Chapter 4: Everything seems to be an excuse

* Flashback *

Qin Zhiai pulled her big and heavy luggage into the house. She saw Gu Yusheng sitting on the sofa in the living room.

“You know, grandpa is the only family that I have in this world. If you didn’t trick my grandpa into believing you and ask me to live with you, I’ll never allow you to step your filthy foot into my house. I don’t even want to lay my eyes on you. And you should better not let my grandpa know that I hate you. If he finds out and becomes vexed about it, I won’t let you get away with it!”, he said in his arrogant tones.

Qin Zhiai could not utter a single word. She knew she did not have the power to say anything under his control.

“Your room is the last room at the corner there”, he said while pointing to a small room. We are supposed to sleep in the same room, isn’t it?

She pushed the door. The room was not bad except for the thick dust on the floor and its windows. At least she would be able to look outside and take fresh air whenever she misses her family. Family? The word ‘family’ had disappeared from her dictionary after being sold to Gu family to pay their debts. But, it was not too bad as she had a crush on Gu Yusheng since they were in high school. She was a shy girl so she could only look at Gu Yusheng from afar. She hoped one day she would be able to walk the aisle with Gu Yusheng.

* back to reality *

“Auntie Zhang, I get it. I will tell Yusheng about the invitation from grandpa”, Qin Zhiai said. She tries to hide her feeling and smiles when speaking to Auntie Zhang.

She puts down the phone and takes her mobile phone. She tries to reassure herself that this is an important matter. Gu Yusheng will not get mad at her by calling him for this matter. She searches Gu Yusheng’s number in her contact lists.

Toot---Toot---Toot---

“Sorry, the subscriber you dialled is busy now”, the operator answers her call. Qin Zhiai waits for a few minutes and tries to call again.

“Sorry, the subscriber you dialled cannot be reached…”, again the operator answers her.

“Maybe he blocked me”, she murmurs.

She tries to call Gu Yusheng through the house’s phone.

Toot---Toot---Toot---

Gu Yusheng picks up. Qi Zhiai puts the phone near to her ears.

“Can you stop calling me? I told you not to bother me! Are you deaf?!”, Gu Yusheng shouts through the phone.

It hurts her ears.

“Grandpa just called. He said he will come home this morning and he asked us to have dinner at his house. Like before, I’ll wait for you at that place. Is that okay for you? Maybe you can pick me at 6 PM”, Qin Zhiai said. The bedsheet near her is crumpled now because she is too scared so she holds the bedsheet strongly.

“Don’t use grandpa as your excuse. It disgusts me!”, Gu Yusheng said intensely.

Toot---Toot---Toot---

He hangs up.

Qin Zhiai puts the phone down. She is trembling because of his loud voice. She is not ready to meet him. She pulls her blanket and covers herself while she cries helplessly, alone.
