Chapter 5: Dinner at the old house

Qin Zhiai is standing at a building. That is the place that she will wait for Gu Yusheng to fetch her whenever they want to meet grandpa. The slanting beams of the setting sun give a warm orange tinge to the sky. The evening sun cast a long shadow of Qin Zhiai on the ground. She has been standing there for 30 minutes. There is no bench provided for her to sit on. It is already 5:30 PM. It is time for Gu Yusheng to get off work. She is in doubt whether Gu Yusheng will come to fetch her on not.

* After an hour *

Honk---Honk----

She can see Gu Yusheng’s car parked in front of her. Her legs are cramped because of standing for so long. Gu Yusheng does not open the door for her. He is smoking while immersing himself in his own world.

Qin Zhiai gets into the car and wears her seatbelt.

Clack—

The atmosphere in the car is intense. None of them says anything. Suddenly, Gu Yusheng steps on the accelerator pedal and the car jerks forward. He presses it harder to increase the speed.

“Ah, wait a second!”, Qin Zhiai tries to stop him from driving too fast. But, he completely ignores her. She clings onto the handle near the door to avoid her body from jerking forward. Gu Yusheng’s expression is empty. He seems does not care about the safety of his own wife.

“It seems unnecessary to say hi to him”, Qin Zhiai monologues.

They finally reach the old house. A butler is waiting for them in front of the old house. Gu Yusheng stops the car and takes out the keys. He walks toward the house without waiting for Qin Zhiai to come together with him. As she has been standing for a long time with her high heels shoes, her legs are swollen and she cannot walk fast. Gu Yusheng is annoyed because she walks too slow. So, he approaches her and pulls her hand. He sighs. Qin Zhiai’s blushes. Not only her cheeks, but her whole face is beamed with redness. She is longing for Gu Yusheng to hold her hand like this since a long time ago but her wish never comes true. She looks into Gu Yusheng’s eyes, but he does not look at her back.

“We have been waiting for you. Come on in, I will prepare the dinner for you”, Auntie Zhang welcomes them. She has been waiting for their arrival near the front door.

“Master, the young master and mistress have arrived!”, she tells the old master.

Not long after that, the old master comes downstairs with his walking stick.

“Great, you’re here. I miss both of you. Come, let’s have dinner”, the old master said to both of them.

Gu Yusheng smiles broadly and looks at Qin Zhiai, “Don’t just stand there. Come and greet out grandpa”.

“Hello, grandpa! We bring your favourite snack today. Hope you’ll like it!”, Qin Zhiai said while smiling.

She almost forgets that this is just a show that Gu Yusheng puts on before his grandpa. And she is so silly to get carried away in the act. She thinks Gu Yusheng cares about her but actually, it is just an act so that grandpa will not suspect anything. She hopes if only this show can never come to an end….
