The next day as soon as I came into school, I noticed the try-out poster for the school's dance team. It's going to happen next Friday after school. Just enough time, for me to figure something out.
I checked the sign up sheet, there were quite a lot of sign ups. A lot of girls and a few guys.
One thing you still don't know about me: I love dancing. I've been dancing ever since I was 4 years old. Not dance mom level of dancing, but I was only 4 years old, you can't expect too much from a toddler, who can barely walk.
There hasn't been a year since my debut that I wouldn't have been signed up for a studio. I mostly do contamporary dance, but also can do some of the other styles.
While I was checking the sheet out, the same girl I met yesterday walked up to me. "Planning on signing up?" She asked with a fake smile.
"Indeed. Could I help you?" I look at her and notice another girl next to her. The girl was shorter than both of us. Maybe 5'4. She had short brown hair, and was wearing pretty ordinary clothing.
"Well, just want to let you know, that for the last three years me and Julie have been the best, so if you're going in, just to be the main character, I advise against it." Oh how annoying this girl is. Obviously, I'm not the one thinking I'm the main character.
"Just because you're 'the best' doesn't mean I can't sign up. Can you process that or will it hurt your ego?" I replied with the same fake smile she was giving me. "And I don't want to be the main character. Why be the boring protagonist, when you, can be the actually interesting antagonist?"
She looked really mad. Like, punch you in the face kind of mad. But obviously she wouldn't dare to do that. "Don't think you're better than me, just because you're from a big city."
"Honey, I'm not better because I'm from a big city. I'm just better, period." I walked away not waiting for her reply. She obviously want to make me know that she's the "queen bee". She can be delusional all she wants, but she better stop trying to make me believe her delusions.
The rest of the day wasn't anything special. After all the classes were done, I decided to go to the dance studio, to see what I'll be working with and to think of some moves.
I walked into the studio/auditorium and the first thing I noticed was the pretty good equipment. Better than what I expected. The stage was big, too. I was afraid that I'll have to work with a small stage, but it's spacious and I'll be able to come up with a routine that wouldn't just be in one spot.
I walked onto the stage. I didn't have dance clothes. But I was wearing clothing that was pretty easy to move in - leggings, a short sleeved shirt and some off brand sneakers. I tied my dark brown hair into a ponytail. I'm just gonna try some moves out. But first of all, stretching!
I start doing my warm up/stretch. While I was sat on the floor, stretching my legs and arms, someone came into the auditorium.
I looked up and noticed a figure walking towards the stage. The person was quite tall, from what I could tell at least.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know someone was in here." The person sounded masculine.
"It's alright. If you need the stage or auditorium I can leave."
"No worries. I just came to check everything out before the try-outs." I finally got to see the whole human. He was, as I already said tall. His hair was a dirty blond type of color, also a bit messy.
"So did I. If you have a routine and want to try it out, I can move a bit. I'm just stretching." See, I can be nice if I want to. I just don't usually want to.
"If you don't mind, I would like to join you." He moved closer to the stage and leaned his body on it. So now I only saw his face and his arms crossed that he had put his head on.
"Sure. I would love for someone to join me." I hope it'll feel just like old times, when I'd be warming up with my team.
I moved to the side a bit and he stood on the right side of me. "I'm Grayson, by the way." he extended his hand for me to shake.
"Nadetta. Nice to meet you." I, for the first time since I got here, gave him a real, genuine smile, while shaking his hand.
"I've never seen you around before. Are you new? Or have we just never came across each other? What grade are you in?" He copied my move. I got a bit excited since he just implied that he didn't know me, so, he won't ask stupid questions.
"I'm new. And I'm a senior. I presume you're also a senior?" He looked too grown up, to be in any other grade.
"Correct." He smiled.
We continued to warm up for the next 10 minutes. It mostly took this long, just because we were talking a lot.
"Alright. So do you have anything you want to try? Do you have a specific style you do?" I asked. I'd like to help him, if I had anything I could help him with.
"No, I haven't really started thinking of anything. I don't exactly know. I do whatever is needed." He chuckled. "Do you have a style you do?"
"Yes, I do. I prefer contemporary dancing. But I can do other styles, too. But my favorite is contemporary." Now we were just sitting on the ground criss-cross, looking at each other.
I felt comfortable talking to this stranger. He's the first person I actually had a normal conversation with, without him trying to find out all the details about me. He knows the boundaries and I like that. That's how it should be.
"Contamporary is pretty boring." He mocked me. I felt that he didn't mean it seriously, just making a joke.
"The audacity! Don't you dare come for my dance style, while you don't have one."
"That's harsh! I'm hurt!" He put his hand to his heart, making me laugh.
"You'll know better than to try anything like that again." I tried to sound as much as a stuck up little princess as I could.
"Real talk, do you have anything you want to try out? Don't mind me being here. Imagine I'm not here."
I thought for a minute. I would indeed like to try to combine some moves. "Yes. I think, I do want to try something." I took my phone and found a song on Spotify and then gave my phone to Grayson. "Could you, please, play this song once I tell you to?"
"Aye, sir." I gave him a look. "Ma'am. Aye, ma'am."
I stood up and got ready. I nodded at Grayson, as a sign, that I'm ready. Soon enough, the words "I'm trying to hold my breath. Let it stay this way, can't let this moment end... " started playing.
And I started moving. I move my hands and legs to the music. I twirl, put my leg up, fall to the ground and do some moves on the floor. Then when it's time for the first verse I stop.
" That's it for now. It's a mess, but I'll fix it." I hear clapping from the side, where Grayson was standing.
"You're great. Have you been dancing for a long time?" He tossed me a water bottle.
"I've been dancing ever since I was a toddler. It's fun, is it not?" I sit down on the floor and he sits in front of me and gave me my phone back.
"I agree. I hope to see a finished version of this dance next week."
"I hope I'll be done with it by then. If not, I'll use and old dance." I chuckled. Looking at him as he smiled back at me. I looked at my phone to check the time. "Oh shoot, I should really get going now." I stood up, he stood up right after me.
"I'll be going, too. Will I see you here tomorrow, too?"
"I can't come tomorrow. I have to leave as soon as school's over. But I'll be sure to say hi tomorrow." I once again, smiled at him.
"Good enough. See you tomorrow, then." He walked away.
