Wedding Day

The palace was bustling with joy. Numerous servants were running up and down the stairs trying to arrange every decoration to perfection. The family alliance that had been looked up for a year was finally going to take place.

Katherine was not worried, or surprised to say the least. Her father had made the most of her beauty. He had always paraded her around as a virgin, a pure maiden. The reality was far different from what he had proclaimed, and she had to bite her tongue down to hold onto the piece of reality. She had been distressed before, but then she met her fiancé and she felt at peace the moment she realized he had already fallen for her. At least she would not have to win favors.

"If it is alright, I would like to see the prince."

"My apologizes your highness, but the prince is currently occupied at this moment. And it is also considered inauspicious to meet the groom before the wedding."

The maids would not let her leave. The entire palace was noisy and even though she found the prince tolerable enough and had come to love him, she found it harder to accept their marriage. After all, it was all an alliance, and she was now going to be tied down to motherhood.

Her hand unconsciously reached her belly. She wished to have been imagining things but the nausea and loss of appetite were not something that could not be termed as homesickness. It had only been three weeks, and from what she had heard, the symptoms were not felt until two months. The recent hot flushes were bothering her all well and the corset tightened around her waist and chest was making it hard to breathe, and she felt as if the world around her was making her dizzy.

But she had to tolerate it. She valued her life and also the one growing inside her. Even after all those precautions, how come she is with a child. She, in heart kept praying to God for a miracle because she had no knowledge of how she would persuade the entire court into believing that the child was Charles.

If the worst were to happen, she would have to kill the child herself.

"The ceremony is about the beginning."

Her lady-in-waiting, Mariam takes a step closer and covers her face with the veil. The woman in the mirror was different from the woman everyone that perceived.

The wedding carols rang loud and clear. The entire church was filled with noblemen and women. The king with his young queen sat in front, accompanied by Katherine's mother and her brothers. Her father had his arm interlocked with her as he walked her down the aisle to her destiny.

But fate had other plans. They were different from what her father had planned or from what Charles had dreamed of because before Katherine could be Winona's princess, she had become the mother of an unknown man's child. And that man was there in the church.
