The cavern hummed with ancient power. The runes on the stone tablet pulsed like a heartbeat, each word glowing brighter with every second. Koji’s glowing eye flared in response, colors shifting wildly as if urging him to act.
“The first puzzle: To lead is to follow, to win is to yield. What is the key to unity?”
Koji stepped closer, heart pounding. “What does that even mean?” he muttered.
Kael’s calm voice echoed in the silence. “The ancients spoke in paradoxes. They believed the truth of the realms was hidden in contradictions. Unity cannot be forced by power alone.”
Koji ruffled his short hair in frustration. “Lead, follow… win, yield… It sounds like nonsense.”
“Think deeper,” Kael urged. “What binds people together? What allows enemies to become allies?”
Koji frowned, staring at the words. His memories surfaced — of the bullies who laughed at him for his strange eye, of the loneliness that pushed him into books, of the small kindnesses he longed for but rarely received. Unity… what was it I always wanted from others? What kept me hoping?
Then it struck him.
“…It’s trust,” Koji whispered. “To lead, you have to trust others to follow. To win, sometimes you trust enough to yield. The key to unity… is trust.”
The runes blazed brilliantly, the cavern shaking as the stone tablet dissolved into light. The glowing letters swirled and fused into a shining crystal that hovered before Koji.
Kael’s expression softened, a flicker of approval in his eyes. “You see, Koji? The Eyes chose well. Trust is not weakness — it is strength.”
Koji reached out. The crystal dissolved into his palm, sending warmth through his body. His glowing eye flashed gold for a moment, then dimmed.
A booming voice filled the cavern: “The first puzzle is solved. Three remain.”
The cavern walls rumbled, and an exit revealed itself — a staircase of light leading upward.
But as they began to ascend, the cavern’s whispers grew darker. Shapes writhed in the shadows, half-formed figures with jagged claws and hollow eyes. Koji’s breath hitched. “What are those?”
Kael drew his blade, silver light rippling across it. “Echo phantoms. Shadows born of doubt. The Cavern always demands a final toll.”
The phantoms lunged. Koji stumbled back, but Kael moved with lightning grace, cutting down the nearest one. Still, more surged forward, their claws reaching for Koji. His glowing eye pulsed wildly, warning him.
“Stay behind me!” Kael shouted.
“No!” Koji clenched his fists. “If this is my trial, I can’t just hide!”
He focused on the crystal’s warmth still in his hand. Light erupted from his glowing eye, blasting outward in a wave. The phantoms shrieked, their forms scattering like smoke in the wind.
When the cavern fell silent again, Koji stood panting, sweat dripping down his face. “I… I did it?”
Kael sheathed his sword, nodding with quiet pride. “You are stronger than you believe. Remember that.”
Together, they climbed the staircase of light, leaving the echoes behind. Above them, a new horizon waited — and the next trial loomed closer.
