Catching Practices
•9 years later• •3rd person POV•
Everyone is in Centry Hill High School now. Diamond and Shay were in the stands watching the track team practice in their track field. The coach is currently yelling at Brandon.
“Brandon get over here on the line & run it!” said Coach Blake.
“Coach you’re gonna give me more gray hair if you keep this up,” Brandon joked.
“Well that’s impossible since your entire head already gray. You became an old man before I did.” said Coach Blake.
Brandon said, “If you say so Coach. Time me!”
1, 2, 3, Pow! 💥Brandon took off running. Brandon was the star of the track team. His times got better by the week. Recruiters from all around the world came to watch his practices and attended our track races. There was one in the stands watching right now.
Shay said, “It seems that my brother is getting better by the day. It doesn’t even phase him anymore. I don’t even think he gets tired & neither do the recruiters. Just look at him.” She side eyed the recruiter watching in the stands.
“Me either.” Diamond looked to their right and saw the recruiter. He looked to be in his 30’s to her. He was keen on watching Brandon. He even brought his own stopwatch to time Brandon from the stands. He meant business. This was her first time ever seeing someone so serious.
“The time is flying, just like my brother.” She joked.
“Oh I better get going.” Diamond stood up. She yelled, “SEE YOU LATER, BRANDON!! RUNNNN!”
Shay asked her where she was going and she explained that she also promised Damon she’d catch his practice too. They said their goodbyes and Shay thought to herself. She said to herself, “Diamond is going to break a sweat going from the track field to the football field.”
Diamond raced across campus to the football field just in time to catch Damon running a play.
Damon was the star quarterback at the age of 15. Everyone admire him & Brandon. Some were even jealous.
Diamond was happy she made it in time. Damon waved to her with a big goofy smile on his face.
Coach Nickens said, “Hey kid, eyes on the field and not on a girl who keeps rejecting you. We’re running a blitz this time.”
Damon retorted, “Dont forget that you need me. I don’t need you. And you have no room to talk to about me when those weight loss plan keep rejecting you. You should be out here running instead of me.” Everyone laughs at them and encourages them to go on.
Coach said, “Haha, very funny. Says the kid with sour patch kid hair. You look like a big blue raspberry sucker but the catch is that you don’t get sucked on.”
Everyone says, “Ooooh, bro. He got you.”
Coach said, “Thats enough of that. Let’s get back to it.” It was always like this. Damon was a star and he was coach’s pick. They exchanged words like that all the time. It’s how they show love. He walked off back to the sidelines.
“Reject,” Damon mumbled, “Let’s get this over with so I can go home! I’m hungry.”
Diamond watches for an exact hour. Practice is over now. Damon walks up to her in the stands and she instantly yawns and says, “You’re finally done. Are you sore?”
Damon thought it was cute she was worried about him more than her own tired self. “It’s nice your worried about me when you’re extremely tired. Ready to go now?” She answered yes and they left. On the way out of the stands, an idea occurred to Diamond.
“Let’s meet up with Shay & Brandon. We can all go home together since practice ends at the same time for the both of you.” She said.
Damon wanted time with Diamond to himself. He didn’t feel like sharing tonight. He already shared her over practice. He agreed anyway, “Yea you got it.” They walked to the football field just in time to catch Brandon & Shay.
Brandon said, “Well look what the diamond dragged in. What’s up, bro?”
Damon joked, “What’s up, Usain Bolt.”
That earned a laugh from Diamond and Shay. Brandon overlooked them but he didn’t think that was funny.
“Enough of that. Are y’all ready to go home now?” asked Diamond.
“I’m actually going to Bianca’s house. I’ll see the throuple later.” Shay said while giggling and running off. She waved goodbye to us. Brandon said he’d kill her for that one day. Diamond was hungry so she suggested they go to Marie’s Diner. Of course, they agreed. They were hungry, too, and they never told her no.
•A Talk at the Table• (Chapter 4)
They went and sat in the second booth by the corner. Diamond said hello to her favorite seat, “Hi. Boothe.” The other two laughed. They still couldn’t believe she named the seat they sat their rear ends on. It was so childish to them. They ordered their food all while talking and catching up. They just came back from a break so they were filling each other in. Damon and Chelsea became friends (he told them the crazy hospital story) and there were rumors they’d be dating. He also took a chance on the family business, just like Diamond asked him to, and he said he enjoyed it. Brandon is tutoring now and teaching kids to play soccer. He said he hated the recruiters but now it was Diamond’s turn to speak. The waiter brought their food. She said something about a person named Parker that caught their attention. She joked with them that it was her boyfriend. They instantly choked on their food. She explained it was a joke and they didn’t think it was funny. She also explained that Parker was a girl. They were so relieved. Diamond couldn’t stop laughing at the looks that were on their faces. She said she’d let them meet Parker in the future. Brandon said Riley would kill Diamond about Parker but Diamond said Riley didn’t know about Parker and she planned on keeping it that way. They ate some more and talked until 9:30. They each paid for their own meals and headed out, but not forgetting I’m to say good night to Jo & Marie. They all walked home together.
