~The Chaos Next To Me~ 2
🦋🦋🦋
The Years Between Us
Ten years.
That's how long it had been since two little boys stood on the same street...
promising they would meet again.
A lot could happen in ten years.
Children grew taller.
Voices changed.
Homes changed.
Even the places that once felt familiar could begin to look different.
But some memories...
never really grew old.
-------------------
In Australia
Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains.
A teenage boy reached over and silenced his alarm.
"Five more minutes..."
A voice came from outside his room.
"Toru! You'll be late!"
"I'm coming!"
He sat up reluctantly.
The little boy who once complained about homework and argued over lunch boxes was gone.
In his place was a teenager who moved through his mornings with practiced routine.
School uniform.
Books.
Breakfast.
A quick goodbye.
Life in Australia had become normal.
The streets no longer felt unfamiliar.
The language no longer felt strange.
He had friends.
Teachers who knew him.
Places he visited every week.
A life that belonged entirely to him.
Before leaving his room, his eyes briefly fell on an old box sitting at the back of his shelf.
He paused.
Then opened it.
Inside were a few things from another time.
A faded photograph.
A tiny purikura strip.
And a small friendship badge.
He picked up the badge.
The edges were slightly worn.
He smiled faintly.
"...Still here."
He placed it carefully back inside.
Then closed the box.
"Bye."
And just like that...
he stepped into another ordinary day.
-------------------
In Japan
Across the ocean...
another morning began.
A boy sat quietly at the breakfast table.
His mother placed his breakfast in front of him.
"Don't forget your lunch."
"Okay."
"Your school bag?"
"I have it."
She smiled.
"You're getting ready early these days."
He simply shrugged.
"Couldn't sleep."
He finished breakfast and stood.
Before leaving, he noticed something on a nearby shelf.
An old photograph.
Five little children stood together.
One of them was making an absurd face.
He stared at it for a moment.
Then smiled.
Very slightly.
His mother noticed.
"You still keep that?"
He looked at the photograph.
"Yeah."
She didn't ask anything else.
He slipped it carefully into a drawer.
Then picked up his school bag.
"I'm leaving."
"Have a good day."
"Mm."
The door closed behind him.
The boy who once filled every street with noise...
now walked quietly through the morning.
-------------------
Years had passed.
The first few years after the move had been different.
There had been visits.
Summer vacations.
Laughter.
Games.
Five friends meeting again as though nothing had changed.
Then...
the visits became less frequent.
And eventually—
they stopped.
No dramatic goodbye.
No final argument.
No clear ending.
Life simply became busy.
Days became months.
Months became years.
And the children who once thought tomorrow would always bring them back together...
grew up.
--------------------
In Australia...
a teenager walked through a crowded school corridor.
Friends called his name.
He turned and smiled.
He belonged here now.
🌸
In Japan...
another teenager walked beneath familiar trees on his way to school.
The streets had changed.
So had he.
Neither knew what the other was doing.
Neither knew how much the other had changed.
Neither knew that their lives...
after years of moving in completely different directions...
were slowly beginning to turn toward the same place.
Some friendships disappear with time.
Some become memories.
And some...
simply wait.
Because sometimes...
distance isn't the end of a story.
It's only the space between two chapters.
