The Spirit King’s throne room loomed like a cathedral, shadows curling around its vast pillars. Koji’s legs trembled as the King’s words echoed in his mind: “Your game has begun.”
Koji swallowed hard. “If I really am this… bridge you speak of, then what do you want from me?”
The King’s massive hands gripped the arms of his throne, stone cracking beneath his fingers. “The balance of the realms is threatened. Only one who bears the Eyes of Passage may attempt the trials. You will face four puzzles — riddles left by the ancients. Solve them, and you may unite the realms. Fail…” His voice dropped to a growl. “…and the gift of your eyes will be stripped away. Forever.”
Koji’s chest tightened, but he forced himself to meet the King’s gaze. “Then I’ll try. I don’t want this… but if it’s my fate, I’ll accept it.”
For a long, tense moment, silence filled the throne room. Then, a booming laugh shook the walls.
“Hah! Bold words from a mortal child!” The King leaned back, stroking his long beard. “Very well. You will not walk this path alone.”
From the shadows stepped a figure clad in silver armor, his hair pale as moonlight, his eyes glowing faintly blue. Unlike the towering guards, this spirit looked closer to Koji’s age, though his presence carried a weight far older. He knelt on one knee before the King.
“Your Majesty,” the spirit said, his voice calm and clear, “I will accompany him. If the boy is to face the puzzles, he will need one who knows the ways of our realm.”
The King nodded. “Rise, Kael. From this day forward, you are his guide.”
Kael turned to Koji, offering a faint smile. “I am Kael, knight of the Spirit Kingdom. I swear by my oath — your path is my path, until fate itself decides otherwise.”
Koji blinked, stunned. “You… you’re willing to help me? Even though I’m just some human?”
Kael chuckled softly. “Perhaps. Or perhaps I am simply curious whether you will stand… or fall. Either way, I’ll be at your side.”
Koji didn’t know whether to feel relieved or terrified. But for the first time since this nightmare began, he felt a spark of hope.
The King raised his hand, and suddenly the floor before them glowed with ancient runes. The air grew heavy with power.
“The first puzzle awaits in the Cavern of Echoes,” the King declared. “There, you will face a riddle carved into stone by the ancients themselves. Beware — the cavern tests not only wit, but the heart’s resolve.”
Koji clenched his fists, his glowing eye flickering with blue light. Kael placed a hand on his shoulder, steady and reassuring.
“Don’t falter, Koji,” Kael said quietly. “Every step you take is one closer to your destiny.”
Koji took a deep breath. “Then let’s go. If this is my fate, I’ll face it head-on.”
And with that, boy and spirit walked side by side, leaving the throne room — unaware of the dangers and bonds that awaited them in the darkness of the first trial.
