1st Memoir – Chapter 4 Sudden Realization

“There is a boy in her room and you’re asking me why I am worried!? You don’t even really know him, yet you allow just the two of them alone there?” I looked at Alex’s mom’s and then my mom’s faces as I await their response.

They looked at each other as if feigning innocence, and why does it seem like they are controlling their laughter. Do they find my worrying amusing? Then at last my mom responded, “You youngsters do that all the time, for you the living room has no purpose! Besides he looks like a nice decent boy, what’s wrong with you?” I probably had an incredulous look on my face because I can’t believe they suddenly decided to be cool about this kind of stuff. Alex’s mom chimed in, “Don’t worry I trust Alex and that boy looks trustworthy too, why do you have that look on your face? You also lock-up yourselves in that room, just the two of you and we never worry? Just go in and “disturb” them if you want...”

“I can’t, Alex and I are kind of fighting...” The oohhs and aahhs that followed sounded playful, this time they did not even bother to hide their giggles! “Mom! What are you laughing about?” I am starting to feel embarrassed that they are laughing at my woes. “Son let me enlighten you. You are slightly worried because you are mostly jealous.” My eyes widened, but somehow,  I cannot refute her words, as if this is an absolute truth that rendered me mute. “I… I am? But why?” I can’t believe I am asking my mom, but the need to understand why outweighs my shame. “Do I like her?” I clamp my mouth not long after uttering these words, I forgot her mom is here. I should be musing in silence.

“If the confusion is killing you, go and find out! Go and bring these snacks upstairs.” Alex’s mom urged me to go. Now I stand in front of Alex’s door, I hear a bit of their conversation about styling someone’s hair? What is that about? I shouldn’t secretly listen, I knocked and spoke, “I was sent here to bring snacks!”

“What are you knocking for? Just come in.” I hear Alex say. I entered her room and see her sitting in front of the vanity and Mark braiding her hair. Still I ask, “What are you doing?” I hope my tone did not give away my irritation that what I really want is to question Mark directly as to why he is freely stroking her hair. Alex turned her head and smiled, “Mark is styling my hair, he is almost done.”

“And we are done!” Mark announced. “I told you I am an expert at this, I had a lot of practice with my granny, her hair is very long. Oh! You look so beautiful; this style suits you…” Mark was touching the tendrils that fell on her face.  Alex looked up and playfully smiled at him showing all her teeth, “Hihi! Thanks!” And she pinched his cheek.

I spoke in a grave tone, “Do you want the snacks or not?” They were probably reminded I was here. Alex turned to me, “Of course we want it!” As she was walking towards me to take the tray, I suddenly felt a wave of possessiveness and so I pulled her towards me and shoved the tray at Mark. I held her close and glared at Mark. Alex put both her hands on my chest and pushed me a bit to look up to me, confusion shown on her face. The left hand that lay on my side moved and pulled her even closer by the waist. “Hey!” She starts to protest but I just keep on glaring at Mark. Mark raised both his hand as if in mock surrender and smiled, “Hey I know when I am not wanted, I’ll just take this Snickers with me and go.” My eyes did not leave him until he went out and closed the door shut.

“Enzo?” Her voice sounded so soft near my ear. I held her shoulders and looked at her face, she is indeed very pretty, why did Mark have to say it first? Her lips looked so soft as she pouted a bit. Her eyes tenderly stared back at me and I thought, “Fuck it!” and kissed her. I will just grovel for forgiveness later and continued to kiss her deeper.
