

He texted Kaito and Sora: `Trap. Gym. Midnight.`

Then he went anyway.

The school was dark. Except the old gym.

Light poured out from under the doors. And a sound.

Whispering. 20 voices. Saying his name.

He pushed the doors open.

R was sitting in a chair in the center of the salt circle.

Around him, standing in a ring: Yumi, Hayato, and 18 students. Eyes black. Marks glowing.

Kaito and Sora were already there. Back to back. Surrounded.

“Took you long enough,” R said. “I was starting to think you didn’t care about your friends.”

“What is this?” Ren asked.

“A reunion,” R said. “All 5 generals in one room. For the first time in 800 years.”

He gestured. “Say hi.”

Yumi’s fan snapped open. Ice.

Hayato raised his nodachi. No face.

The 18 students stepped forward.

“They’re not themselves,” Sora said. “R’s controlling them through the marks.”

“Then we break the marks,” Kaito said.

R sighed. “You could try. But if you hurt them, the backlash will kill them. And I’ll get stronger.”

“So what do you want?” Ren asked.

“I want to see who you choose,” R said. “The past, or the present.”

He snapped his fingers.

*The Fight: 5 vs 18 + 2*

Yumi moved first. Ice shot across the floor.

Kaito intercepted with fire. The gym filled with steam.

Hayato charged Sora. She rolled, firing gold arrows to keep him back.

That left Ren and the 18 students.

“Don’t fight them,” Sora yelled. “Purify them!”

“How?!”

“Remember!” she said. “Use the memory of saving, not killing!”

Ren closed his eyes.

Fire. Pulling Sora out.

Snow. Choosing to negotiate instead of burn.

Yesterday. Choosing to knock out instead of execute.

The blue light around him turned white.

“Get back!” he yelled.

He slammed his hands on the ground.

A wave of white light exploded out.

It didn’t hurt.

It washed over the 18 students.

One by one, their eyes cleared. The black marks cracked and fell off like ash.

They collapsed, breathing, free.

R stood up. “Cheater.”

“You said to choose,” Ren said. “I choose them.”

Only Yumi and Hayato were left. Still under R’s control.

“Fine,” R said. “If you won’t break them, I will.”

He walked to Hayato and put a hand on his chest.

Black spikes shot out of Hayato’s back.

He screamed. A sound with no mouth.

“Hayato!” Sora ran to him.

“Don’t touch him!” Kaito warned. “It’s a trap!”

Too late.

The spikes lashed out and caught Sora’s arm.

Black corruption spread up to her shoulder in seconds.

“Sora!” Ren ran.

R laughed. “And now, the healer bleeds.”

Ren didn’t think.

He grabbed Sora and pulled her back.

The blue-white light came again, but this time he aimed it _inward_.

Into Sora. Into the black.

It burned. Both of them screamed.

The black receded. Slowly. Inch by inch.

Until it was gone.

Sora gasped, alive.

Ren collapsed, the mark in his chest now cracked.

Silence.

R looked... annoyed.

“Huh. You can fight me from the inside now.”

He looked at Yumi. “Kill him.”

Yumi hesitated. For a second.

Then she attacked.

Kaito met her. Sword vs Fan.

They were evenly matched. Too even.

“Yield, Yumi,” Kaito said.

“Never,” she spat. “He promised me answers.”

“He lied,” Kaito said. “Like he’s lying to you now.”

Something in Yumi’s eyes flickered.

She pulled her strike at the last second. The fan cut Kaito’s cheek instead of his throat.

Then she turned and ran. Out the window.

Hayato followed her, dragging his nodachi.

Gone.

R was the only one left.

He looked at the empty gym. At the 18 sleeping students. At Ren bleeding on the floor.

“You’re no fun anymore,” he said. “I thought you’d break.”

“I did,” Ren said, voice hoarse. “800 years ago. Not again.”

R smiled. “We’ll see.”

He walked to the door.

“Oh, and Ren? The mark is cracked. That means I can get in easier now. Sweet dreams.”

He left.

*30 Minutes Later. Ambulance Lights.*

Paramedics took the 18 students.

The principal was screaming. The police were asking questions.

Kaito lied for all of them. “Gas leak. Mass hysteria.”

Sora was stable. Her arm was bandaged.

Ren was awake. The crack in his chest throbbed.

“You did good,” Kaito said quietly.

“I didn’t save Yumi or Hayato,” Ren said.

“You saved 18 people,” Sora said. “And yourself.”

Outside, the sky was clear. No red.

For the first time in weeks.

Ren looked at his hands. The blue light was still there.

But now there was a thin black line running through it.

R was inside him.

But Ren was inside R too now.
