I Can’t Help but Love You

“Love can be deadly love can be cruel, and the ones you truly care about can leave you in an instant with just pain and suffering, Love can be all those things, but it can also set you free and make you the happiest person in the world. Bringing you a joyous choir of happy times that out way the bad.” This speech by Amelia Andell I thought was a half-truth that never really added up, but I lied to myself always about the first part and only kept the second half in heart.

The man I love went off to a useless war that and did not even ask me his best friend my opinion and this war was for nothing but a selfish political gain for the selfish king. Yet, my family still served him and his twisted logic for an endless number of years never seeing how useless he was to his country. John's family served him as well just as clueless as the rest. We've known each other since we were little children. Often enough, we would pull pranks on any and everyone(we were little tyrants). Twas quite funny when we pulled pranks on my elder brother especially, he would chase us around and try to tickle us. I believe I started to fall in love with John then, he’d always try to protect me from him saying corny lines like “I’ll be your knight Julianna” or “let me be your shield Julianna” he was charming as a child. When he was old enough, he went away to war without saying a word. For 4 years I waited for him to return, reading and keeping away from all who wanted to marry me. I read in my lonely tower, making poetry and waiting to see my lovely John again.

At last, that will not be true I will never get to see my lovely John but at least he will get to see my first and last words that I will write to him and that may not be enough for me but as long as he reads it I’ll be happy all the same. Even if he may not feel the same way, as long as I can get these words out I will be free knowing that I do not regret anything.

The letter is but a simple poem I wrote myself.

You’re saying something, but I can’t hear a word or noise.

You’re crying, but I don’t know why.

And I can’t move to comfort you or reach out my arm to hold your hand.

All I can do is sit there and watch you cry.

I try to tell you to stop crying, but I can’t speak.

And without even knowing I start to cry with you.

I feel my chest start to slow.

And my eyes start to close.

With all my strength and courage, I work up a smile and finally say my first and last words.

“I love you.”
